Breaking into the hospital wasn't too difficult, given all the experience Butcher had behind him. Breaking in and sneaking into far more secure places was an experience that couldn't be forgotten in a couple of years. Which was true of M.M. as well. Finding a place that was off-limits to outsiders was even easier. Steal a pass from a nurse and enter a restricted area, that's all. The main thing was not to pretend that they didn't belong here, to buy time. And then leave as soon as possible, before the guards arrive.
- Just like old times, huh? - Billy grinned.
- You'd better shut up, it's... sickening," M.M. disagreed, feeling uneasy because of the bad vibes. It's always like this with Butcher, someone is bound to get hurt, and this time someone might get hurt too.
- All right, don't pussyfoot around. Let's take what we came for and get out of here," Billy frowned, looking around.
Just then, a baby came into view, inside a transparent incubator for newborns, hooked up to a drip of V. It was the only infant in the room, though considering there were five other incubators just like it, only empty, it wasn't the first to go through something like this. Looking at the blue liquid in the bag, Butcher estimated the amount of drug with shock. After all, even Cottonmouth was already losing his head from small doses of this stuff, and who can withstand such a ...
- They put this stuff into their veins... fuck, - Butcher described the situation succinctly, having seen where the tube goes.
At the same second the baby opened its eyes, shooting blue lasers upwards, causing the two men to look away in shock. Fortunately, it seems the incubator was made of much stronger material than usual, and was able to withstand a direct laser shot from the eyes.
- God made them, my arse. They stamp those cunts in the lab," Butcher spat out, looking at the baby in disgust.
- Butcher, let's take what we need and go, - M.M. distracted him from looking at the baby, so that this five-minute madman wouldn't think of strangling the child as if it were Hitler.
- All right, I'll be right there," Butcher looked around, finding syringes and a blood-testing container. - That'll do.
It took less than a minute, because they didn't need much, just less than half of the container where they'd collected the drug. This will easily prove Vaught's involvement in the creation of superhumans and illegal experiments to alter human DNA.
- That's it, let's get out of here," Butcher grinned, glaring at the kid.
- Hey! - shouted behind them, giving them a precious moment to find cover.
Machine gun shots and the sound of shattering glass rang out behind them as they barely had time to hide behind the column. Fortunately, the column was thick enough to prevent their bodies from being made into a sieve.
- Distract them," Butcher instructed, thinking of something. M-M nodded concentratingly and pulled out his gun and began firing at the guards. At that moment Billy was able to reach the cable and pull it out of its socket.
- Watch and learn," he said to his perplexed partner, showing the plug, then pulled it.
The incubator with the baby inside shortened the distance between them while the guards were in a second of confusion. Finally the incubator was behind a column and Butcher was able to get the baby out of there, holding it facing forward so that it wouldn't turn into a kebab himself. That was the fate he had prepared for the guards and with a cheeky grin he stepped into the light, preparing a surprise for them.
- What's next, William? "You gonna make him burp on me?" - Homelander asked with a smile on his lips as he stood surrounded by the knocked out guards.
- 'He's got a far better trick in store for you,' Butcher smiled very much, before shaking the infant. Blue rays straight from his eyes immediately reached the superhero's chest, powerlessly trying to burn through his figure. But to Billy's displeasure, the blond was only watching with interest.
- The kid's got a lot of potential. A fine replacement growing up... if she doesn't get badly influenced," Homelander smiled kindly, stroking the cheek of the infant who was staring at the man in front of him in amazement. He grinned, glancing at the muzzle of the gun M-M had pointed at him. - Would you put the kid back where he belonged already?
Butcher's eyes narrowed, and he stared unblinkingly into the blond's eyes for a long minute. He smiled the same way, showing no irritation at the long wait. Finally Billy nodded, and carried the little girl back himself.
- What's next? - M-M's hand tightened on his gun, pressing his lips together. It was clear that the forces were not evenly matched, and firearms were no help.
- We'll have to change the suit," sighed Homelander, looking at the burned suit.
- Oh, we're sorry," Butcher replied sarcastically, looking into the super's eyes.
- You know, yesterday I thought you were scared. That you were terrified of my appearance and that it made your heart ready to burst out of your chest. But now. now I see that it's not fear. No, it's rage and a desire to tear me to shreds. How... unusual," the blond smiled, his eyes glowing red.
