Chapter 57 Reporting to Heaven
Hai Feng showed considerable talent in martial arts and could endure hardships.
At least, during the Foundation Establishment Stage, his speed was faster than others', a benefit stemming from the mana inside his body, which allowed him to recover physical fatigue more quickly than ordinary people.
Sun Wukong's eyes revealed some thoughtfulness, "Not bad, this youngster being chosen by the fiendish spirit of Moro does show he has some talent, though he still has an innate aversion towards non-human demons."
This aversion was not just an internal thought, but also evident on his face.
Whenever martial artists from the demon tribes came close, his expression would darken, clearly showing his dislike for demons.
Theoretically speaking, the demons of Huaguo Mountain, before the third month, had been requested by him to further their transformations, that is, to retain only their racial traits like Ao Yun.
Initially, the demons were quite reluctant, but over time, as their aesthetic appreciation became more aligned with humans, those capable of further transformation did so, retaining only their race-specific features such as horns or tails.
And humans, witnessing such transformed demons, felt closer to them than before.
Otherwise, retaining only a few beastly features, these demons had a unique beauty that fit human aesthetics, to the extent that some single human males held the newly transformed demon females in high esteem.
However, Hai Feng was somewhat stern and showed intense aversion towards the demons; even when some demons showed goodwill, he merely nodded indifferently.
So aloof, who would want to befriend him?
Even his roommates in the same dormitory could hardly have a few words with him.
After all, most people from Huaguo Mountain were close to the demons there. Just you, being so different and with a seemingly deep-seated grudge, who wouldn't avoid you if they could?
While erasing Hai Feng's memories of Moro, Sun Wukong also looked into his entire life; because his parents were killed by a wolf demon and Moro's spirit took advantage during his vulnerability, he harbored a deep hatred for demons from his heart.
If this hatred was not removed, it would eventually evolve into a demonic heart, turning him into a true puppet of Moro.
The reason Sun Wukong didn't erase his memory of the wolf demon killing his parents as well was because it related to Hai Feng's personal experience, and he didn't want to interfere with that.
Moreover, he held some expectations for the young Hai Feng.
If he could overcome it, he would surely soar high and far, free like a fish leaping through vast seas or a bird soaring through the wide sky.
If not,
it wouldn't be a loss for Sun Wukong.
Without Moro's bewitchment, the youth would need to be content with the status quo of Huaguo Mountain and eventually become one of its worldly members.
With Huaguo Mountain's destiny set, unless Hai Feng encountered an extraordinary opportunity, he was unlikely to cause any trouble.
Leaving the Three Lifes Book City, Sun Wukong calculated the time and said, "The end of the year is approaching; I should go up to Heaven to report my duties, and the banquet I promised to Taibai needs to be arranged."
Within a month, Huaguo Mountain remained calm and stable in its development.
Sun Wukong, now three hundred and thirty-two years old, rode the clouds towards the Southern Heavenly Gate.
The Growth King greeted the Eastern Leisurely Spirit King along with Pang, Liu, Gou, Bi, and other generals of the Thunder Division, with a smile, "What brings the Spirit King here?"
Sun Wukong stepped forward, hooked his arm around the Growth King's shoulder with familiarity and said, "I'm here to report to Heaven."
"Then please come in quickly," said the Growth King with a serious face, "don't delay your duties."
Sun Wukong laughed heartily, "After this, I shall host a banquet at Huaguo Mountain, and the Growth King along with the other three brothers should attend as well."
"That... might not be possible."
The Growth King shook his head, "The four of us brothers guard the Four Great Heavenly Gates, and it is our duty to do so; we can't attend the banquet, I hope the Spirit King understands."
"So it is," said Sun Wukong with a look of regret, but he also knew that most of the immortals in Heaven had their duties, such as Wenqu Star and Wuqu Star, who, besides attending court, constantly monitored mortal affairs. All the stars had similar responsibilities, so they were unlikely to have the time to attend a banquet in the lower realm.
