Chapter 195: Sudden Fire
Upon hearing Augustus's shout, Luo An, whose butt had hardly warmed the chair, slowly got up and left his seat.
Because Augustus didn't come out to the front of the office area yelling with a folder in hand, Luo An wasn't in the slightest bit panicked, suggesting that no new case had arrived.
Sure enough, upon entering the team leader's office, Augustus handed him several thick folders.
They weren't any notices or orders, just files and reports from several cases that had been completed earlier.
Augustus thought since Luo An was idle, he might as well have him look at the reports to check for any errors.
If there were any, he could point them out, and later someone would correct them.
——
Skiving off at work was always a pleasure, but it was just too little and passed too quickly.
Luo An felt that he had only spun around in his chair a few times when the date on the calendar nearby changed from Wednesday to the last working day of the week.
Friday, afternoon.
As he watched the sun once again race from east to west signaling the end of today's workday, Luo An sat in his chair, silently checking the system page in front of him.
The light blue system inventory currently showed [Stamina Potion × 2][Strength Potion × 2][Antidote Potion × 2][Bleeding-Stop Potion × 4][Featherfall Potion × 1][Weakness Potion × 1][Aqualung Potion × 1][Fireproof Potion × 1][Painkiller Potion × 1]
Not only that, but because Luo An hadn't done anything during the day on Thursday, the system rated him as [Pass], and then the treasure chest gave him one 50 US Dollar bill and one 100 US Dollar bill.
Looking at the Franklins in his hand, Luo An's face broke into a smile.
It seemed his previous guess was right; the system treasure chest would dish out a few US Dollar bills every half a month.
Just as Luo An was sitting in his chair, immersed in his own little world, Reesi, who had just finished her work, suddenly came over.
Taking the coffee Reesi passed him, Luo An asked with a puzzled face:
"What's up?"
"There's something I need your help with."
Touching her coffee cup to Luo An's, Reesi said with eyes gleaming, in a low voice:
"How about going to a bar in Manhattan District with me after work?"
Reesi had recently met two pretty girls from a New York university in that bar, but she hadn't managed to win them over yet.
Luo An's interest was piqued immediately:
"So, you want me to be your wingman?"
"No."
Reesi shook her head, she had already figured out the orientations of the two girls; one didn't mind playing games with the same sex, while the other was strongly against it.
"That one named Vivian, who only likes handsome guys, I'll leave to you. I believe your face can definitely conquer her."
Reesi moved closer to Luo An, rubbing her hands like a housefly, she whispered:
"The other one, I'll take care of. One for each of us, OK?"
"Uh..."
Luo An raised his eyebrow; Reesi was an old hand at flirting, and it was rare for her to be so smitten with a girl.
So, was it because the girl had an irresistible body or a beautiful face?
"Come on, what do you say?"
Luo An kept silent, and Reesi sat there scratching her ears and cheeks in frustration, obviously anxious.
I want to see a picture first.
Recalling what Reesi did last time that lacked martial virtue, Luo An decided to have her show the girl's picture first, so he could decide whether to agree or not.
Before he could voice his thoughts, Augustus suddenly pushed open the office area's door.
Seeing the folder in Augustus's hands and the grim expression on his dark face, both Luo An and Reesi felt a sudden lurch in their hearts.
"Everyone! A new case!"
Hearing Augustus's announcement, and seeing that there were only ten minutes left until the end of the work day according to the clock at the front of the office area, Luo An's face was speechless as he raised his hand to cover his forehead.
The eager expression on Reesi's face instantly collapsed.
"Just twenty minutes ago, a big fire broke out in the Brooklyn District government building!"
Not having a chance to take in everyone's various expressions, Augustus announced gravely:
"The blaze was urgently extinguished by the FDNY (New York Fire Department), but it still burned a politician to death, along with several students from Alfred University in New York!"
Upon learning that so many people had died in the fire, the faces of all the agents in Unit 5 instantly turned grave.
Augustus continued as he handed over the folder to William:
"Because one of the victims is a politician, the NYPD gave us an urgent call. They need the FBI's help."
Agent Luo An stood up:
"I'll head to the scene with Reesi right now."
"Good."
Augustus nodded:
"Be careful and stay in touch... oh, and by the way, this is considered overtime for today."
Hearing Augustus's last remark, Luo An cracked a slight smile, knowing that they would get overtime pay for this.
Dragging along Reesi, who hadn't quite reacted yet, they went into the equipment room, and moments later, the two left the Unit 5 investigation team.
The SUV with the damaged front hadn't been repaired yet, so this time Luo An drove another SUV belonging to Unit 5.
In the passenger seat, Reesi, noticing the SUV flying swiftly through the traffic on the road beneath her, fastened her seatbelt tightly while swallowing and said:
"Luo An, could you slow down a bit? This is the only car left for our Unit 5!"
If this car also got wrecked, they would probably have to borrow a car from another unit for the next investigation.
"Trust my driving skills, Reesi."
Luo An smiled faintly and silently floored the gas pedal.
Reesi let out a light huff and then suddenly thought of something, taking out her phone and began tapping away.
Turning the steering wheel to overtake a sedan, Luo An glanced over and said with a light smile:
"Are you messaging those two girls? Planning to meet some other time?"
"No."
A flicker of worry crossed Reesi's eyes as she shook her head and said:
"Remember I mentioned earlier that those two girls are college students?
They attend Alfred University."
"What?"
Luo An was somewhat surprised, and then quickly asked:
"Were they in the government building?"
"No."
Seeing the new text message on her phone, Reesi breathed a sigh of relief, turned her head to smile and said:
"They were both busy working part-time at a bar to earn money, so they were lucky not to have encountered the fire."
"God always favors the diligent."
Luo An casually uttered a cliche which he didn't know where he had heard from and then pressed down on the gas pedal to overtake another sedan.
Soon, the two arrived at the government building in the Brooklyn District.
At this moment, the square in front of the government building was crowded with people—not only the relatives of the victims, curious bystanders, a bunch of reporters broadcasting the news live, but also the NYPD maintaining order at the scene.
Stepping out of the SUV, Luo An and Reesi briskly walked past the cordon, casting a glance at the scorched government building not far away:
"Hello, officer, I'm FBI Agent Luo An."
"Just call me Bailey."
Seeing the golden badge in Luo An's hand, a NYPD detective immediately came forward, and after shaking hands, Detective Bailey went straight to the point:
"There is a politician and four university students dead at the scene, and more than forty people have been injured from smoke inhalation; the injured have already been sent to the hospital for treatment."
Following Detective Bailey quickly into the government building, Luo An looked around and asked:
"Are there any witnesses from the time of the fire?"
"I don't know, we're still looking."
The three of them walked briskly into the interior of the building; Bailey led Luo An and Reesi to the doorway of a charred room, pointed inside with a hand and wore an exceptionally grim expression on his face.
