Chapter 110: Chapter 108
Director Cameron Chase stood at the perimeter of the crime scene, her sharp eyes scanning the devastation. DEO agents moved methodically, disguised in standard law enforcement uniforms, carefully documenting each detail of the massacre. Her crisp black suit and composed demeanor stood out even among the chaos.
"Agent Gulliver," Chase called, her voice cutting through the ambient noise of emergency vehicles. "Report."
Gulliver approached, his tablet displaying preliminary forensic data. "Multiple casualties, Director. Precise, surgical kills. Minimal collateral damage. The attackers - or attacker - seemed to target specifically the transport vehicle."
Chase raised an eyebrow. "The radioactive container?"
"Confirmed missing," Gulliver replied. "No trace of the cargo or the perpetrator."
She nodded, her gaze sweeping across the blood-stained street. "I want every fragment of evidence collected. DNA, metal fragments, energy signatures. Nothing gets missed."
Another agent approached, holding a bagged piece of metallic debris. "Director, we found this. Doesn't match any known material in our database."
Chase took the evidence bag, examining the fragment closely. Her expression remained neutral, but her mind was already analyzing potential scenarios.
"Continue the investigation," she instructed. "I want a full report within the hour."
Director Cameron Chase watched as Lena Luthor approached the crime scene, her heels clicking against the pavement. The Lexcorp CEO's emerald green suit stood out against the gray backdrop of emergency vehicles and forensic teams.
"Director Chase," Lena greeted, her voice smooth and controlled.
"Ms. Luthor," Chase responded, her tone professional but guarded.
Lena's gaze swept over the DEO agents meticulously collecting evidence. "I'll need you and your team to clear the area immediately. This is a Lexcorp private matter."
Chase's posture remained unchanged. "We're conducting a federal investigation into a potential terrorist incident involving radioactive materials. The DEO has full jurisdiction."
"I disagree," Lena said, her green eyes meeting Chase's with unwavering intensity. "Lexcorp will handle this internally. I must insist that you and your agents leave the scene."
Chase stood her ground. "We're not going anywhere. This is an active investigation that involves potential national security risks."
Lena continued to press her point, her voice maintaining its calm but firm tone. "Lexcorp will manage this situation. Your presence is no longer required."
Director Cameron Chase stared at Lena Luthor, her jaw clenched. The silence between them crackled with tension. After a long moment, Chase made a subtle hand gesture to her agents. "Pack up," she said curtly. "We're done here."
The DEO team began collecting their equipment, casting uncertain glances between Chase and Lena. As the last agent loaded the final evidence case into their van, Chase held Lena's gaze for a beat longer before turning to leave.
Lena pulled out her phone and motioned to her assistant, who quickly approached. "I want a full trace on the stolen shipment," she said, her voice low and controlled. "Find out exactly what was taken and who was responsible."
The assistant nodded, already tapping notes into a tablet. "Right away, Ms. Luthor."
Director Cameron Chase pulled Agent Gulliver aside, her voice low and precise. "Collect everything we can from this scene. Every fragment, every trace of evidence. And keep surveillance on the Luthors - especially Lena. I want to know their every move."
Gulliver nodded, understanding the gravity of the instruction. He began directing a small team to meticulously gather forensic evidence, carefully bagging fragments of metal, collecting soil samples, and documenting the crime scene with high-resolution cameras.
Chase watched as her agents worked, her eyes scanning the perimeter one last time before turning to leave. The stolen radioactive container represented more than just a potential security threat - it was a puzzle piece that needed careful investigation.
As she walked toward her SUV, Gulliver caught up with her. "We'll begin tracking the Luthor communications and financial transactions immediately," he reported.
"Good," Chase responded curtly. "Discretion is paramount."
…
The Auto Vajin's engine hummed beneath Haruka as he navigated through National City's streets. Suddenly, a notification pinged on his system. Director Cameron Chase's message flashed across the screen: "Urgent. DEO headquarters. Now."
Haruka adjusted his course, the motorcycle's sleek frame cutting through traffic with precision. He tapped his communication device, sending a quick message to Kara.
Minutes later, Haruka pulled up to the DEO headquarters, the Auto Vajin dissolving into system space as he approached the entrance. Kara was already waiting, her blonde hair catching the sunlight.
"You got the message too?" Haruka asked, falling into step beside her.
Kara nodded, a mix of curiosity and anticipation in her voice. "Chase doesn't usually call us both in unless something big is happening."
They exchanged a knowing glance, both wondering what trouble awaited them this time. The automatic doors of the DEO headquarters slid open, revealing the bustling command center.
Director Chase stood at the central console, her sharp eyes already fixed on Haruka and Kara as they entered.
"What happened, Director?"
"A Lexcorp shipment was stolen last night," she began without preamble.
Haruka stepped forward. "What kind of shipment?"
"Radioactive material," Chase replied, pulling up surveillance images on the large screen. The warehouse crime scene looked like a massacre - bodies scattered, precise kill marks everywhere.
Kara leaned closer, studying the images. After a moment, she quipped, "Well, at least it wasn't Kryptonite."
Chase's eyes narrowed. "This isn't a joke, Danvers. Radioactive material in the wrong hands could be catastrophic."
"How much material are we talking about?" Haruka asked, his tone serious.
"Enough to cause significant damage if weaponized," Chase said. "And right now, we have no idea who took it or what they intend to do."
Kara's brief moment of levity vanished. The severity of Chase's tone made it clear this was a critical situation. The stolen radioactive material represented a serious threat, and its potential for destruction hung heavy in the air.
Haruka stepped forward, his brow furrowed. "Did you call us here to help find the culprit?"
Director Chase shook her head firmly. "My agents will handle the investigation. What I need from you two is something different." She pulled up a holographic image of Lena Luthor from the crime scene. "Lena Luthor is acting suspicious. I want you both to keep a close eye on her."
Kara tensed slightly. Her connection to the Luthor family was complicated, and she knew better than most how unpredictable they could be. "Why do you want us to monitor her?" she asked.
"Her behavior at the crime scene was unusual," Chase explained. "She was adamant about the DEO leaving immediately and seemed more concerned about controlling the narrative than understanding what happened." She turned to face Haruka and Kara directly. "I want to know why."
Kara nodded at Director Chase, her expression professional. "We'll do our best to keep an eye on Lena Luthor."
As they exited the DEO headquarters, Kara glanced at Haruka and let out a wry chuckle. "Spying on a Luthor? Not exactly how I planned to spend my day."
Haruka offered a small, optimistic smile. "Maybe we won't find anything suspicious. Could be a routine investigation."
Kara raised an eyebrow, her voice tinged with sardonic humor. "Rider, she's a Luthor. We will always find something. And trust me, it's not going to be pleasant."
