Chapter 260: Two guards
"Uncle Zen, Let's go fast! We are a few days late from the others."
Zen who was silent since the abrupt outburst in the recovery room seemed to get his vigor back finally.
"You brat, since when do you have the will for competition? You are getting suspicious every time you open your dirty mouth."
Lucas just chuckled and kept walking briskly. He knew the map of the town clearly and it was so familiar that he thought it to be his hometown.
The church was a few kilometers away from the hospital and Lucas was going to walk there while marveling at the small carts that the horses were moving from here and there.
Some carriages were so lavish yet some were made with the worst-looking random woods.
'I have to learn to make everything this Town has in 5 years…' Lucas's heart was beating very fast. The more he looked at all this, the greater he felt that he had the ability to get this all to his territory too.
"By the way, Uncle Zen. What was she talking about? Chaos energy something." Lucas finally broke the ice which made the guy surprised.
Lucas knew why that was, the previous Lucas was very reserved and would not talk even after someone would ask him something.
"It's nothing, if you really have it then the church will take care of it." Zen expression was calm so Lucas didn't know whether he was sad or happy.
"You mean take care as in kill me or take care as in I have something rare?"
"Brat, you won't die today. It might even be to your advantage. Just shut up and walk for now." Zen said and Lucas could feel the proudness in his voice.
Lucas finally sighed in relief, it seemed he wouldn't have to kill anyone, till now, there had been no opportunity where Lucas had to kill a human.
They could have taken a carriage but Lucas was adamant on saving Zen's money. He didn't have any of his own right now, it seemed previously Lucas was a big spender.
After walking for some time, Lucas and Zen finally reached in front of a majestically large white building that in no way looked smaller than a typical castle.
"Woah…"
"It's supposed to be good, or you won't be living so normally right now," Zen said and started walking forward.
Lucas acknowledged what he said, if the church was to be poor, he would not be living in any house right now.
He would have either been sent to the streets or to the front lines as a scapegoat.
The entrance gate of the church was very big and it was closed with two people standing in front of it.
The two people there were the church's guards, their armor was pristine and had a shining hue under the sunlight, the armor was silver in color. On their heads were helmets that had wings at the sides. Typical religious behavior.
At one glance, Lucas couldn't help but want these armors too. His eyes were filled with greed but there was still pride in them. He only gave these guards a small smile that was not reciprocated, he could tell.
"Did you bring another one? Batch master Zen." One of the guards said with a calm expression. There were holes in the helmet from where the eyes see and Lucas could feel the sharpness coming from them.
He tried to check the status but to his dismay, it was not possible.
"What else do you think I am here for, boy? Open the gate quickly."
The authority in Zen's voice did not reciprocate with how he looked. He was a very unmaintained man with dry clothing and a beard with a bald head. Lucas would have believed if he was a beggar here.
"Just fulfilling the protocols, welcome."
The other guard went back and touched the gate lightly. Just when his hand touched, complex runes formed on the gate that was at first white but then became blue the next second.
That was how the gate opened making Lucas's heart race more than usual.
He started going in but before he could do so, the guards put a spear in front of him.
"First Match master Zen, then you." The guard said with cold eyes.
Inside Lucas, excitement bubbled but he tried to repress it. No matter how much he wanted to fight these strong people, he didn't have his armor, the swords, or anything with him.
The only weapon he had was the mark of the damned who asks for the price of his sanity in exchange for the power it gives.
Zen ignored the altercation and went inside the church first. Lucas made eye contact with one of the guards for a few seconds and went inside too.
Just when they left, the guards finally looked at his companion.
"Did you also feel it?" Discover stories at My Virtual Library Empire
"The bloodlust or the noble pride?" The other one said in a hoarse voice.
"Both, the young man was not normal, we should report it to the superior."
"His eyes were not like the others from his batch. He is experienced, I am sure about that." The guard with the hoarse voice started moving to the side and after clicking on his chest plate once, he vanished completely.
——
Lucas marveled at the construction of the whole church and couldn't help but have his mouth agape.
Zen looked at him from the side, his emotions unknown yet one thing was clear, he was suspicious of something.
"Are you okay?" Lucas asked the guy. He knew the guy was looking at him for a long time now.
"… Are you really Lucas?"
"Haha… what are you on about, Uncle Zen? It's me, Lucas." Lucas said with a genuine smile yet deep down, he had this feeling.
Do people feel that he had changed and what if they were to find out about it? Will the quest fail?
"Your tone has changed completely." Zen said again and Lucas felt like it was time to bring in the big guns of the previous 'Lucas Garde'.
"Ugh, I was fucking trying something, just get off my case alright?? FUCK!" Lucas said with pretend annoyance.
Zen became surprised yet that surprise changed to a smile soon.
'What the fuck? So I just have to be rude and it's suddenly okay?'
