Chapter 23: Chapter 23 : Charms

Anduin walked all around the castle and returned to the Great Hall from the Entrance Hall. Some people were already having breakfast there. Realizing he was hungry too, Anduin joined them.

"Hey, Anduin. I thought you hadn't gotten up yet. I didn't expect to find you here already. I was nice enough to wait for you in the common room this morning", said Vivian as she walked in through the doorway just as Anduin was sitting down, approaching him with a reproachful look on her face.

"Sorry, I woke up really early this morning, so you didn't need to wait for me. From now on, you don't have to worry about me in the mornings. I'm used to getting up early", Anduin explained to Vivian with a slightly apologetic expression.

"I won't wait for you again. What if you wander off somewhere early in the morning and can't find your way back? Let me tell you, it's a good thing our common room is right above the hall. Otherwise, the castle is so big I might not be able to find it", said Vivian, jumping from one topic to another.

"Don't worry. I've already explored most of the castle. I also found the classrooms where we'll be having lessons. Just follow me later", said Anduin before lowering his head and quickly starting to eat his breakfast.

While they were chatting, a flock of owls suddenly flew into the hall and dropped letters. Anduin also received several letters from Lily, Sirius, and Tom. The contents of the letters were mostly congratulations on being accepted to Hogwarts, while Sirius eagerly asked which house he had been sorted into and whether it was Gryffindor.

'That's going to disappoint you. If Sirius finds out I was sorted into Slytherin . . . will he end our friendship?'. Anduin thought with irony.

Then, Anduin put away the letters and headed to Charms class with Vivian.

Upon entering the classroom, Anduin discovered they would actually be having class together with Gryffindor. This puzzled him quite a bit. It's worth noting that the rivalry between Slytherin and Gryffindor runs deep, and even first-year students are affected by it after the Sorting.

Inside the classroom, Anduin spotted Charles, already seated and wearing Gryffindor robes. Anduin and Charles exchanged a nod, and then Anduin found a seat on the opposite side and sat down. Shortly after, the bell rang to signal the start of class.

The Charms professor, Filius Flitwick, was quite short and was said to be half-human, half-goblin. During class, he even had to stand on a stack of books so that students could see him clearly. And thus began Anduin's first class at Hogwarts.

In Anduin's opinion, what was taught in Charms was very basic. Only about a dozen common charms were covered throughout the entire year. In the first lesson, Professor Flitwick only went over some basic principles of charms without even getting to the spellcasting stage. This greatly decreased Anduin's interest in the class, knowing that he had already mastered all the first-year charms.

Anduin barely paid attention to the lecture. Instead, he pulled out a piece of parchment and began writing letters to his friends.

In his letter to Tom, he simply sent some basic greetings and reported that he was doing fine.

In the letters to Lily and Sirius, besides greetings, he also talked about being sorted into Slytherin and gave a general account of what he had seen and experienced since joining the house. He also expressed his concerns about the future, hoping both alumni could offer him some advice.

After carefully writing the letters, Anduin noticed that Professor Flitwick had finally finished explaining those magical theories, and that the practical spellcasting would begin in the second part of the class.

The first charm they would learn was the Levitation Charm, which Anduin was very familiar with. Professor Flitwick spent a lot of time explaining the gestures and incantations, and then let everyone start practicing by casting the spell on a feather to make it float.

The young wizards around him began to practice. For the most part, no one could even make the feather budge after chanting the spell the first time.

"Wingardium Leviosa, Wingardium Levio-sa . . . ". Vivian chanted beside him, mispronouncing the incantation while waving her wand frantically at the feather, her face turning red from the effort.

Anduin rolled his eyes. 'Did this girl put all her talent into gossip? Professor Flitwick explained it so clearly, yet she still manages to mess up the pronunciation'.

Across the room, Sampel Travers successfully made his feather float after a few attempts. Although it was shaking and looked like it might fall any second, he gave a smug grin to everyone around him after seeing his success.

Anduin saw that Professor Flitwick had stepped down from the podium and started moving around the classroom, so he couldn't afford to slack off anymore. As the professor approached, he had no choice but to pull out his wand and gently point it at the feather. The feather floated steadily in front of his wand, completely still.

'Damn, I forgot to say the incantation'.

Since Anduin was too familiar with the charm, he had cast it out of habit without using either gestures or the incantation.

"Excellent Levitation Charm, Mr. Wilson. Very well done", Professor Flitwick said as he walked over, apparently unaware that Anduin hadn't spoken the incantation. "Slytherin earns 2 points. This is almost a perfect casting of the Levitation Charm. Everyone, look to Wilson as an example".

Everyone in the room looked up at Flitwick and Anduin. Many young wizards stared at him with admiration—though not all the stares were friendly.

Anduin awkwardly accepted Flitwick's praise, knowing he hadn't used the correct technique and unsure if anyone had noticed.

"Did you not say the incantation just now?". Vivian whispered, leaning in close to him.

"Shh", Anduin hushed her, telling her not to say anything.

Anduin didn't want to stand out too much in class. He knew that the more attention you draw, the more dangerous it gets.

It seemed that Professor Flitwick truly hadn't noticed Anduin's shortcut, and he continued walking around, correcting and guiding the other students' gestures and pronunciation.

Anduin also gave up pretending to practice and instead turned to help Vivian. After correcting her gestures and pronunciation, Vivian finally managed to cast a fairly decent Levitation Charm right before class ended.

"Alright, that's all for today. Everyone, please write a six-inch essay on the Levitation Charm". Then Professor Flitwick paused and added:

"Mr. Anduin Wilson, please stay behind for a moment".

As expected, he hadn't completely escaped the professor's notice. Anduin gestured to Vivian not to wait for him and remained alone in the classroom.
