Chapter 36: Chapter 35 – This Is Why I Hate Useless Teammates
Three Minutes Ago
"We have to head to the center of the battlefield. Aizawa-sensei can't handle that many enemies on his own."
Clutching his now-useless fingers, Midoriya Izuku said this firmly to Asui Tsuyu and Mineta Minoru.
In less than five minutes, far too much had happened. First, villains invaded the USJ. Then Konata was captured by a villain with a teleportation quirk. Aizawa-sensei jumped in alone to confront them, and the students were told to escape and get help.
But no sooner had Aizawa left than the villain with the teleportation quirk, Kurogiri, reappeared at the observation deck. The timing was perfect. After that, Class A was scattered across the USJ by teleportation. Midoriya, Asui, and Mineta ended up on a boat in the Flood Zone, surrounded by dozens of villains in the water.
During the ensuing fight, Midoriya used One For All—just like during the quirk assessment—to land a powerful blow with minimal cost. Though he injured his finger, the result was worth it.
"You're crazy, Midoriya! That's where the most enemies are! Going there is suicide!"
Mineta, just freed from danger, immediately objected.
"We don't even know what's happening on the observation deck. Maybe no one got out to call for help. Our best option is to find a place to hide!"
"Aizawa-sensei is in danger. And so is Konata…"
Midoriya gritted his teeth and looked toward the plaza, dipping his broken fingers in the water to ease the pain.
If she could still transform with that quirk, he might not worry as much. Transformed Konata was strong—even All Might had praised her. But just that afternoon, she'd said she couldn't use that form for at least three more days. That meant her combat strength was halved.
"Midoriya, what the hell are you thinking?"
Mineta's face contorted with fear.
"Aizawa-sensei is a pro hero. Konata's the top student. If even they can't handle those villains, what good are we!? We'll get killed—absolutely killed! We finally—"
"Mineta, calm down."
Asui placed a hand on Mineta's shoulder.
"I'm not suggesting we recklessly interfere. But we have to at least try something…"
Midoriya clenched his fists.
"Just like what we did earlier. Our powers… they can make a difference!"
…
"Huff… Looks like we pulled that off without too much danger…"
Swinging her Lightning Sword, Konata backed off quickly. Even though the attack missed, its silence debuff 1.5 seconds in a 10-meter radius and slow effect were enough to disrupt the five or six enemies charging in. Aizawa used the opening to bind them all with his capture cloth and hurl them into the crowd.
"Nice work."
Aizawa leapt back to Konata's side. Though it was their first time fighting together, their teamwork was solid. The enemies were just street-level thugs, emboldened by their numbers. Aizawa alone would've had a hard time, but with Konata acting as a crowd-control mage, it became a breeze.
More enemies? Good. If her ultimate hadn't been indiscriminate—risking friendly fire—Konata would've unleashed it already.
She electrified tight clusters with her Railgun, unleashed Iron Sand Storms, and silenced close-range threats with her Lightning Sword so Aizawa could clear them out. Their long-range and close-quarters synergy was getting tighter by the second.
"Of course. I'm ridiculously strong."
Konata exhaled, still alert to her surroundings.
"Three seconds left on Lightning Sword. Iron Sand Storm will be ready in—"
"Get back!!"
Before she could finish, Aizawa's urgent voice rang in her ears. A split-second later, his capture cloth wrapped around her and flung her away violently.
"Aizawa-sensei!?"
Staggering to her feet, Konata glared in frustration—but froze at the sight in front of her.
Somehow, a two-meter-tall, exposed-brain beak-faced monster had entered the battlefield. It stood over Aizawa, who lay motionless beneath its foot. His head was buried in shattered earth, blood spilling from cracks like a spiderweb.
In an instant, everything reversed.
"Run…"
Aizawa's weak, broken voice escaped his lips, just as the monster, Nomu, raised its fist.
But the punch never landed—because a brilliant beam of light smashed into its arm.
Dozens of meters away, Konata gritted her teeth, her burned, charred hand smoking.
So even a focused Railgun can't hurt that thing… If I launch a mass of coins together, maybe…
Her mind raced. The creeping sensation of death—one she'd felt before—surged again.
She should run. It was pointless. This monster couldn't be stopped. Not even Shana could match that speed. She hated trouble. She should take the chance Aizawa gave her to escape…
But like hell she'd let that happen.
Even if it was just for one second—she had to draw its attention! Or Aizawa would be killed—!
Then, in a blur, Nomu appeared in front of her. Everything stopped.
Agonizing pain shot through her limbs.
Nomu had one directive: follow orders. Originally, its mission was to capture Konata. But because she attacked it to save Aizawa, she became a threat. It adjusted accordingly.
"My hands and feet are… broken? So it doesn't want to kill me…"
Her legs collapsed beneath her, and she hit the ground hard. The pain was blinding, but in that pain, she found clarity. Fear was numbed.
"It's fine. I still have a chance. They broke my limbs to neutralize my quirk. But that's okay. They're underestimating me. If I can just preemptively disable that guy…"
Noumu grabbed her like luggage and threw her hard at the young man sitting on the steps—Tomura Shigaraki.
"...Tch."
She grunted, the taste of blood rising in her throat. Something warm was running from her lips.
"Ding—"
The coins she'd been clutching scattered with a musical jingle.
"Oh? Still got some fight in you?"
Shigaraki picked up one of the tokens, holding it in his hand as he looked at the girl sprawled before him, clearly amused.
Just a little closer…
Beneath her bangs, her predator's gaze locked onto him.
Just a little more…
But then—the voice she least wanted to hear rang out.
"SMASH!!!"