The Flat Peach Banquet in Heaven was probably the only leisure time these deities had.
But Sun Wukong wasn't upset. Although most of the heavenly deities were busy, there were some who weren't, like Taibaijinxing.
Although the old man was in charge of battles in the human realm, he only handled major wars, leaving trivial skirmishes to other stars like Jidu Star and Luohu Star, who were fierce stars.
Correspondingly, Taibai's position was relatively leisurely.
"Growth King, don't be upset; I'll bring some drinks and share them with you," Sun Wukong patted the Growth King's chest, then strode into the Southern Heavenly Gate.
Upon entering Tongming Hall, he handed over the documents in his hand to General Juanlian, instructing him to deliver them to the Jade Emperor.
At that moment, the Jade Emperor was in his study, looking through petitions, talismans, and documents submitted by various gods and deities. Seeing General Juanlian arrive with a document, he asked, "Whose document is this?"
General Juanlian respectfully prostrated on the ground, holding the document above his head, "Your Majesty, this is the document of the Eastern Leisurely Spirit King from Huaguo Mountain in Dongsheng Divine Continent, summarizing the affairs of the year."
"Present it," said the Jade Emperor, intrigued.
"Yes!"
General Juanlian presented the document on the desk, and the Jade Emperor picked it up, flipped through it, and smiled, "This monkey, his handwriting isn't bad."
The strokes raced across the page like dragons and snakes, the strong lines exuding vigor.
Merely observing the calligraphy was a pleasure in itself.
"Huaguo Mountain has established the Three Lifes Academy, teaching and educating, allowing the myriad spirits to learn manners, recognize words, and discern right from wrong; that's indeed commendable," the Jade Emperor occasionally nodded in approval. Although some of the rules deviated from those in Heaven, it was understandable given it was the mortal realm.
Moreover, within this book, the phrase "adapt to local conditions" was brilliantly used, truly reflecting the principles of the Heavenly Dao.
Before long, the Jade Emperor had flipped to the last page, which contained records concerning Eternal Coins and Heavenly Dao Currency. Even at the book's end, the back cover was embedded with four coins of the Heavenly Dao Eternal Currency in black, bronze, silver, and gold.
The Jade Emperor took them out, weighed them in hand, and then laid them on the desk for a closer look. The obverse showed the sun, moon, and stars reflecting light, with the characters for "Heavenly Dao"; the reverse displayed mountains, rivers, plants, and insects, with the characters for "Eternal."
This was because, on the four denominations – black, red, silver, gold – the characters for "Heavenly Dao" and "Eternal" also varied in color correspondingly.
Feeling the meaning within, these were currencies recognized by the Heavenly Dao.
"The Leisurely Spirit King truly has great talent, to actually create a currency recognized by the Heavenly Dao. And with the currency clear and translucent, divided into black, red, silver, and gold, it can withstand the efforts of arduous cultivation; indeed, a reward is in order."
The Jade Emperor, feeling deeply impressed, collected the four Eternal Coins of the Heavenly Dao and said to General Juanlian, "The Eastern Leisurely Spirit King, Sun Wukong of Huaguo Mountain, has made meritorious contributions in educating the myriad spirits and has created the Eternal Currency of the Heavenly Dao, a righteous way to prosperity.
I grant him a reward of a thousand gold blossoms to be added to his salary for a total of two thousand; additionally, I grant him a thousand bottles of imperial wine and a thousand Spirit Pills."
"As you command!"
General Juanlian bowed deeply again and went to prepare.
The Jade Emperor, however, was contemplating whether to appoint Sun Wukong as a God of Wealth.
In Heaven, there were five types of Gods of Wealth—
The Central Wealth God: Wang Hai, who was positioned in the center.
