Chapter 3: Truths between the lines
Chapter 3: Truths between the lines
The lights came back on suddenly, flooding the room as if the universe had decided to interrupt us at the most intense moment. My eyes widened, and I quickly stepped back, putting distance between myself and Haruna. The air conditioning resumed, sending a cool breeze that soothed my sweaty skin but failed to quell the heat burning on my face. My heart pounded fiercely, as if trying to break free from my chest.
—What the hell just happened? —I thought, bringing a hand to my face. I glanced at Haruna out of the corner of my eye and found her still sitting on the floor, breathing heavily, her face completely red. Her hands were clenched against her thighs, trembling slightly. When our eyes met, she immediately looked away, pressing her lips together tighter.
—T-Thank you for your help —she murmured in an almost inaudible voice, her words barely making it past her stammering.
I nodded awkwardly, trying to ignore the discomfort filling the air. —It was nothing... I just wanted to make sure you were okay. —My voice sounded dry, distant, as if I were trying to convince myself that all of this hadn't been a huge mistake.
We stayed silent for a moment, both of us trying to steady our breathing. My mind wouldn't stop tormenting me with questions. How had it come to this? She had a boyfriend, Kazuki. And I... what the hell was I doing? I felt filthy, like I had just betrayed whatever decency I had left.
After finishing dinner—though with an evident unease between us—we decided to go out. The cool night air hit my face, clearing my thoughts a bit. We walked in silence, and the night breeze seemed to be the only thing capable of breaking the tension that still lingered between us. Every step we took seemed to widen the emotional distance that had grown since that moment in the darkness.
I wanted to say something to lighten the mood, but I couldn't find the words. Finally, I decided to break the silence, though my choice of topic wasn't the best.
—Have you heard those rumors going around school about me? —I said suddenly, with a tone more serious than I intended. Haruna lifted her head slightly, surprised.
—Rumors? —she asked, tilting her head.
—Yeah... you know, what they say about me. That I go around stealing other guys' girlfriends. —I let out a bitter laugh, hoping my confession would scare her, make her realize she shouldn't be around me.
Haruna stayed quiet for a moment, as if processing my words. Finally, she spoke. —Is it true?
I tried to cut her off before she could continue. —That's why you should stop going to other men's houses. It's dangerous, Haruna. You could end up in a situation you can't get out of.
I expected her to look scared, angry—anything that would indicate my strategy had worked. But what I heard next nearly made my eyes pop out of their sockets.
—I don't care —she said in a soft but firm voice.
I stared at her, incredulous. —What do you mean you don't care?
Haruna stopped and looked me in the eyes, her cheeks flushed but with an expression of resolve I didn't expect from her. —I know you've changed. You're not the same person you used to be. And even though... even though others don't see it, I do.
I didn't know what to say. I was trapped between wanting to push her away and the inexplicable warmth I felt hearing those words.
—Besides... I wouldn't do this if you weren't the one asking me to —she continued, her gaze shifting to the ground. Her hands clutched the bag she carried, as if afraid to let it go. —I feel bad for leaving you alone.
I stared at her in silence, my thoughts swirling like a hurricane. Haruna was completely sincere, and that made all of this so much more complicated. Her words, her expression—everything about her seemed to break down the barriers I was trying to build.
I sighed deeply, running a hand through my hair in an attempt to calm myself. I glanced sideways at her, noticing how her cheeks were still flushed, and the determination I had seen in her eyes began to blend with nervousness.
—Haruna... —I murmured, not knowing exactly what to say.
She lifted her gaze slightly, but said nothing. The silence stretched on, and though we were still walking, it felt as if time had stopped. The night was calm, but inside me, everything was chaos.
Little by little, as we walked, the surroundings began to change. The streets looked better maintained, the trees perfectly trimmed, and the houses lining the road were impressive, with well-kept gardens and facades exuding wealth. The streetlights bathed the road in a warm, almost cozy glow, but inside me, the atmosphere remained somewhat uncomfortable. I knew we were getting closer to Haruna's house, and though I didn't want to admit it, I felt relieved. I needed time to clear my head.
