Chapter 500 - The Commotion in Aeterdumnox (Part 1)
I spoke to get the attention of one of the guards who still looked shaken because of the unexplainable occurrences in the other side of the territory. Still trying to do his job even through all of the confusion, he asked with a shaky voice, "State your name and the purpose of your visit."
I gave a cordial smile and answered, "I am looking for King Cynfael. Tell him that an envoy from Eieneos is here to meet him."
The guard bowed once and asked one of the other guards to take his post so that he can relay my message to the king. I simply stood in front of the gates patiently, enjoying the shocked reactions of the guards and even some of the blood demon citizens.
I did not wait that long before the same guard I talked with a while ago came running back to where I was. He looked frantic but he calmed down after realizing I was still waiting by the gates patiently, He hurriedly guided me back inside the palace, through the maze-like corridors for several minutes then finally to the king's chambers. The guard respectfully opened the door for me to go in but he did not dare to enter the king's chambers at all.
Upon entering the king's chambers, I saw King Cynfael himself stand up abruptly from his throne then walk towards me with hurried steps. He greeted me politely but obviously too enthusiastically for someone whom he only met for the first time. You can see it in his actions that there was a sense of desperation and urgency to see and talk to me the soonest. He also must have heard the news about the sudden disappearance of the whole dark elf territory.
King Cynfael immediately guided me to his drawing room and called for some of his servants to get us some snacks and refreshments for our meeting. He asked me to sit on one of the plush chairs then sat on another one which was right across from me. He honestly looked restless and nervous as of the moment.
I am not one to waste time so while we were waiting for the refreshments to arrive, I asked him a direct question, "Do you have an inkling as to why I am here, your highness?"
The king looked at me with wide eyes for a few seconds before responding, "There are a few possibilities I can think of as to why you are here but I do not want to assume anything. I would also like to ask you a few questions, if that is alright?"
I smiled at the king and responded in an amused tone, "Before anything else, I would like to formally introduce myself. My name is Luna and I am the current queen of Eieneos. I indeed came here due to a couple of different things that I would like to discuss with you. As for the questions you want to ask me, I don't mind as long as I don't get in trouble for answering them, I guess?"
The short exchange was followed by an awkward silence between us. He seemed to be very cautious and did not dare to ask any questions before I do. After a few minutes, the refreshments finally came which was an assortment of biscuits and a pot of fragrant tea. It was much more normal than I expected since I was expecting to be served food based on their main sustenance.
After eating a biscuit and taking a sip of my tea, I decided to start the conversation. Seeing that the king doesn't seem to have any intentions to eat or drink, I asked the king how much he knows about my deal with the dark elves. He readily admitted that his knowledge was quite limited since it was only based on information from his spies who can barely get near King Eirsolin's quarters. He only knew that the dark elves paid a huge price to be able to move to a safer place with my help.
I looked at him and responded, "You barely know anything then..." King Cynfael then looked at me in confusion. Before he could ask, I raised my hand and casted a barrier spell to stop anyone from entering the drawing room and hearing what we are about to talk about. As to why I suddenly did so, it was because a certain prince is already on his way to where I was and it is not yet the right time for me to talk to him.
King Cynfael's face turned pale as he realized that he is currently trapped inside a barrier with me. It seems like he has already called to his son so he can join the discussion but that is not how it works here. He can't come in this room without my permission.
I smiled and gave a knowing look to Cynfael and declared, "The dark elves possessed one of the many elemental orbs that was stolen from the deity that created the world tree realm. That was the payment I asked from them in exchange for giving the dark elves' sustenance and helping them find and move to a safer living space. Void also did numerous information gathering tasks and miscellaneous tasks for me as part of our cooperation."
Cynfael nodded his head in understanding and murmured, "That was why Eirsolin said that we won't be able to match the things that he paid for to get benefits from you. He knew that we do not possess that orb nor we have anything left of value to offer. Why are you telling me this all of a sudden?"
I smiled and said, "I would like offer the same benefit to your people as long as I am satisfied on what you are willing to trade it for. I would like to tell you that the dark elves are now living in the new world tree realm. I helped them move all of their remaining belongings there just this morning."
Upon hearing the details, Cynfael's face became more and more serious as he looked to be pondering something very important. He must be calculating his next move and what offer he can provide which I would be willing to accept in exchange for his people's chance at a new life.
I smiled at King Cynfael and discussed that I am nothing but a land lady who expects tenants of my land to pay some form of rent using their own mana. Cynfael did not have any qualms about accepting this condition since he said that he isn't comfortable accepting freebies, alms or pity no matter how hard things got for him and his people.
I started to admire this leader in front of me since he was resilient, just and his heart goes to his people. Since that is out of the way, I signaled him to ask his question for me.
Cynfael looked at me in all seriousness and finally asked, "I hope for your honest answer on the matter I will be asking about. I would like to ask if you have ever met with my son before?"
He was staring at my face intently trying to catch any type of reaction from me but I did not give away anything. I simply stared back at him but did not respond immediately. The longer I stayed silent, the more nervous the king became. He is clearly the one on the losing end in this negotiation right from the start.
I smiled at him and simply drank a bit more of my tea. He is starting to look impatient and tense so I finally answered though not directly but in a storytelling way instead.
I started with how I met a certain mystique male enslaved in a place of debauchery several months ago by chance. I helped that male get his freedom because he wanted to go home desperately. In exchange for my help, I took something from his body without his knowledge.
As my story went on, the King Cynfael slowly realized that the man I was pertaining to in my story was indeed his son. He immediately made a follow-up question which I think was the one that he wanted to ask me from the start, "My son found out about the existence of a child between him and an unknown woman. Is that woman you by any chance?"
He was staring at me intently, waiting for that well-awaited confirmation from me. I answered a curt, "Yes" to his question. I heard a sigh of relief from him at first but then his eyebrows furrowed as he must have realized that he and his son had no bargaining chip to get any rights to visit the child that is with me.
He cautiously asked me once again, "I want to ask in behalf of my son if it is possible to see the child once in a while? We won't fight for custody since we know our place but can you please give us at least that. He is my only son and that child is the only one to continue our bloodline."
