Legendary FBI Detective

Chapter 457: The Real Truth of the Case—Part 3

FBI, Las Vegas Branch, an interrogation room.

The sound of knocking arose, Luo An shifted his gaze from Hector Jamie and walked out of the interrogation room. In the hallway stood Michelle and two unfamiliar suited men and women.

"Hello, Group Leader Greenwood."

The white female in a suit with a ponytail at the forefront extended her hand to Luo An with a smile, introducing herself:

"My name is Fiona, from the Legal Consulting Office."

"Hello."

He extended his hand with a smile and shook hers, then Luo An, together with Michelle, took Fiona and her colleague to the office area, exchanged brief pleasantries, and then Luo An presented the legal details of the case to the two of them.

After examining the materials carefully, Fiona's eyes narrowed slightly as she started a low conversation with her male colleague, then she stood up, walked over to Luo An, and said with a smile:

"Group Leader Greenwood, may I have a word with you in private?"

"Of course."

Luo An led Fiona into an adjacent conference room, closed the door, and casually poured two cups of coffee for themselves, then asked:

"What do you think about this case?"

"To be honest, if we go to court right now, the Special Investigation Team will be at a disadvantage."

Fiona took the coffee with a word of thanks, then furrowed her brow, saying:

"Right now, the Special Investigation Team doesn't have any direct evidence proving that Hector Jamie is the mastermind behind this case."

Luo An took a sip of his coffee without any change in expression, and said calmly:

"That's why I asked my people to find you."

If the Special Investigation Team currently had direct evidence, there would be no need to seek out the Legal Consulting Office for this case.

"Group Leader Greenwood makes a very sound point."

Fiona paused upon hearing this, then chuckled lightly and thought for a while. She expressed that she and her colleague had come up with three strategies.

The first was to do nothing, to go to court with the evidence at hand, and try to convince the judge that Hector Jamie was the mastermind, the least likely plan to succeed.

The second strategy was to shatter Hector Jamie's current identity as an "accomplice," using available evidence in court to convince the judge to deem Hector Jamie as a "co-conspirator."

Federal law has a strong principle of "adherence to precedent," and considering Hector Jamie's past prison time, Fiona was confident in using the argument "a bad person will only do bad things" to suggest that Hector Jamie certainly had reasons to take advantage of Ao Na's love for him and simply watch her commit the poisoning, thereby convincing the judge and the jury.

Luo An remained expressionless and did not speak. This plan implied that Fiona was giving up on revealing Hector Jamie as the true mastermind behind the case.

After a few seconds of silence, Luo An asked:

"What's the third strategy?"

Ao Na chuckled, put down her coffee cup, and said:

"Respect federal law, respect Hector Jamie's agenda, but also respect the rights of the 26 victims' families."

Luo An's eyes narrowed slightly upon hearing this; he understood the implication in Fiona's words.

According to federal law, the Special Investigation Team could not reveal all the case details to these family members, but these 26 victims' family members had the right to know who killed their loved ones.

Among these relatives, there were many wealthy individuals, and these wealthy people always have ways to find out the truth about the case from other sources.

What wealthy people, upon learning the truth, would do to Hector Jamie locked up in prison was no longer something the Special Investigation Team could control.

One can only say that in this capitalist country, having money truly allows one to do whatever they want.

Having thought this through, Luo An looked at Fiona in front of him, his brows slightly furrowing.

Watching Luo An silently, a glint flashed in Fiona's eyes; she coughed lightly and said:

"Group Leader Greenwood, I think..."

Before Fiona could finish her sentence, Luo An extended his hand to interrupt her, then pulled open the conference room door with a smile, saying:

"Thank you for your help, Ms. Fiona. I will consider your suggestions."

"…Okay."

Fiona was slightly startled, then smiled and left the conference room. Luo An exchanged a few more pleasantries with them, then gestured for Michelle to see the two out.

Just as Michelle and her companions stepped out of the area, Luo An walked over to Reesi not far away, his voice low and expressionless:

"Reesi, check on this Fiona and her colleague."

"Hm?"

Reesi looked puzzled upon hearing this, and when she lifted her head and saw Luo An's expressionless face, her expression changed in an instant as she nodded vigorously in agreement.

"No problem, I'm on it."

Watching Reesi's hurriedly retreating back, Luo An crossed his arms in front of him, his eyes narrowing slightly.

Luo An didn't consider himself a good person; since arriving in this world, he had already taken many lives.

But the third suggestion Fiona proposed was of another nature, and one that could lead to a pitfall he might never climb out of.

Inevitably, this made Luo An wonder whether Fiona was merely offering a suggestion, harboring other intentions, or if there was someone behind her.

"Hey! Luo An!"

Just as Luo An was deep in thought, Mona suddenly ran out of that room excitedly holding a laptop:

"You're amazing! How did you know..."

"Stop!"

Seeing this, Luo An quickly extended a hand to cover Mona's mouth.

He glanced at the laptop screen for a few moments, then smiled, holding the laptop as he turned and went back to the interrogation room.

Entering the interrogation room again, Luo An cut straight to the point:

"Hector Jamie, you admit you had a relationship with Ao Na, correct?"

Hector Jamie looked at Luo An for a moment, then nodded:

"Yes."

Luo An immediately followed up:

"Did this relationship occur in the house Ao Na rented?"

"I..."

"Don't you dare lie, dear Mr. Hector."

Hector was just beginning to speak when Luo An interrupted him, staring intently and saying:

"You've lied before. If you lie again, the judge and the jury in court will probably have a much worse impression of you."

Hearing this, Hector fell silent for a while, then slowly nodded:

"Yes, we did have relations in the house Ao Na rented."

"Very good."

Luo An smiled satisfactorily and then placed the laptop in front of Hector Jamie, saying:

"My agents have just discovered that the ethyl ether and alprazolam found in that room were ordered from a crime website.

This crime website is the same one used to contact the trio led by Petro, and the purchase order transmission signal address indicated that the buyer was located in the room Ao Na rented.

What's your view on this?"

"I'm sorry, Group Leader Greenwood, as I've said before, Ao Na was always in charge of purchasing drugs, and I never asked."

Hector Jamie maintained his composure, smiling faintly as he explained:

"As for the site from which Ao Na purchased the drugs being the same one I used to contact Petro's trio, it's because I didn't hide it from Ao Na.

Ao Na saw this website, registered an account herself, and made drug orders behind my back—it's quite normal, isn't it?"

"Indeed, quite normal."

Luo An smiled slightly:

"The room was thoroughly cleaned, we can't find Ao Na's computer, and perhaps you smashed it and sank it in a lake or burned it, so there's no way to prove what you are saying."

"Wow, Group Leader Greenwood."

Hector Jamie's face was alight with a broader smile, but he shook his head repeatedly:

"Making baseless accusations without evidence, I could sue you for slander in court."

"Feel free to sue."

Luo An leaned forward slowly, looking down at Hector, and said:

"I just want to tell you something: that crime website has actually been under NSA surveillance all along."

"..."

As his words fell, the smile on Hector's face suddenly became incredibly stiff, while Luo An's smile became warmer and more benevolent.
