Kung Fu Panda: Reborn as Po

Chapter 68: Betrayal by the Lizards

The air inside the cavern was thick and humid, carrying the faint crackle of magical energy from the massive, crystalline formations surrounding them. Glowing mana crystals jutted from the walls and floor, casting an eerie, bluish glow that lit the entire lair in an otherworldly shimmer. Their value was immeasurable—each shard worth a fortune back in the real world.

Po's sharp gaze swept over the cavern, his instincts flaring. He wasn't just suspicious—he was certain. The betrayal was coming. He exchanged a glance with Jin-woo, and the unspoken understanding passed between them effortlessly.

Jin-woo's voice was low but firm. "They're going to make their move."

Po nodded, a smirk tugging at the corner of his lips. "Yeah, I can smell it from here. But let's have some fun first."

From behind them, Hwang Dongsuk's rough voice broke the tension. "Hey, you three. Stay here and keep watch. We'll, uh... scout ahead and check the perimeter. You know, just in case something's lurking."

Po's eyes didn't even flicker toward Dongsuk. "Scout ahead, huh?" he muttered under his breath. "More like scoping out our backs."

Jin-woo sighed, folding his arms. "What a cliché. Betray us in the dungeon, take the loot, leave no witnesses. Typical."

Po chuckled. "Yeah, well, some people really like playing the 'Lizard' role."

"Lizards?" Jinho asked nervously, his voice cracking a bit.

Jin-woo glanced at him, his expression cool. "Yeah. You know how lizards escape predators by cutting off their tails? Guys like them do the same thing—betray their teammates and run off with the spoils. We call 'em Lizards."

Jinho's eyes darted between them, his nervousness mounting. "Wait... You think they're gonna—"

"They will," Po cut in smoothly, "but we'll deal with them after we handle... her."

A tremor ran through the cavern, and a deep, guttural hiss echoed off the crystal-covered walls. The mana crystals shimmered as the ground shook beneath their feet. Slowly, from a cavernous hollow, the enormous form of the dungeon's boss stirred.

The Spider Queen.

Her chitinous legs scraped against the floor, producing an awful, bone-grating sound. Eight gleaming eyes, like cold, black gemstones, locked onto them. Poison dripped from her massive fangs, sizzling on the cavern floor.

Jinho's panic hit immediately. "T-that thing—It's—!"

SMACK!

Jin-woo's palm landed on the back of Jinho's head—not hard enough to hurt, but firm enough to shock him back to reality. "Calm. Down." His voice was sharp and commanding. "Panicking gets you killed."

Po, his eyes fixed on the spider, cracked his knuckles. "Relax, Jinho. I get it. It's big, it's ugly, and it probably smells terrible." He flashed a grin. "But here's the thing. That bug's in for a world of hurt."

Without warning, Po vanished from his spot, his speed shattering the air with a sonic boom. In the blink of an eye, he was beside the nearest mana crystal formation. With a single strike from his bare fist, he shattered the base, causing the entire column to collapse into his open inventory with a soft shimmering effect.

Jin-woo, not wanting to be outdone, dashed to another cluster and unleashed a flurry of precise cuts, severing the crystals from their roots and sweeping them into his inventory.

Jinho gawked. "W-wait, you're looting now?!"

Po called over his shoulder, "Speedrun strategy, kid! Always secure the bag before the boss fight!"

The Spider Queen shrieked, her body heaving as she lunged forward, massive legs crashing down with enough force to shatter the ground. Po sidestepped effortlessly, his body blurring out of harm's way, while Jin-woo slid low, slicing at the spider's underbelly with his blade.

The monster recoiled, a screech of pain ripping from its maw as acidic blood spattered the floor.

Po's fist glowed with raw chi as he smashed another leg out from under the beast, sending cracks rippling through its armor-like exoskeleton. "She's tough!" he said, eyes glinting with excitement. "But I like a good challenge!"

Jin-woo moved fluidly, his every strike honed and calculated. "I'll open her up," he called. "You finish her!"

The Spider Queen reared back, venom sacs bulging, and unleashed a jet of acid.

Po grinned. "Bad move."

In a flash, he inhaled deeply—then, with the force of a hurricane, exhaled, releasing a compressed air blast so powerful it not only dispersed the acid spray but slammed the spider into the cavern wall with a bone-crunching impact.

Jin-woo seized the opportunity. Leaping high into the air, he brought his blade down in a precise, deadly arc—straight through the Spider Queen's skull. The monster spasmed, then went limp.

A familiar chime sounded in Jin-woo's head:

[Ding! You have defeated the Boss.]You have leveled up!You have leveled up!

Po wiped his hands together. "Teamwork, baby. Makes the dream work."

Jin-woo flicked the venom from his blade and gave Po a small smirk. "Not bad."

They didn't have time to celebrate. Footsteps echoed through the cavern—the Lizards had finally slithered back.

Dongsuk's voice was slick with false friendliness. "Well, well, looks like you guys handled the hard part. Now, how about you hand over those crystals... and we can all walk out of here happy."

Po's expression darkened, his earlier amusement evaporating. "Yeah, nah. I don't think so, Lizard."

Jin-woo, his voice cold and razor-sharp, added, "I hope you're ready to cut your tail."

The temperature in the cavern seemed to drop as tension filled the air.

And the real hunt was about to begin.