- Come on, cunt," Billy smiled wickedly.
- Butcher? - M-Am said worriedly and uncertainly, not wanting to be cut by the Homelander's laser. And the laser light was only getting stronger, promising a quick but extremely painful death. Resigned to his fate, M-Am closed his eyes silently, his skin already feeling the heat. This was not how he had imagined his death.

As I returned to the festival, I noticed a figure far away from everyone else. And my vision could easily tell that the girl wasn't feeling her best. It seems sincerity was hard for a young girl who still depends on the opinion of the public. Smoothly he landed behind her, so that it could be heard. Starlight froze like a rabbit hearing a predator, but I hugged her from behind with a smile, pulling her close to me. Which the girl didn't mind at all.
- Bad performance? - I asked, gently stroking the girl's shoulders, causing her to relax slightly.
- I just... let my mum down badly," Annie exhaled, with an overflow of feelings. - Her friends were there, her acquaintances... and I said in front of everyone that I didn't believe in all that... nonsense," she turned round sharply, looking me in the eye. - Am I a horrible daughter? She's not going to die of a heart attack because she's ashamed of me, is she?
- I hope not," I smiled at her ridiculous joke. If it would make her feel better, why not? - How are you feeling?
- Surprisingly good, great," I smiled at her. - Thanks for your support.
- What else could I do? I couldn't leave such a beautiful girl in trouble.
- Don't flatter yourself, you weren't there," she pounded her fist on my chest.
- But I'm here now, Annie," I grinned, pulling her to me by the waist and looking into her tear-stained eyes.
The girl reached up and kissed me, not waiting for me to do anything about it. I savoured the moment, lowering my hands from her waist to her firm ass, squeezing her lower hemispheres in my palms. But it didn't go any further, unfortunately the moment wasn't the right one. I must admit that I am an amorous amateur, which relies more on natural data and a little experience of the past life. It wasn't a good idea to rely on Homelander's memory, given that he'd picked up everything from films and TV series on the subject, and that wasn't the best source.
Eventually, Starlight flew through the night sky with me for the first time. It could even be called a romantic moment, but given the doggy cold of the sky, it was nothing of the sort. By the end of the flight, the blonde could barely speak due to her teeth chattering. She was far more susceptible to low temperatures than Maeve, with whom the Homelander flew with all the time.
She accepted my apologies for the inconvenience of the flight, hugged me tightly (I suspect to keep me warm) and went home to her rented flat. I stayed outside, after a while heading towards the Vought Tower. But I didn't go inside right away, standing at the entrance where my gaze involuntarily caught on the statue of Soldier Boy.
He was pointing in the opposite direction of the tower, holding a Thompson submachine gun. He was dressed literally like a soldier, only with a mask on his face that did not hide it in any way. He died in eighty-second and was considered the strongest super, until Homelander came along. Funny thing is, he was already seventy at the time, but there had been no change in his appearance since his first appearance on the country's television screens.
He supposedly died saving the world from a nuclear disaster. But in this case I was extremely confused by the date of his death, or rather the year. The same year America's Favourite, America's Strongest and Greatest Superhero, and an absolute blank on the case - Homelander - was born. It's unclear exactly what WoW Soldier did to the company, but even if they could get rid of him... you just have to be careful.
With a snort, I flew upwards, heading for the exit of the city. I landed almost in the woods, right in front of the country house I'd recently bought. It wasn't exactly secluded from civilisation, but the noise of the never-sleeping city was inaudible, even to the ears of a Homelander. The perfect place to practice Ryan's abilities before actually moving to a quiet town where a house had already been purchased.
Still had to make sure the boy wouldn't hurt anyone by controlling himself. I didn't want things to develop in the scenario of a film I had watched back in a previous life. Like a boy with Superman's powers went crazy there and brutally started to kill all the offenders, starting from strangers and ending with his parents. I didn't want that kind of thing, I didn't want to wring the neck of my... son.
I grumbled unhappily at the not-so-pleasant thoughts, entered the house and headed for the bedroom, where I fell asleep, taking off the uncomfortable suit. I should get a good night's sleep, because I had a lot to do tomorrow, and a lot of it was due to my own actions. Big changes were coming, and this was just the beginning.
