Chapter 40: Game Chamber I
A few minutes had passed since Alex asked Ana to bring Sheldon and the others. He was checking data in the background, and massive data flowed across a projection.
[Sir, they're here.]
Hearing Ana's voice, Alex waved his hand, making the projection vanish. He walked to the door to greet them.
"What are you doing? Why did you bring us here?"
Missy entered holding a bag of chips and a large cup in her hands. Then Mia, Sheldon, Tam, and Billy walked in, each carrying some snacks.
"How about we play a game?"
Alex said, finding it a little funny to see everyone loaded with snacks.
"What kind of game?"
Tam asked, curious. He hadn't seen anything in the room and wondered what Alex was up to in an empty space.
"It's a new game I made. It's not in this room," Alex replied and showed them the way.
"Follow me."
After saying that, Alex walked ahead and everyone followed silently.
As Alex led them deeper inside, they realized the place was actually quite large. After passing through several rooms, Alex stopped in front of a glass door and looked at everyone.
When Sheldon and the others saw Alex pause in front of the glass door, they peered inside through the transparent surface.
"What are those big things?" Billy asked.
"Yeah, what is that? Looks kind of like a hibernation chamber," Tam commented.
Everyone noticed several large objects arranged in specific positions in the room—they looked like iron coffins to the untrained eye.
"Close enough. It's a game chamber," Alex said with a smile.
Sheldon furrowed his brows but didn't say anything. It was Mia who asked, puzzled: "Game chamber? How does it work?"
"Yeah, what does that have to do with games?" Missy didn't get it either.
"Simply put, your consciousness will enter a virtual game. Like being sent to another world."
Alex tried to explain in the simplest way possible so that Mia, Missy, and maybe Billy could grasp the idea.
"Wait... you're saying you can send our consciousness into a computer?"
Tam was in disbelief. For him, this kind of thing was pure fantasy.
"That's impossible, even though the idea is amazing," Sheldon said, dismissing it.
"Seriously? How about trying it before you say anything?"
Alex replied with a knowing smile—he'd expected this reaction.
"I want to try!" Missy jumped, excited by the idea of doing something incredible.
"No thanks,"
Sheldon declined. But looking at Alex's confident face, he couldn't help but wonder if it was actually possible.
"I trust Alex. If he says it's possible, then it must be," Mia said. Alex gave Mia a confident smile in response.
"I want to try too," Billy added.
"I'm fine with it,"
Tam said after thinking for a moment. Everything he'd seen so far was already unusual. Entering a virtual world didn't seem that far-fetched anymore.
"Alright, only Sheldon doesn't want to play."
"Let's go. Before entering the game chamber, you'll need to put on a special suit."
Alex led everyone to a changing area. To his surprise, Sheldon changed his mind.
The suits they had to wear were tight, similar to diving gear. Alex had made them in various colors and sizes. With Ana's help, it was easy to find the right size for everyone. Alex wore a black suit. Sheldon's was blue. Tam chose a silver one, and Billy picked red.
Sheldon was surprised—he expected the outfit to be uncomfortable, but it was actually very comfortable.
Alex had created separate male and female dressing rooms. When he came out with the boys, Mia and Missy weren't there yet. They must still be changing, Alex thought.
"What now?" Tam asked, visibly excited.
"Is this safe?"
Sheldon asked nervously, his eyes constantly locked on the huge game chambers in the distance.
"We're waiting for the girls. And yes, it's perfectly safe—I wouldn't be here if it wasn't," Alex reassured.
"Have you tested it before?" Tam asked.
"Of course. You think I'd let others use it if it were dangerous?" Alex replied confidently.
"Who knows?" Sheldon muttered.
Before Alex could respond, he saw Mia and Missy come out of the changing room. Missy wore a pink suit and Mia wore black.
"Alex and Mia, you guys are matching," Missy said teasingly. "Missy..." Mia got embarrassed—her friend loved teasing her.
Alex didn't mind and was just happy that everyone was together. He appreciated that.
"Since everyone is here, pick a game chamber to enter."
After saying that, he walked toward a black game chamber. Unlike the suits, the game chambers only came in black and white.
Noticing this, everyone walked over to the chamber of their choice. Mia and Missy picked chambers near Alex. Sheldon, Tam, and Billy also selected nearby chambers. Once everyone had made their choice, Alex said:
"Okay, Ana will explain how everything works."