Finally, we reached the entrance to her house. It was a place that screamed elegance: a dark wooden door with golden details, framed by white columns. The front garden was immaculate, with flowers perfectly arranged in symmetrical beds, and a stone path leading to the entrance. The exterior lights were on, giving the place a warm and inviting glow.
I stopped in front of the door, turning to Haruna. —Well, here we are. —I tried to sound casual, but my voice betrayed my discomfort.
Haruna lifted her head slightly, though she still avoided looking directly into my eyes. She seemed like she wanted to say something but didn't. Maybe she was just as confused as I was about what had happened earlier.
—See you tomorrow, Haruna. —I said with a small smile, waving as I turned to leave.
I had only taken a couple of steps when I heard her voice. —Ryota!
I stopped immediately and turned my head to look at her. Haruna stood there, her face illuminated by the lights of her house, her body still slightly hunched, but now she had a smile I hadn't expected to see.
—Tomorrow, I'll come to your house again. I'll cook dinner for you —she said with an unexpected firmness in her tone, though her cheeks had once again turned that characteristic shade of pink.
I blinked, confused by what I had just heard. Haruna's expression didn't waver; she was completely resolute. I let out a sigh, scratching the back of my neck in resignation.
—Did you not hear what I said earlier? —I replied, trying to sound serious. —I'm a bad influence, Haruna. You shouldn't keep coming to my house. It's not a place for you.
She was silent for a second, but instead of backing down, her smile widened slightly, carrying a hint of defiance I hadn't seen in her before.
—I don't care, Ryota. I... want to come.
Her words left me breathless. There was something disarming about the sincerity in her voice. I wasn't used to anyone insisting this way, especially after all I had tried to do to push her away. I lowered my gaze for a moment, trying to find a response, but there was nothing I could say to change her mind.
—Do whatever you want, then. —I finally answered, trying to sound neutral, though I knew there was no conviction in my words.
Haruna nodded, her face still flushed, but with that determination that seemed impossible to break. She said goodbye with a slight nod before entering her house, letting the door close softly behind her.
I stood there for a few seconds, staring at the imposing facade of her home. I sighed and finally turned around, starting my walk back. As I walked through the quiet streets, I couldn't stop thinking about Haruna and what she had said.
—What the hell am I doing? —I muttered to myself.
The night was cool, but my mind was trapped in a whirlwind of emotions. Haruna was an enigma I didn't know how to solve, and something told me this story was just beginning.
....
My heart was pounding so hard I could feel it echoing in my ears. I leaned against the front door, my back pressed against the cold wood as I tried to steady my breathing, still quick and erratic. I placed both hands over my chest, as if that could calm the wild thudding of my heart with every thought racing through my mind.
I was thinking about Ryota. His serious gaze, his occasional smile that seemed to melt any emotional walls I'd built, and the way he protected me at his apartment. My face began to burn as I remembered how close our lips had been—so close I could feel his breath against my skin. I shut my eyes tightly, trying to shake off those images.
—What's happening to me?! —I whispered, bringing my hands to my cheeks, which were as hot as fire.
Before I could sink further into my thoughts, a familiar voice coming from the kitchen broke the silence.
—Haruna! What's up with you, girl? Why are you so red?
My body tensed immediately, and my eyes flew open. I would recognize that voice anywhere. I pushed off the door and hurried toward the kitchen, my heart now racing for a completely different reason.
There she was, leaning against the counter with a can of beer in her hand, looking at me with that mischievous smile that was so quintessentially hers. It was Shizuka.
Her short blonde hair fell in perfectly messy strands, giving her that rebellious look I'd always envied. Her emerald eyes sparkled with a playful glint, and her flawless makeup accentuated her delicate yet bold features. She wore a fitted top that showed off her toned stomach and a short denim skirt that flaunted her long, shapely legs. Shizuka always had that air of confidence and nonchalance, as if nothing in the world could faze her.
—Shizuka! —I shouted before throwing myself into her arms for a tight hug.
I buried my face in her chest, letting her familiar scent—a mix of sweet perfume with a hint of alcohol—envelop me. It had always been like this with her. No matter how much time passed without seeing each other, Shizuka was a safe harbor I could always return to.
—Hey, hey! —Shizuka said, laughing as she hugged me back and gave me a couple of light pats on the back. —What's up with you, huh? Why so affectionate? Did something exciting happen?
