Chapter 9: 9-Aiming for the Top!
---
Su Mo's brows furrowed slightly. From now until the college entrance exams, there were just six and a half days left.
With his current strength, he could already match silver-tier powerhouses. A few more instance runs, and the top spot would be within reach.
But that was just him—what about everyone else?
Was this so-called "fairest" exam really fair?
Old Man Wang chuckled lightly. "Are you thinking this exam format isn't fair to the other students?"
Su Mo nodded silently.
"The moment you step into the college entrance exams, you've already entered society—and society has never been fair.
Haven't you ever wondered why the top 10 in the exams are always silver-tier, even though you only get awakened 10 days before?
Do you really think someone can grind from level 1 to over 40 in just 10 days?"
Su Mo frowned. "If that's the case, then why even have us regular students take the exam? Just to be stepping stones for those people?"
"No, no, you're overthinking it. The exams actually have two lists: one for the nation and the world to see, and another for the regular students' scores.
The academies actually prefer the second list—those students are unpolished gems, yet to be shaped.
But what I'm asking of you is to break into the national list and become the true, undisputed top scorer. Got the confidence?"
Su Mo nodded, leaving his Guandao behind as he walked out of the office under the gazes of the two Old Wangs.
After Su Mo left, Wang Defa finally couldn't hold back. "Do you really think he can take the national top spot? It's been how many years?"
"I think he's got the potential and the strength. At level 3, he can already injure a silver-tier. Give him a bit more, and the top spot isn't out of reach."
"The last time an ordinary student became the national champion was 50 years ago—Bai Zhanshen, right?"
"Yep. Maybe he's the next Bai Zhanshen!"
…
After leaving the office, Su Mo headed straight out of school. With the little money he had left, he bought some groceries and went home.
Opening the door, he glanced around—no sign of his sister. He set the groceries on the table and retreated to his room.
When he was 12, his parents went missing during an instance development project.
Over the years, he'd long since guessed their fate.
Su Mo had practically been raised by his older sister.
Sadly, she wasn't an awakener, so she'd stayed here to take care of him.
In a world teeming with awakeners, life for ordinary people was tough, and Su Mo's family lived frugally.
Thankfully, school was free and provided three meals a day, so Su Mo didn't burden the family much.
In his room, Su Mo mulled over how to level up as quickly as possible.
Each trip into the Goblin instance had a 12-hour cooldown.
To level up fast or farm attribute points, he'd need other instances.
But the city's Instance Hall charged steep entry fees for every run—fees his family couldn't afford unless he sold his two instance rewards.
Problem was, Teacher Wang had taken both of those.
No money, no instance access. The school instance was only available every 12 hours.
Even if he ran it daily until the exams, he'd hit level 10 at best—maybe not even that, since leveling got harder later on.
He was still confident he could take the top spot this year, but wasn't that just wasting time?
His gaze drifted to the window.
Maybe he could try the wild instances outside the city.
But leaving the city required at least level 5—or a level 7 escort.
Su Mo shook his head. Looked like he'd need to grab his weapon from Teacher Wang, hit level 5 fast, and head out to find wild instances!

The door opened, and a gentle-looking woman in her mid-20s spoke to Su Mo. "Xiao Mo, you're back again today? Out of money? How much do you need?"
Su Mo shook his head. "No, I just missed you, Sis, so I came to check in."
"You and your sweet talk. Alright, wait there—I'll cook!"
Watching Su Yu's retreating figure, Su Mo's heart calmed.
She was his only family. Seeing her was the only thing that settled him.
Soon, Su Mo looked at the hearty dinner on the table and his slightly weary sister, feeling a pang of guilt.
That night, they talked a lot—about the future, awakeners, college, and her urging him to find a girlfriend soon.
…
The next morning, Su Mo arrived early at Old Wang's office to pick up his weapon.
It was still a Guandao, but transformed.
The original was plain refined iron—unadorned, black all over except for a white edge.
Now, it was a different beast.
A golden dragon coiled around the dark handle. The 40-centimeter blade gleamed with a chilling light.
A crimson tassel flowed from where the handle met the blade.
Faint runes shimmered along the spine, adding mystery to its already imposing presence.
One glance, and Su Mo was hooked.
Wang Defa beamed with pride. "Well, kid? Pretty sweet, huh? Way better than that junk bronze crap you were swinging!"
Su Mo nodded. "Thanks, Teacher Wang!"
"Cut the chatter—try lifting it!"
Su Mo gripped the handle and heaved. The Guandao rose slowly.
Its weight felt perfect, filling him with glee.
With this, he was sure he could cleave the Goblin King in one strike!
If that silver-tier jerk from the trial hall tried anything again, one swing would leave him helpless.
Thanking Wang Defa, Su Mo took his new blade and headed back to the trial hall.
Along the way, everyone who saw him turned to stare.
What guy wouldn't want a weapon this cool?
Though the news of Su Mo soloing the Goblin instance hadn't fully spread, most awakeners had heard.
Even those who didn't know his face knew he wielded a Guandao.
Under countless envious and awed gazes, Su Mo returned to the trial hall.
Zhang Chen, the guardian who'd attacked him before, gave him a cold glare before turning away.
Su Mo ignored him. Silver-tier? After this instance run, that guy might not even be a match for him anymore.
With that thought, he activated the instance and stepped inside.
