Chapter 67: The C-Rank Dungeon Raid with Hwang Dongsuk
Po and Jin-woo stepped into the bustling marketplace, surrounded by the sights and sounds of vendors shouting, bargain hunters haggling, and the usual city clamor. Po had a smile on his face as he carried a basket of groceries—spices, fruits, and a few unfamiliar items he planned on experimenting with in the kitchen. Jin-woo, on the other hand, looked like he'd rather be anywhere else but here. He wasn't really into shopping, but he was getting used to Po's unpredictable sense of fun.
"So, we need some herbs for that soup, right?" Po asked, holding up a bunch of leafy greens. "I think I'll try something spicy today. What do you think?"
Jin-woo gave a half-hearted shrug. "As long as it's edible..."
Po let out a laugh, tossing a few more items into the basket. "Hey, don't knock it till you've tried it, my friend. You'll never know what's good until you take that first bite."
As they made their way through the market, Po spotted a young boy struggling to carry a pile of heavy bags. Without hesitation, he walked over, effortlessly hoisted the bags onto his own arms, and flashed a grin.
"Looks like you've got your hands full, kid. Need a hand?"
The boy's eyes widened in surprise. "Wow, thanks, mister! You're strong."
"Yeah, I get that a lot," Po joked, as Jin-woo rolled his eyes beside him.
Once the errands were done, Po clapped his hands together. "Alright, Jin-woo, it's time for some training. You up for it?"
"Training? We just finished our shopping," Jin-woo muttered, though he knew Po wouldn't back down.
Po grinned. "Just a little bit of light training. Come on, follow me!"
After a few rounds of sparring in the backyard of Po's temporary home, they took a break and then made their way to a nearby building site. Po had received a request for assistance from a man named Hwang Dongsuk. As they approached the site, Po's senses heightened again. Something about this felt… off. But he knew that's why he was there—this would be an interesting test for his abilities, for both Jin-woo and himself.
At the entrance, they were greeted by a burly man with a strong, rough voice who introduced himself as Hwang Dongsuk. His attire was practical, designed for physical labor, and his presence was commanding. Behind him was a team of workers, all with serious expressions.
"Thanks for showing up," Dongsuk said, shaking Po's and Jin-woo's hands. "We've got a bit of an issue with a Blue C-rank gate nearby. We need all the help we can get, and I've heard good things about you two."
Po smiled and nodded. "Glad to help. We've got experience with these sorts of things."
Dongsuk motioned for the group to follow him. As they walked toward the gate, a young man with a confident swagger approached them. He looked to be in his early twenties, with a proud glint in his eyes.
"Yoo Jinho, at your service," the man introduced himself. "I'm part of the strike squad. It's a pleasure to meet the famous Sung Jin-woo."
Jin-woo didn't say much, just giving a quick nod. He could already tell that Jinho was a bit too self-assured for his own good. Po, however, was all smiles, shaking the man's hand enthusiastically.
"I'm excited to see what you've got, Yoo. A real strike squad member, huh? Sounds impressive."
Jinho puffed his chest out. "You bet it is! We've handled tough stuff before. This Blue C-rank gate's no match for us."
Po's senses tingled as they were handed mining equipment and other tools. He could already feel the impending danger, but he didn't say anything just yet. His instincts told him that something was off, but he needed to wait and observe.
The group made their way into the Blue C-rank gate, and Po kept his awareness sharp. His eyes scanned the area, feeling a strange ripple in the air, a slight disturbance that made the hairs on the back of his neck stand up.
Jin-woo's expression hardened, and he notified the whole party of the imminent attack by the Insect-type monsters, and Po knew the other man had already sensed something as well. He smiled inwardly—Jin-woo's instincts were becoming more reliable, especially with Po's guidance. But Po didn't just rely on instincts; his time in the Solo Leveling world had sharpened his senses, allowing him the ability to see into the future in ways that were almost unnerving. He could catch glimpses of events yet to happen, but even with that power, he knew better than to trust the future entirely. It was always shifting.
Before long, Po's hunches proved to be true. A massive swarm of insect-like creatures appeared from the shadows, their grotesque forms glistening with venom. The group sprang into action, but Po wasn't going to leave anything to chance. He raised his hands, a golden aura swirling around him.
A bubble of energy surrounded them, protecting everyone inside while allowing the casters to fire off their attacks from behind the shield. Po could feel the tension mounting as the monsters came at them in waves, but he remained calm, knowing this was just the beginning.
"Focus your attacks on the large ones," Po called out to the team, his voice commanding yet calm.
The battle raged on, and Jin-woo, his senses enhanced by the System, moved with fluid precision. He cut down monsters with swift strikes, while Po continued to maintain the shield and dispatch any that got too close. The creatures were relentless, but they were no match for the combined might of the group.
After the slaughter, the air was filled with the acrid stench of death and the sounds of bodies hitting the ground. Po lowered his hands, dissipating the protective bubble. The team was panting, but they were safe—at least for now.
Jin-woo turned to Hwang Dongsuk, who had been observing the whole battle. The man looked impressed, but his brows furrowed as he approached Jin-woo.
"How did you know those creatures were coming?" Dongsuk asked, his voice skeptical.
Jin-woo didn't hesitate. "Instincts."
Dongsuk's expression darkened slightly, his eyes narrowing. "Instincts, huh? I hope for your sake that your instincts aren't leading you into trouble." He walked off, clearly not satisfied with the answer.
Po caught Jin-woo's eye, giving him a small, knowing nod. "Stay on your toes, Jin-woo. Don't let your guard down. These guys might look harmless, but you can't trust anyone who's too confident in this line of work."
Jin-woo understood, his posture stiffening slightly as he stayed close to Po. As they continued their trek, Po couldn't shake the feeling that this was only the beginning of something much bigger. He'd seen the future, but he knew better than to act on it blindly.
They kept moving forward, the weight of their mission hanging heavily in the air.