I didn't answer right away; I just stayed there, soaking in the warmth of her embrace. Finally, I pulled back a little, though my hands still rested on her arms.
—Shizuka, you have no idea how happy I am to see you. —I said with a smile I couldn't hold back.
She looked at me curiously, raising an eyebrow as she took a sip of her beer. —Oh? And why's that? Did you have a bad day, or maybe... a good one?
My cheeks heated up again as I thought of Ryota, but I quickly shook my head, trying to change the subject. —Nothing like that. I just... didn't expect to see you here. When did you get here?
—A few hours ago. Your mom let me in before rushing off on another one of her trips. She told me to look after you, as usual. —Shizuka shrugged with that carefree attitude that was so characteristic of her. —Though I think I'm the one who needs looking after. —She raised her beer can with a cheeky grin.
I couldn't help but laugh. Shizuka always had that effect on me, making me feel lighter, as if all the day's worries disappeared in her presence.
—Seriously, Haruna, you look strange. —She added, leaning in slightly to get a closer look at me. —You're all flushed, like you've been up to something naughty.
—What?! —I exclaimed, taking a step back and waving my hands nervously. —It's nothing like that! Don't say weird things, Shizuka!
She burst out laughing, clearly enjoying my reaction. —Alright, alright, no need to explain. But now I really want to know what happened. Come on, tell me—is it a guy?
I felt my entire body tense, and my gaze instinctively dropped to the floor. Shizuka was like a human radar, always picking up on the things I wanted to keep hidden.
—It's nothing, really! —I insisted, though my voice wavered slightly.
—Uh-huh. —Shizuka gave me a look that made it clear she didn't believe a word I was saying. —Haruna, sweetie, I'm your best friend. You can tell me anything. And if it is a guy... well, you know I can go beat him up if he does anything bad to you.
I let out a small laugh at her comment, but deep down, my mind was still full of images of Ryota. Should I tell Shizuka what had happened? Could she help me make sense of this whirlwind of emotions I was feeling?
Before I could decide, Shizuka grabbed my hand and pulled me toward the living room. —Come on, spill it while we finish these beers. I'm not taking no for an answer!
I sighed, resigning myself to her persistence, but also feeling grateful to have someone like Shizuka in my life. I knew that, in the end, she would always be there to listen, even when things didn't make sense to me either.
Sitting on the couch next to Shizuka, I felt strangely light, as if the weight of emotions I had accumulated throughout the day was fading with every word I shared with her. With a can of beer in her hand, Shizuka listened attentively as I told her everything that had happened with Ryota: how he showed up at that crucial moment to save me from the abusers, the unexpected advice that changed my perspective, and the night at his place, where I saw him from a completely different angle.
—And then, after all that, I invited him to dinner... Well, actually, I ended up cooking for him. —I laughed a little, but my cheeks flushed as I remembered what almost happened between us.
Shizuka, who had been drinking quietly, suddenly widened her eyes in surprise before grinning mischievously. —Ah, I get it. The guy knows how to play his cards. How interesting! —She commented, taking another long sip of her beer.
—That's not it! —I replied quickly, bringing my hands to my face in an attempt to hide my embarrassment.
—Sure, sure, Haruna. —She said, leaning slightly toward me with that cheeky grin she was so known for. —Let me guess. You almost kissed him?
My lips parted, but no words came out. My silence was enough for Shizuka to burst into laughter, one of those laughs that fills the whole room and makes you feel both embarrassed and comfortable at the same time.
—Oh, come on, Haruna! I can't believe it. The shy, sweet Haruna is playing with fire. —She set the beer can down on the table and stood up, walking toward me with determined steps. Before I could react, she cupped my cheeks in her hands and began kissing me repeatedly on the face.
—Shizuka, stop! —I said through laughter, trying to push her away.
—I can't. —She responded with a smile while continuing to kiss me. —My sweet Haruna is growing up, and I'm so proud of you.
—Stop teasing me! —I exclaimed, trying to gently push her off.
But then, as if changing the tone completely, Shizuka stopped laughing and looked me in the eyes, her expression now more serious. —Haruna... What about Kazuki?