The Civil Wealth God: Bi Gan, a servant of the business class, positioned in the east; Fan Li, who had recently ascended to Heaven and was known as the "Saint of Commerce" in Nanshan Continent, was thus appointed by the Jade Emperor as a Civil Wealth God, positioned in the south.
The Martial Wealth God: Zhao Gongming, one of the Lei Department officials, positioned in the north.
There were also Wealth Gods for the other four directions: Duanmuci positioned in the southwest, Li Guizu positioned in the northeast, Guan Zhong positioned in the southeast, and Bai Gui positioned in the northwest. First published on M|V|L!EMPYR.
The Martial Wealth God was missing one in the west; perhaps Sun Wukong could fill the position…—
The Jade Emperor gave it some thought but felt it was inappropriate.
The Eastern Leisurely Spirit King was equal in rank to the Five Elders; a mere Martial Wealth God seemed hardly befitting.
However, since the currency he created was recognized by the Heavenly Dao, it would be unreasonable not to confer upon him the position of a God of Wealth. Maybe a new overarching role should be established for the God of Wealth, allowing him to govern the five types of Wealth Gods?
This indeed seemed like a good idea, yet it couldn't be decided on just like that. The realm of wealth could not reveal its depths in a short time; it would be discussed centuries later.
At this time, General Juanlian had already prepared the salary and rewards mentioned by the Jade Emperor, bringing them into the Hall of Light and presenting them to Sun Wukong, saying, "Leisurely King, these are the Jade Emperor's rewards and your salary for this year, I hope you will accept them."
"Thank you."
Sun Wukong didn't check the contents and, with a technique of space, collected them into his palm. He then left the Hall of Light, found Taibaijinxing, and invited him to attend the banquet he had promised to host, also asking Taibaijinxing to help him send out invitations to other deities in Heaven.
After all, he spent most of his time on Huaguo Mountain and was not well-acquainted with most of the deities in Heaven, so he could only rely on Taibaijinxing.
"I'm realizing now, you little monkey, once you're familiar with someone, you make yourself right at home," Taibaijinxing said with an amused chuckle. "I'm an old man, and you're asking me to run around delivering invitations. Other than the Emperor, you're the first to ask this of me."
"Heh, Taibai, my good brother, we're quite close now, isn't it only right that you lend a hand?"
Sun Wukong looped his arm around Taibaijinxing's shoulder, chatting and laughing, "If it's not enough, I'll send you ten bottles of Jadescent Nectar that old Jade Emperor gave me, how about that?"
Ten bottles?
Taibaijinxing thought to himself that the Leisurely Spirit King was so generous, so surely the Emperor must have granted him more than a hundred bottles.
"How could ten bottles be enough?"
"Oh? My good brother Taibai has a large appetite, then how about fifteen bottles?" Sun Wukong said with a smile.
"I want twenty bottles," Taibaijinxing said, stroking his beard.
"No problem."
Hearing Sun Wukong's straightforward agreement, Taibaijinxing was inwardly annoyed: "I asked for too little."
However, since he had already spoken, he agreed to the task and set off on a cloud to pass the message to others in Heaven; after all, Sun Wukong didn't reject any visitors.
After leaving Taibaijinxing's abode, Sun Wukong made his way to Tianhe Drill Ground and found dozens of marshals in Heaven arranging troop exercises. Nezha was also there, sparring with marshals from various aquatic forces.
The one Nezha was competing against was none other than Marshal Tianpeng.
He had a wide frame and a large body, wielding a nine-toothed rake glowing with auspicious energy. He swung at Nezha's head without using any skillful techniques.
With a single rake strike, Nezha nimbly dodged aside, and the rake's teeth became lodged in the metal stones of the sparring stage.
The marshal pulled several times but failed to dislodge it, giving Nezha the opportunity to kick him flying off the stage, causing him to tumble and land upside down.
"Ouch!"
Marshal Tianpeng let out a cry, clutching his backside as he clumsily got back on his feet...
