Chapter 6 - Light (2)
A sticky scent tickled the tip of his nose.
His decision to come out at this late hour was good.
The gloomy back alley fit very well as the background for an explicit scene.
To him, who enjoyed deviation, the outside was a space to faithfully fulfill his pleasure and instincts rather than a normal category.
Now, all that’s left is to rush in and take advantage of the place where screams have just stopped, after turning the corner approaching him.
Torturing the weakened ones and listening to their groans, or robbing them of their possessions and magic stones, or if there’s a pretty girl, satisfying his desires would also be quite a good harvest.
A high-tier awakened one.
For someone like him with such power, there was no other entertainment like this.
With the situation right in front of him that made him want to smile involuntarily, the man wrapped a glittering chain around his hand and calmly opened his eyes as he turned the corner.
And he encountered.
A girl.
Silver wavy long hair faintly shining in the moonlight between the dim alleyways.
Blue eyes that seemed to hold an indescribable power that could never be felt from a young child.
A sharp blue knife that further accentuated her dreamy atmosphere exuding such an aura.
His breathing quickened and his heart started to pound. Sweat poured like rain.
He shuddered unconsciously at this unknown force constricting his body.
“W-What the.”
The man faltered.
She wasn’t even looking this way. Rather, only he was staring directly at her.
Yet what is this pressure he felt?
The opponent is just a mere girl. The magical power emanating was just a little.
For him, who could count on one hand the number of times he had lost the upper hand in battles he had fought so far, this situation where his body was stiffening was utterly incomprehensible.
“F-Fuck.”
Why was he so shaken by this one kid, when he could just kill her and be done with it?
With a bit of frustration, he gripped the chain.
That’s when it happened.
The girl tilted her head down. Her twisted side hair fell slightly, and her deep blue eyes that were looking to the side turned towards him.
Their eyes met.
The girl smiled.
───Crackle!
A terrible noise and static struck the man’s ears. An unfathomable amount of magical power scattered and swallowed the area.
A bright red wave penetrated and invaded the walls.
Only then did he realize.
She had deliberately lowered her magical power to lure him in.
“F-Fuck!!”
The chain the man was holding shook vigorously. As he infused it with magical power, the dagger threaded at the end of the chain flashed.
“Heheh.”
A chilling laugh echoed through the space. A huge red sickle was swung and aimed at him. He raised the chain to meet the blade. With a metallic sound ringing out like lightning, light flashed at the point of collision.
The chain shattered helplessly and decomposed into dust.
Impossible. I had layered several builds on it.
The red sickle decomposed into countless droplets. Blades formed and took the shape of a long sword, flowing into the girl’s hand. The girl spun once in the air and swung the greatsword. The greatsword pierced through his chest and came out.
Terrible pain resonated in his brain and his legs gave out. Blood gushed out and a fishy scent decorated his body.
Magical power rippled and the numerous red blood drops filling the air condensed in two places. They took the shape of short swords and flashed. Light burst from the man’s body, who couldn’t regain his senses, creating a huge and thick barrier.
A pair of red machetes mercilessly cut through the barrier and rapidly slashed across the man’s abdomen at high speed. His skin was torn and his whole body turned pale blue.
Tinnitus pierced his ears and his vision shook. His brain rang and his body trembled. His screams filled the space and gradually faded away.
The man squeezed out his last strength and stretched out his arm. Purple magical power rippled and huge spikes protruded from all directions. The air shook and objects were destroyed.
The girl tore her own chest with one hand. Scars as if clawed by a beast were engraved and flashed.
At the severe noise, the man barely raised his gaze. Huge monstrous mouths were rushing towards him, swallowing everything on the ground. Wind and air currents were swept into the mouths, creating a storm.
The man stared at it blankly and fell to his knees.
The wind blew. His body was already caught in it.
───Crunch! Crack! Crunch!
Feeling the sticky lines connecting his entire body being forcibly torn apart, the man lost consciousness with a distant pain.
“The ending is always the same. They’re all busy running away. Both them and me.”
[ Aureli, something more is coming. ]
“It’s okay. I think I can hold on a bit longer.”
Leaving behind three corpses that no longer resembled human form, only one girl was shining her eyes filled with murderous intent.
“Miss Erica, we’ve received contact from the stakeout team.”
“Yes, let’s go right now.”
Among the expected areas, the factory district was correct.
Erica put on her favorite black uniform and went out the door.
Honestly, she wanted to wrap up the case about that girl within a few days and fill in the insufficient security in the outskirts. Although she had thrown herself into various cases in the Seoul area with the mindset of sacrificing herself, she thought it would be a good change of pace to start work in this area that felt somewhat less busy.
However, catching this girl was not as easy as she thought. To be precise, it would be correct to say it was taking longer. The fact that she committed murders and appeared on CCTV, then disappeared as if handling some indescribable power, made it very difficult to track her subsequent routes.