My smile faded, and I looked down. —I... told him I didn't want to talk to him for a while. It was after the way he treated Ryota.
Shizuka sighed and collapsed back onto the couch, now with a look of disdain. —Kazuki is useless, Haruna. He always has been. He's weak. He never confronts problems, and you end up carrying everything for him.
Those words hurt more than I expected. I looked down, fiddling with my fingers as I remembered all the times I'd felt alone in my relationship with Kazuki, carrying both his problems and mine.
—Don't say that. —I whispered, though my voice lacked conviction.
Shizuka stared at me and then shrugged. —Haruna, you know I'm right. That guy doesn't have what it takes to take care of you.
Silence fell between us, but I knew Shizuka wasn't done. She took another sip of her beer, and then, as if she'd had an epiphany, she smiled slyly.
—You know what, Haruna? I want to meet Ryota.
My eyes widened. —What?
—Yeah. I want to see if he's as interesting as he seems. —She leaned forward with a smile that made me nervous. —Plus, I want to know if he's strong... and if he's any good in bed.
—Shizuka! —I exclaimed, feeling my face instantly heat up.
—What? I'm just saying what you're too shy to admit. —She laughed as she finished her beer.
I tried to respond, but the words wouldn't come out. Finally, I stammered. —Y-Yo have a boyfriend, Shizuka. You can't do that.
She raised an eyebrow and looked at me with a challenging expression. —And you have a boyfriend too, Haruna. Or did you forget that you almost kissed Ryota?
I was left speechless. I looked down and played with the hem of my skirt, murmuring something I could barely hear myself. —Kazuki... doesn't interest me as much anymore. Now, I see him more like a friend.
Shizuka burst out laughing. —I knew it. —She said, setting the empty can on the table before standing up. Stumbling a little, she walked toward the door.
—Where are you going? —I asked, standing up with concern.
—Just going out for a bit. —She replied, opening the door and turning to face me. She blew me a kiss with a playful smile. —Think again about what you really want, Haruna. See you tomorrow.
And before I could stop her, Shizuka left, leaving me alone in the silence of the house. I collapsed back onto the couch, my mind filled with confusing thoughts and emotions I didn't know how to handle.
Sunk into the couch, my fingers traced invisible lines over the soft fabric of my t-shirt. My gaze drifted into the dim light of the room, while my thoughts wandered to Ryota. The image of his muscular body materialized in my mind—strong and protective. An involuntary smile curved my lips as I recalled the feeling of his skin against mine.
With each breath, my body felt lighter. The image of Ryota above me grew increasingly vivid. I could feel the warmth of his body, the strength of his arms around me, the intensity of his gaze. A shiver ran down my spine, and my nipples hardened at the thought.
—Mmm... just a little longer like this— I murmured to myself, squeezing my eyes shut. My fingers slowly glided down my abdomen, following the curve of my hips. I imagined Ryota whispering sweet words in my ear as his hands explored every inch of my body.
My breathing quickened, and my heart pounded in my chest. I felt so alive, so connected to my desires. But suddenly, a wave of shame washed over me. I opened my eyes abruptly and sat up on the couch, pulling my hands away from my body.
—What on earth am I thinking?!— I exclaimed, covering my face with my hands. A nervous smile spread across my lips as I tried to steady my racing thoughts. —How could I even think of something like that?
I got up from the couch and began pacing the room, trying to clear my mind. The image of Ryota lingered in my head, but now I felt embarrassed and confused. What was happening? Why was I thinking about him like that?
I walked to the mirror and stared at my reflection. My cheeks were flushed, and my eyes sparkled with unusual intensity. I realized I had never felt this way about anyone before.
With a deep sigh, I tried to force my thoughts elsewhere. But it was impossible. The image of Ryota kept haunting me. And though I felt guilty and ashamed, I also felt aroused.
I wondered if I would ever have the chance to tell Ryota how I felt. But I quickly dismissed the idea. It was too soon, too risky.
With a resigned sigh, I collapsed onto the bed and closed my eyes. Tomorrow would be another day.
....
When I dropped Haruna off at her house, silence became my only companion. Only the distant sounds of cars and crickets filled the air as I walked toward my apartment. The night wind brushed against my face, but it couldn't clear my mind. There was something about Haruna's warmth, her shy smile, and her bright eyes that left an uncomfortable emptiness when I walked away.
