The soft chime of morning bells echoed across Arendelle as sunlight filtered through the windows of the castle, casting golden streaks across the marble floors.
Ethan stood in the castle garden, his hand resting on the hilt of a wooden training sword Kai had carved for him to use in the mornings. It wasn't enchanted or blessed like the gear he'd had in Orario, but it was balanced, sturdy—and it reminded him of the basics.
His breathing was steady. The air was crisp, the scent of pine and frost still lingering in the breeze.
It had been days since the tremors in the dungeon. Days since that strange being tore open a portal and dragged him into this world. And though he had adjusted to the cold, the culture, and even the presence of royalty, he still couldn't shake the weight of uncertainty. Was it an accident that I came here? Or is something… guiding this?As he paused his drills, the sound of soft footsteps reached him.
Turning, he saw Princess Anna approaching, dressed in a fur-lined blue cloak over a simple but elegant gown. Her auburn hair was braided to the side, her cheeks lightly flushed from the cold, and her green eyes sparkled under the morning light.
She smiled. "You're up early again."
Ethan gave a small chuckle. "Old habits. Or maybe I'm just trying to look cool for the princess."
Anna rolled her eyes, though a faint blush crept up her neck. "Well, it's working. A little."
She walked over and watched as he resumed a few slow swings with the training blade. "You know… most guys just sleep in and let the guards do all the protecting."
Ethan looked at her with a wry smile. "I've never been good at doing nothing."
"I've noticed." Anna stepped beside him. "That day you saved me in the mountains… I was scared. I didn't know if we'd make it. And yet, there you were—calm, focused."
"I was scared too," he admitted quietly. "I just didn't have time to show it."
Anna tilted her head. "You've been through a lot, haven't you?"
Ethan gave her a look, as if wondering how much to say. Then he exhaled and nodded.
"Yeah. More than I ever thought I would. And yet…" He looked around the quiet garden. "This place has been the calmest I've felt in a long time."
Anna's expression softened.
"You've become important to us, Ethan," she said. "To me."
That caught him slightly off guard.
Anna was smiling—but there was sincerity in her voice now, a different tone than the usual teasing warmth. Her hand touched his gently, fingers curling around his.
He didn't pull away.
"I know we come from different worlds," she continued. "But… when I'm with you, I feel like I can be the real me. Not just 'Princess Anna.' Just… Anna."
Ethan looked down at their joined hands. "And I like that Anna. A lot."
The air between them shifted. For a long second, neither of them spoke.
Then Anna rose slightly on her toes and kissed him—softly, lingeringly. A little more certain than the last time.
Ethan responded, not urgently, but with that same quiet emotion. When they finally pulled apart, Anna giggled nervously and buried her face in his chest.
"You really need to stop being so amazing. It's unfair," she muttered.
"I'll try," he said with a smile, resting his chin lightly on her hair.
Later that afternoon, Elsa watched from a second-floor balcony.
She had seen them in the garden—not enough to intrude, but enough to understand.
Her hands gripped the stone railing gently. The look in her eyes wasn't jealousy… but something else.Longing.She wasn't sure when it had begun, but ever since Ethan arrived, things had changed. Not just in the castle. In her.
She noticed the way he carried himself—strong, but quiet. How he treated both her and Anna with equal respect, never once looking down on them for their roles or their powers. How he never tried to impress or flatter—he simply… was.
And how Anna had looked at him today…
Elsa smiled faintly to herself, closing her eyes against the breeze.
"I'm happy for her," she whispered.
Yet deep down, a part of her wondered what it might feel like to be seen like that. Not as a queen. Not as a sorceress. But as just a woman. You're strong too, Elsa, she told herself. You've come far.But even strength could grow lonely.
And in Ethan's presence… it didn't feel so cold anymore.
That evening, the castle was peaceful. Fires danced in the hearths, and laughter echoed softly through the halls.
Ethan sat on the couch in one of the reading rooms, a warm drink in hand. Anna leaned beside him, dozing slightly with her head on his shoulder. Her red hair fell in loose waves, and her breath rose and fell in steady rhythm.
Across the room, Elsa stood near the window, watching the stars begin to bloom across the sky.
"Do you miss your place" she asked suddenly.
Ethan looked over, surprised by the question.
He was quiet for a moment.
"…Yes," he admitted. "But I don't regret being here."
Elsa nodded. "You've helped us more than you know."
"I didn't do it to be a hero," Ethan said. "I just did what I thought was right."
Elsa turned and looked at him. Her gaze was calm, appreciative.
"You're different from the others I've known."
He gave her a curious look.
She hesitated, then said, "You don't look at me like I'm… dangerous."
Ethan met her eyes. "Because you're not."
Their eyes lingered for a few seconds longer.
Then Anna stirred and muttered something in her sleep, nuzzling against Ethan's side. He smiled softly and gently pulled the blanket around her shoulders.
Elsa turned back toward the window, the corners of her lips lifting ever so slightly.
And somewhere deep in the mountains… the hum echoed again.
Waiting.
