Chapter 10: Dynamic practice
Jace couldn't help but feel a sense of satisfaction. His training was still progressing well, and the orbs were responding pretty precisely to his commands. The movements were smooth and controlled, but there was still definitely room for improvement.
After watching the duel though, he wanted to practice more active techniques. Getting up, he headed out to one of the larger rooms. As he entered, he heard the calm voice again. "Welcome, student Jace. Please announce what training you would like to do."
Jace started stretching as he considered his options. "Let's do dynamic attack and defense training, please," he said, finishing his stretches.
On the other side of the room, multiple elemental turrets rose from the floor, their surfaces glowing faintly as they charged different shots. The air grew tense, the faint crackle of energy signaling the start of the session. Jace summoned his ice and earth, focusing on those elements for this training. A shield of compacted earth formed around him, while shards of ice hovered at his fingertips, ready to strike.
The first turret quickly shot three targets, their forms glowing faintly as they moved through the air. At the same time, a second turret launched a lightning bolt at him, its sharp crack echoing through the room. Jace reacted quickly, dropping to his right knee and pushing off with his left leg to slide to the right. As he moved, he shot three of the ice shards he had formed at the targets, each one striking true and shattering the glowing forms.
With his left hand, Jace formed a compact earth barrier, small and sturdy. The lightning bolt crashed into the shield with a heavy thud, the impact reverberating through his arm and pushing him back slightly. Jace gritted his teeth, steadying himself as he absorbed the force.
Before he could fully recover, a turret from behind made a loud charging noise, its energy building with a low hum. Simultaneously, the first turret shot another target quickly to the left. Jace planted his left hand on the ground, forming a barrier behind him to block the incoming attack. Using his hand as a pivot, he twisted to his left, throwing another ice shard at the target. The shard struck true, shattering the glowing form with a satisfying crack.
The turret from behind finally released, shooting a torrent of water that cascaded into his barrier. The force of the water splashed over the top, drenching him slightly and sending a chill through his body. Jace gritted his teeth, steadying himself as he absorbed the impact.
Before he could catch his breath, a final turret unleashed a mass of flames, the heat radiating through the room. The last target was launched behind the wall of fire, its glowing form barely visible through the flames. Jace quickly formed an ice umbrella in front of him, the cold surface absorbing the impact of the flames. The heat kissed his arms as the umbrella began to melt, the water dripping down and pooling at his feet.
However, Jace had planned for this. Taking the water that remained, he compressed it into a spear, the liquid forming a sharp, glistening point. With a swift motion, he launched the spear through the flames, its trajectory precise. The water spear struck the target with a satisfying splash, shattering the glowing form and extinguishing the flames in its path.