—Damn it... —I muttered as I lit a cigarette—. I can't be thinking these things about Haruna. She has a boyfriend, Ryota, a boyfriend.
But the feeling of her closeness, the weight of her head on my chest, and the way she had murmured my name kept invading my thoughts.
—That girl is crazy —I whispered, trying to convince myself—. But... does she really want to come back tomorrow?
I let out a long sigh, extinguishing the cigarette with my foot before entering my apartment. As soon as I shut the door, a familiar laugh echoed in my head, light and mocking, as if someone was enjoying my discomfort.
—Amaterasu? —I asked, crossing my arms—. What the hell is so funny?
—Oh, Ryota! —the Goddess's voice replied, brimming with amusement—. That little show just now was simply wonderful. Your heart racing like mad, that girl's face so close to yours... it almost felt like fate was playing its cards.
—Fate? —I scoffed sarcastically, looking up at the ceiling as if I could see her—. Sure, because nothing screams "fate" like almost kissing another guy's girlfriend.
—Oh, don't be so hard on yourself. —Her tone was playful, as if she delighted in my frustration—. That girl clearly feels something for you. Didn't you notice?
—That doesn't matter. —My voice was firm, though a trace of doubt lingered in my chest—. She has a boyfriend. I'm not going to be the idiot who gets in the way. I've caused enough trouble in the past.
Amaterasu let out a soft, almost mocking giggle.
—Ah, Ryota, always so noble and stubborn. But tell me, do you really think that relationship will last? Haruna is like a flower searching for light, and you... well, you're the sun in her life now.
—What kind of cheap metaphor is that? —I growled, rubbing my temples—. Look, I don't know what you're planning, but don't drag me into your games. I already have enough on my plate trying to keep my own life in order.
—Oh, Ryota, dear, you don't need to worry. I'm just observing and enjoying the show. But, to be honest... I think this story is just beginning.
Before I could respond, her laughter faded away, leaving an annoying echo in my head.
I dropped onto the couch, running a hand through my hair.
—Damn it... what do you really want from me, Amaterasu?
Silence filled the room again, but this time, it felt different. Heavy. Unsettling. As if a shadow was forming on the horizon, one that would change everything I thought I knew.
As I tried to drown out my thoughts and find some peace in the silence, a series of insistent knocks at the door shattered my tranquility. I huffed, irritated. Who could it be at this hour?
—Who the hell is it? —I asked in a serious, dry tone, not bothering to hide my annoyance.
When I opened the door, the figure standing on the other side left me completely bewildered. A woman with short blonde hair, emerald-green eyes, and a bold air that hadn't changed a bit over the years. It was Shizuka. Her outfit was daring, as always: short shorts, a light jacket over a tight top. And, of course, her signature playful smile was there too.
The memories came rushing back like a cold wind. Shizuka... I met her in a different time, when Ryoka was still in charge. She had been one of his "conquests." He lured her in easily, taking advantage of her vulnerability. But what disgusted me most was that even after she got a boyfriend, she kept coming back to him for comfort... and something more. It was a toxic cycle Ryoka had fed without hesitation.
My jaw tightened at the memory, but the strong smell of alcohol brought me back to the present.
—Have you been drinking? —I asked in a firm, almost parental tone as I examined her closely.
Shizuka grinned shamelessly, raising a finger as if she were a student being scolded.
—Maybe just a little —she replied, slurring her words slightly before gently pushing past me to enter as though the place were hers.
I shut the door, watching her with a mix of incredulity and annoyance. She swayed slightly but still carried that carefree and provocative attitude she always used as a shield.
—Wow, Ryota, I'm impressed. —Shizuka spun on her heels, looking around the apartment with a critical gaze—. This place is... clean? I never thought you knew what a cleaning rag was.
—I'm not in the mood for your comments, Shizuka —I replied, crossing my arms—. What are you doing here?
She completely ignored my question, dropping onto the couch as if it were her favorite spot in the world.
—Oh, come on, don't be so cold to me —she said teasingly as she stretched, letting her jacket slide slightly off her shoulders—. What's wrong with me visiting my dear Ryota? Besides... —she leaned forward with a sly smile—. I missed seeing you.