But that was all. Perhaps because she was still just a girl after all, the information obtained by the investigation team was that she acted in a straight line from an area in Yangpyeong, Gyeonggi-do, causing incidents centered around desolate downtown areas where people don’t walk around, which was easy to predict. Thanks to this, they were able to considerably narrow down the range to deploy stakeout teams.
Whether such behavior of the girl was due to her thinking she could stand against the Association without knowing anything, or if it was an incomprehensible psychology like the psychopathic awakened ones sometimes seen, was unclear.
But that wasn’t particularly important to Erica.
For non-awakened or ordinary low-level awakened ones, a high-tier awakened one committing crimes could be considered a dangerous incident. However, criminals of that level were merely something that veteran hunters of the Association could handle with a reasonable amount of time.
If there was one concern, it was that if she turned out to be an undetected special awakened one, they might need to conduct a more thorough investigation.
Unlike the usual Erica who didn’t exclude even a sliver of possibility, the reason she stepped into this case a bit more roughly wasn’t for any grand reason.
Help the good, punish the evil.
It wasn’t a grand ambition, just a single principle she had kept since after the incident.
Around the time she decided to move only her workplace to the Gyeonggi area while keeping her department the same, that girl on the monitor caught her eye. Committing murder without showing any emotion, rather seeming to enjoy the situation itself.
How could she pretend not to see such a sight?
Without killing such a garbage human.
“We’ll arrive soon.”
“Okay.”
In the car decorated with luxurious colors, Erica looked outside. The sun had long set and a pitch-black sky was visible.
She saw flickering streetlights and buildings broken here and there.
“Field Team 7 is searching. We’re approaching Section 1. What should we do?”
“Deploy them.”
At Erica’s words, the agent sitting in the driver’s seat used the device in his ear to relay the content.
Even though it was called a team, it was only 5 people. This Field Team 7 was the hastily formed team because this case was taking much longer than expected.
It was a team that combined veteran hunters who could continuously hold onto that girl remaining at the almost finished crime scene, and members from Field Team 1 to ensure safety.
Since they also sent measuring devices, there shouldn’t be any problem with the stakeout team tracking the girl before the field team entered.
The car arrived at the factory district and Erica got out of the back seat. She felt the cool wind piercing her skin.
Soon she would be able to meet the vicious girl who had troubled her for a week.
Suppressing her boiling anger, she took a few deep breaths and composed herself.
She put the device in her ear and started walking. With crackling static, she heard the sound of clothes rustling.
A deep male voice came through the device.
[ Seems like we’ve gotten a clear shot, Erica. We’re going in. ]
“Confirmed, I’ll follow. Let me know if anything happens.”
[ Will do. ]
Did that person always talk like that? Even when rolling around in the field, he used to brush off the city being crushed and victims pouring out as if it was no big deal.
Is he making a fuss because it’s been a while since a joint operation?
She moved her feet while inhaling the acrid air. The night air felt especially cool today.
That’s when the anomaly occurred.
───Crackle, crackle!
[ F-Fuck what’s tha····! This····! ]
“Riche? Riche, can you hear me?”
[ Eri····! He····! ]
Mixed with noise and static, the communication device in her ear wasn’t functioning properly.
Was the radio wave being interfered with? But other devices are fine····?
Erica quickly assessed the situation while running to the checking point set for the operation. Something must have happened.
She crossed dark alleys and passed several walls. She shifted her view while scanning several large visible buildings with a bit of magical power.
On the quiet street, only the sound of her footsteps echoed cleanly. Dark and bright areas alternately appeared, illuminating her.
Her brows furrowed and the tip of her nose reddened.
She felt dense magical power.
───Crackle!
Only then did one typical example of the malfunction conditions for communication devices containing magic stones come to mind.
The presence of abnormally massive magical power.
“Haah····. Haah····.”
She hurriedly moved towards where the lingering sound was coming from. Her vision turned red and her breathing became rough.
Only after passing the checking point did she hear voices that seemed to be cut off.
Kuhek····! Huk····!
This····! Sen····!
Now the presence of massive magical power could be felt to a degree that anyone could recognize.
She entered a wide alley. Anxiety swept over her. She leaned against the wall and turned the corner. She widened her view.
It was a sea of blood.
Walls and cement filled with red decorations that made her want to retch, scattered corpses and her team sitting down unable to breathe properly.
One colleague gasping while suspended in the air with his neck grabbed by the girl exuding a dark red presence.
In that place that no longer resembled any aspect of a city, a few strands of life were flickering like candles in the wind.
“Riche!!!”
Erica shouted and stretched her arm back at the same time. Blue currents gathered in the air and seeped into her hand. Magical power was contained and grasped in the shape of a huge spear.
The wind blew and air gathered. She held her breath and stretched out her arm as it was.
The spear filled with magical power raced through space. A blue stream of water swirled and extended to one point.
The girl let go of the man in her hand and took a step back. The spear helplessly passed by the girl and hit the back wall, disappearing.
Murderous blue eyes shone faintly.
“Hello.”
The girl smiled.
