It Seems My Job Aptitude Didn't Come with Human Rights

Chapter 4

「Flashback Arc」 Reincarnation System

I hurried home faster than usual and entered my familiar one-room apartment. As soon as I stepped inside, I headed to the back of the room and pressed the power button on my gaming computer with my index finger.

It booted up immediately, but I reminded myself not to rush. There were still five minutes to go.

In that time, I changed out of my suit into my comfy fleece loungewear and prepared some drinks. With one bag of snacks, I figured I could stay in front of the computer for at least five hours without moving.

For drinks, I had a carbonated beverage to boost my spirits. The fizzy taste was delicious.

With these thoughts in mind, I clicked on the LOG icon while holding the latest VR goggles in my hand. I put on the VR goggles.

For a brief moment, a pitch-black window appeared in my vision before the logo of LOG's operating company displayed. After that, the words 'Lord of Grandeur' glimmered against a vast world backdrop.

As the grand music faded in, I busily made my preparations to play. I was confident that my movements during this moment were more refined than anyone else's.

After all, I was acting with the VR goggles slightly askew. Not falling over was impressive enough.

Just as I was about to move to the character selection screen, the word 'update' appeared, and I reflexively clicked 'agree'. I skipped over all the text, but there shouldn't be any problems.

As the loading screen appeared, a gradient-colored bar in shades of gray extended from left to right. This major update had a large capacity, so it took a little time.

While waiting, I fidgeted on my chair, sitting cross-legged and swinging my feet. Finally, the screen transitioned from the loading screen to the character selection screen.

Four characters I had created appeared, and I selected the one on the far right. The current status and equipment list were displayed. The level was maxed out, and I had cleared the conditions for reincarnation.

The character had blue hair and navy eyes, a handsome young man. Prioritizing functionality over appearance, his equipment felt slightly mismatched, but his strength was considerable.

However, his profession was an advanced class of the merchant line, a magitech engineer, typically unsuitable for combat.

Of course, the knight character on the far left was the strongest for one-on-one battles, and the magician next to him was most excellent in siege warfare. But what if they reincarnated?

Probably, no, without a doubt, this magitech engineer would become the strongest.

The issue of skill points, the cause of being labeled jack-of-all-trades, master-of-none, would be resolved.

Moreover, focusing on specialized stats would fully maximize the strengthening ratio.

Imagining the future appearance of the character I crafted, I got excited, switched to the VR exclusive controller, and selected the character.

The screen went dark, and the scenery of the area where I previously stopped stretched out before me.

Since I planned to reincarnate immediately after the update, the place was the grand temple in the capital city of the Kingdom of Yetaland, where I belonged.

It was a massive temple built with pure white stone, so tall you had to look up to see the top. I had visited many times before, but its majestic appearance always moved me.

However, more important now was reincarnation. I would be the first to test the new system. Already, other players were gathering from behind. This was the battlefield where I couldn't afford to lose.

With that thought, I entered, but I was surprised to find the scenery inside the grand temple had changed. Or rather, I was taken aback.

"Huh? Where is this?"

I involuntarily muttered. The inside of the temple, where light from stained-glass windows should have fallen in a rainbow of colors, was instead filled with a beautiful expanse of water.

Though it was supposed to be indoors, a dark background stretched out, enveloping everything in an engulfing darkness. Meanwhile, blue columns of light rose from the water pillars, creating a fantastical space.

At the center lay a land of white sand with a narrow path of white sand extending from my feet to that land.

Was I supposed to walk here? With that thought, I walked along the white sand. The visuals felt so realistic that it seemed like I was in the real world. While LOG's graphics were said to be abnormally high quality given the vast world it allowed multiplayer exploration of, the sight inside the grand temple was on par with reality.

"... This is amazing."

Is this what it means to be breath-taken? I felt mesmerized by the imagery as I walked. The sensation of walking on fine sand, the touch, the strangely cold air.

As I experienced these, feeling a slight unease, I stood upon the white sand island.

Immediately, a white light descended from above. I heard a beautiful female voice and wondered if this was where I needed to choose whether or not to reincarnate. Of course, yes. There was no need to think twice.

However, unexpectedly, the female voice spoke in a strange language, not Japanese. Was this a bug, or an error? Had the language settings gone awry?

I considered this, but reincarnation was more important than error reporting at the moment. I felt like something was being asked, so without hesitation, I replied, "Yes."

If it didn't work, I could try again.

Thinking that way, I found myself enveloped by a white light, so it seemed I made the right choice, and I felt relieved.
