Chapter 30: Chapter 30 the Murderous Intent of the Mysterious Jōnin!
Don't say something embarrassing like this when I've just made up my mind!
Finally, everyone in Team 7 decided to accept the mission.
The reason Morkel agreed was that he noticed Teacher Kakashi always looked relaxed. It seemed that this task was not difficult for him. Since their safety could be guaranteed, it might not be a bad idea to take this trip.
The group walked for another half a day and arrived at the seaside. After some negotiation between Uncle Dazna and a boatman, the boatman, with a hopeful look on his face, decided to take everyone to the Land of Waves.
As they got closer, Morkel noticed that the fog on the sea was getting thicker and thicker. After a while, he saw an unfinished bridge stretching across the water.
Uncle Dazna pointed at the structure and said, "The purpose of my trip is to complete this bridge so that the Land of Waves will have a passage to the outside world and escape from Cardo's clutches."
"We are saving the people of an entire country!" Naruto said, shaking Morkel's hand excitedly.
Morkel nodded, feeling reassured about his decision.
Soon, the boat reached the shores of the Land of Waves, and the team set foot on land. Uncle Dazna visibly relaxed. "Great! We have finally arrived. I beg you to take me home safely!"
Kakashi still looked as lazy as ever but warned, "Since we've arrived, any ninjas sent to attack us will likely be at least Chūnin or even Jōnin level. You three should stay on guard at all times."
"Don't worry, Mr. Kakashi! I will protect myself!" Naruto declared, patting his chest confidently.
Morkel, however, remained cautious. Ever since they arrived, he had a nagging feeling as if someone was secretly observing them.
On the way, Uncle Dazna led the group while Morkel, Sasuke, and Kakashi remained close to him. Naruto, eager to redeem himself after freezing during the previous attack, rushed ahead.
Kakashi walked up to him and knocked him on the head. "Hey, stop acting rashly. You're making everyone nervous."
Naruto rubbed his sore head but insisted, "I'm just being cautious!"
Just then, he sensed something unusual and quickly threw a kunai into the bushes.
Morkel felt it too and turned toward the direction Naruto had attacked.
Kakashi sighed and knocked Naruto on the head again. "Don't throw kunai randomly. You could hurt someone innocent."
Naruto, unwilling to back down, approached to inspect what he had hit. Morkel, Sasuke, and Dazna followed closely.
Pushing aside the bushes, they saw a small white rabbit trembling in fear, its ear pinned to the ground by Naruto's kunai.
"Luckily, it's just a little animal. If it were a person, you'd be in serious trouble," Sasuke commented.
Kakashi, however, remained deep in thought.
Morkel observed the rabbit closely. "Strange… white fur?"
"This kind of rabbit only has white fur in winter when daylight is short… or if it's kept indoors without sunlight."
Kakashi's eyes sharpened. "That means it's likely used as a substitution target."
Morkel's eyes widened in realization. Something dangerous was coming.
Kakashi quickly ordered, "Protect Mr. Dazna!"
At that moment—
Whoosh!
A massive broadsword, over two meters long, spun through the air toward Dazna's head!
Morkel reacted instantly, pulling out a kunai and throwing it at the sword.
The kunai multiplied into hundreds, clashing against the massive weapon.
Ding! Ding! Ding!
The repeated impacts diverted the sword's trajectory, and it embedded itself into a tree to the side.
A shadowy figure emerged from the dense forest and landed on the hilt of the sword.
Kakashi's eyes narrowed. "It's him…"
Standing on the massive sword was none other than the rogue ninja of Kirigakure—Momochi Zabuza!
"Kakashi-sensei, let me handle him!" Naruto declared boldly.
Before he could move, Kakashi stopped him. "Step back! This man will kill you in an instant."
"What?!" Naruto exclaimed.
Kakashi explained, "His name is Momochi Zabuza, a former member of the Seven Ninja Swordsmen of the Mist. He specializes in silent assassinations."
Morkel's eyes widened. "How many people has he killed?"
Before Kakashi could answer, Zabuza smirked. "Not many. Just about a hundred."
Morkel, Naruto, and Sasuke froze.
Morkel took a step back, his heart racing.
Compared to their easy ninja school exams, Zabuza's graduation test was a massacre!
Zabuza's cold eyes scanned Morkel and the others before settling on Kakashi. "Copy Ninja Kakashi… your name is on my list. They say you have the Sharingan and have copied over a thousand jutsu."
"If I want to complete my mission, I need to take you out first."
Kakashi didn't respond to Zabuza but turned to his team. "Protect Mr. Dazna. If you get a chance to run, don't hesitate!"
Zabuza chuckled darkly. "Don't even think about running. None of you will escape!"
With that, he leaped onto the lake beside them, his hands forming seals at high speed.
Ninjutsu: Hidden Mist Technique!
A thick mist rapidly enveloped the area, obscuring their vision.
Morkel's breath quickened. This was the first time he had felt such a suffocating presence.
"Protect Mr. Dazna!" Kakashi's voice echoed through the mist.
Then, Zabuza's chilling voice emerged. "Throat… spine… lungs… liver… carotid artery… kidneys… heart… So many vital spots. Which one should I cut first?"
He was playing with them, enjoying their fear.
Sasuke's body trembled. He could feel the murderous intent pressing down on them like an invisible weight.
This was the difference between a Jōnin and a mere Genin.
Morkel gritted his teeth. He had thought he was strong, but this was an entirely different level.
Zabuza was no ordinary enemy.
This was a true assassin.
A true monster.
