It Seems My Job Aptitude Didn't Come with Human Rights

Chapter 5

「Past Chapter」 Reincarnated in Another World

The scenery changed. It was now inside some building. I had thought it would transition to the usual Great Temple scenery, but instead, it resembled a luxurious inn room. The ceiling was high, and the windows were large. However, I was particularly intrigued by the meticulously crafted furniture.

Had reincarnation really taken place?

「... Could this be a setting where I've reincarnated, passed out, and then woken up in an inn?」

As I murmured this, I was slightly surprised that my own voice seemed oddly high.

No, in the first place, how could I actually have the sensation of rising from a physical body?

Thinking about it that way, I felt the smooth texture of fabric on my palms and fingertips. It wasn't cotton, but rather a fine, soft feeling like silk.

「Oh, have you awoken, master Lars?」

At that moment, I suddenly heard a slightly high-pitched female voice. It seemed to come from a little further off to my left. Confused, I turned in the direction of the voice, and there stood a girl from the beast tribe. A dark red-haired girl with a coppery hue reaching her shoulders, and triangular beast ears resembling those of a cat. Her outfit was a maid's dress, primarily in popular black and white.

A maid in an inn?

That question lingered faintly, but more than anything else, I was stunned by the realism of the graphics. It wasn't just the texture of her clothes and skin. Each individual strand of hair was crafted with painstaking detail. Additionally, the subtle rise and fall of her shoulders with her breathing, her manner of blinking, and her expression revealed a complex shift as if she was waiting for my reaction or was puzzled.

「... In this latest update, has the quality of all NPCs risen to this level? No way.」

「Uh, update? N-NPC?」

To my surprise, the girl repeated the words I had spoken. It seemed she couldn't comprehend the game terminology in this world setting. She tilted her head, speaking in an endearing voice.

As the vision of something resembling bedding shifted in my peripheral vision, I suddenly understood that I was on a bed. Moving in a crawling position across the oversized bed, I made my way toward the girl. Sitting up on the edge of the bed, I took the time to observe her more carefully.

「W-What is it...?」

The girl, startled at my sudden approach, seemed understandably surprised. Indeed, the realism was astonishing. It was said that the graphics had evolved rapidly with the release of this game, LOG, yet even so, the sophisticated advancement seemed incredible. The atmosphere that conveyed her tension and anxiety—how on earth did they render such a thing in a game?

Were her reactions predefined? If so, what was the meaning of repeating the words I'd just spoken? Could conversation with AI now be possible, perhaps?

「May I ask you a question?」

「Y-yes! If it's something I can answer...」

For some reason, the girl replied in a flustered manner, as if implying a master-servant relationship. In hindsight, if this wasn't an inn but a wealthy aristocrat's mansion, the girl's maid-like demeanor might indeed be fitting.

「Could you tell me about yourself?」

When I asked, the girl blinked her eyes open before promptly speaking.

「I-I am Irinya Lilia! I'm a cat-type beastman, purchased by the Count of Fallentail five... no, six years ago! I am so grateful for the wonderful treatment that the count's family extends to all of us, something unimaginable for slaves. I consider it an honor!」

The girl named Irinya recited this as if in a job interview. Despite that, she seemed somehow frightened. Was she perhaps a character involved in some event? Even if so, the quality was astoundingly high.

「Irinya. That's a cute name. Is it because you're a cat?」

「Huh? Oh, thank you...」

When I complimented her name, Irinya seemed flustered but revealed a visibly bashful expression, pulling her chin back. Her somewhat downcast, embarrassed demeanor appeared more childlike, despite her seemingly tall stature. If I had to make an educated guess based on appearance, she seemed around ten years old. I hadn't known beastmen were supposed to be tall, so this didn't fit any known setting.

Pondering this, originally prompted by the way she addressed me, I began to reconsider the circumstances from the first moment she spoke. She engaged with me right after the reincarnation event, expecting a player's reaction. If so, the pattern could be slightly narrowed down. However, there were bound to be players who ignored such prompts. Considering the flexibility displayed, it seemed apparent that AI governed conversation.

Coming to this conclusion, something else from our initial exchange suddenly rang a bell. It was a particular term that had caught my attention.

「Oh? Lars, you say? Am I Lars?」

If she was addressing someone by name, it ought to be the character's name. However, my character wasn't named Lars.

Puzzled, I inquired, prompting Irinya to tilt her head as she nodded.

「Y-yes. To my utmost respect, master Lars is Lars Lien Fallentail... the heir to the Count of Fallentail's house.」
