Chapter 11: Chapter 11 : Hagrid
Anduin had performed nearly a thousand similar spell-casting exercises in the past month, practicing every day until his magic and physical strength were exhausted.
In terms of defense, Anduin could precisely position the solidified invisible wall at any exact location, and he could also skillfully cast low-density Obstacle Curses that slowed down opponents. He even developed an "Obstruction Charm Shield," also known as the 'Impedimenta Shield,' which created a transparent shield about one meter in diameter, centered on his wand. This ensured a certain degree of defense even while moving, and he could summon and dismiss it at will, without having to wait for the spell to expire.
"Phew, that's enough for today. Maybe after practicing the Impedimenta spell a bit more, I'll fully grasp it. I have a feeling it won't be long before I can perform wandless magic with that curse." Anduin wiped the sweat from his forehead, quite satisfied with his current progress.
After making up his mind, Anduin began tidying up the courtyard. Just as he was halfway through, the wall suddenly cracked open. It turned out someone had opened the door of the Leaky Cauldron from Diagon Alley. A burly, bearded man over three meters tall emerged, wearing a dusty fur coat and with long, dark hair reaching his shoulders. Each step he took was like that of a giant, full of an imposing presence.
"Mr. Hagrid, long time no see. How did you get out of Diagon Alley?"
Although business at the Leaky Cauldron wasn't very busy, there were still some daily customers, and some patrolling Aurors would choose to have a drink at the pub after their shifts. Anduin had been practicing magic in the courtyard recently, so he had met a few people.
Hagrid was one of them. According to Tom, Hagrid was the Keeper of Keys and Grounds at Hogwarts and the gamekeeper of the Forbidden Forest. He occasionally came to the pub for a drink or went to Diagon Alley to buy supplies for Hogwarts—at least, that's what Hagrid said.
"Oh, Mr. Wilson, why are you always staying in the courtyard? I was originally going to bring an unregistered Muggle-born wizard to buy school supplies, but then I found out their family wasn't entirely Muggle. The young wizard's father was actually a Squib and was quite familiar with the magical world and had been to Diagon Alley, so there was no need for me."
Anduin looked at Hagrid speechlessly. He had asked why he came out, not what he came to do. Anduin had been practicing in the courtyard all afternoon and hadn't seen a single passerby. If there was no need, how could he have stayed inside for so long?
Anduin didn't press further and continued, "Is that so? Are you preparing to return to Hogwarts then?"
"Haha, I accompanied the student's parents to Diagon Alley early this morning. When I found out they didn't need my help, I just took a stroll down Knockturn Alley. Who knew I'd be wandering until evening? I haven't even had lunch yet. I'll just eat here and have a drink."
This Hagrid, in Anduin's opinion, was overly simple and honest. He had only chatted casually with him for a couple of sentences, and Hagrid was already telling him what he had for breakfast over the last few days.
Anduin had just finished his day's practice. They chatted idly as they entered the Leaky Cauldron through the back door.
"Hagrid, what good things did you buy today after wandering all day? That's a big bag."
Anduin noticed Hagrid was carrying a large package and asked curiously.
"This is dragon liver I bought! I got a huge bargain today. Guess how much this whole pound of dragon liver cost? You'll never guess! You won't find a deal this good anywhere else, haha!"
Hagrid happily boasted to Anduin about the great find he had made that day, and Anduin became even more curious when he heard it was dragon liver.
"Dragon liver? Is that a dragon's liver? I've never seen it before. Can I take a look?"
"Of course, my friend, no problem!" Hagrid generously agreed to Anduin's request and opened the package to show him.
"Wow, it looks so fresh! How are you going to use it? For potions?" Anduin looked at the opened package. This was only a part of the whole dragon liver, but even after being cut, its color was still very vibrant.
"Haha, I'm planning to make it into a meat paste when I get back and try it," Hagrid laughed.
"Can this stuff even be eaten?" Anduin poked the piece of dragon liver with his hand and found it was as fresh as if it had just been removed from an animal.
Hagrid laughed, "Of course! I've even eaten dragon meat before, but it's quite chaotic now, and not many people sell these things anymore. And even if they do, not many people necessarily buy them."
Anduin thought about it and felt that this stuff seemed no different from lamb liver or pig liver.
"Making it into meat paste is such a waste! Why don't you try other flavors? I'll show you my skills and stir-fry some scallion-fried dragon liver for you to try." Anduin felt that if he followed the method for scallion-fried pork liver, the taste should be similar. Besides, he also wanted to taste what dragon liver was like.
"You're only eleven, aren't you? You can cook?"
"Anduin's cooking skills are really excellent," Tom, the owner of the Leaky Cauldron, chimed in at that moment. "I've been eating with him every day for the past half-month, and I even want to learn a few tricks from him. If he ever writes a magical cookbook, it'll definitely be a bestseller."
Since Anduin moved in, Tom hadn't charged him for meals, but the condition was that Anduin cooked for him.
When the topic of magical cookbooks came up, Anduin had also learned a bit from Tom. In his opinion, it was essentially like programming with spells, where readers would cast spells one by one according to the recipe to create dishes that were largely consistent with the cookbook, which was very convenient.
Tom had several cookbooks, and Anduin had read them. They were quite useful, but first, one had to learn many household spells, such as the 'Stirring Charm,' 'Culinary Cutting Charm,' 'Timing Charm,' etc. However, many of the finished dishes in the cookbooks Anduin had read left a lot to be desired in terms of taste.
"Is that so? Well then, go ahead and try, Anduin." Hagrid seemed quite indifferent; to him, it was a bargain anyway.
Anduin took the dragon liver into the kitchen. Only when he held it in his hand did he realize the dragon liver's uniqueness. According to Hagrid, it was leftover stock from a vendor in Knockturn Alley that had been sitting for a long time, which was why it was sold at a low price. Yet, it still had residual warmth in his hand and a unique fishy smell.
Anduin went back to his room and cut a lot of the scallions he had grown, adding onions, ginger, soy sauce, cooking wine, and the sliced dragon liver for marination. Then he stir-fried it. Considering Hagrid's physique, he also made a few other small dishes and arranged them all on the table.
Hagrid and Tom, who had been smelling the aroma, stared intently at the plate of food in Anduin's hands as if it were some treasure.
After starting to eat, Hagrid's eyes lit up after just one bite, exclaiming how delicious it was. Anduin also tasted it. The flavor was different from pig liver or lamb liver; it was mellow on the palate and surprisingly had a crispy texture when chewed.
Hagrid and Tom were in high spirits. Tom even brought out a treasured large bottle of redcurrant rum to share with Hagrid. In no time, both of them were tipsy, and Hagrid kept praising Anduin's cooking skills.