I rolled my eyes, but before I could respond, Shizuka suddenly jumped up and, to my surprise, got dangerously close. Before I could step back, she trapped me in a firm hug, pressing my head against her chest.
—Come on, relax! —she said with a laugh, stroking my hair like I was a little kid—. You're always so serious.
—Hey, cut it out! —I exclaimed, feeling heat rush to my face.
I quickly pushed her away, taking a step back while avoiding her gaze.
—What the hell is wrong with you? You have a boyfriend, Shizuka.
She raised an eyebrow, tilting her head with that mischievous expression I knew all too well.
—And what does that have to do with anything? I'm just saying hi to my old friend. Besides... —her voice turned into a playful whisper—. You don't seem that upset about this.
—You're not thinking clearly. —I pointed at her, trying to keep a firm tone—. You've had too much to drink. You should go home before you do something you'll regret.
For a moment, I thought my words might get through to her, but Shizuka just smiled and dropped back onto the couch, stretching her arms like she didn't have a single care in the world.
—You know what? —she said, closing her eyes—. I think I'll stay here for a while. I need a break from everything... and everyone.
I sighed, rubbing my temples. Talking to Shizuka was like trying to reason with the wind: unpredictable and frustrating. But I knew that pressing the issue would only make things worse.
—Fine, but don't get comfortable. I'm not putting up with your nonsense this time.
She laughed softly, opening one eye to look at me with that spark of amusement that never seemed to fade.
—Oh, Ryota... that's why you've always been my favorite.
I said nothing more. I just headed to the kitchen, trying to ignore the weight of her presence in my small apartment. I knew tonight was going to be longer than I expected.
As Shizuka remained sprawled on the couch, swinging her legs back and forth, her playful voice broke the silence.
—Come on, Ryota, come over here. Why don't you relax a little with me? —she said, stretching her arms toward me with a mischievous grin—. Maybe, if you're good, I'll even do you a few favors... you know, like the old days.
I sighed, feeling the weight of the conversation before responding calmly:
—Shizuka, if you're planning on drinking or causing trouble, forget it. I already threw out all the beer cans I had.
Immediately, Shizuka sat up on the couch, her emerald eyes shining with disbelief.
—You did WHAT?! —she exclaimed dramatically, crossing her arms and pouting exaggeratedly—. Who gave you the right to decide that?
—It's my house, in case you forgot. —I shot her a tired look, leaning against the doorframe.
She huffed as if genuinely offended, but before she could continue protesting, her expression shifted. Her tone turned curious as she asked:
—Hey, speaking of my stuff... where are the clothes I left here last time? You know, my designer pieces?
My expression turned into a mocking smile as I crossed my arms.
—Oh, that... —I paused dramatically, savoring the anticipation on her face—. I threw those out too.
Shizuka froze, her jaw literally dropping.
—WHAT?! —she shouted, jumping to her feet and rushing toward me. She started hitting my chest lightly with her closed fists, though they were nothing more than soft taps—. Ryota! How could you do that?! That stuff cost me a fortune. It was designer!
—I wasn't about to let someone leave such vulgar clothes in my house. —I shrugged, feigning indifference as I looked at her with a half-smile.
—Vulgar, my ass! —she shouted, stepping back only to point an accusing finger at me—. Do you know how hard I worked to get those pieces? You've gone too far!
I watched her calmly, waiting for her to settle down a bit before replying:
—I had a guest over, Shizuka. And I wasn't about to let something so... inappropriate be out in plain sight.
Suddenly, the mischievous glint in her eyes grew sharper, and a sly smile spread across her lips.
—A guest? —she repeated, drawing out the word as she crossed her arms—. Well, well, Ryota. Who's this new girl? What kind of "guest" brings some excitement to your boring life?
I frowned, deciding not to elaborate.
—That's none of your business. And stop being so nosy.
—Oh, come on. —Shizuka leaned toward me, poking a finger into my chest while grinning like she'd uncovered some juicy secret—. Is she cute? Do you like her? Because if you do, you have to tell me everything.
I gently pushed her back, keeping a firm tone.
—That's enough, Shizuka. This is my house, my rules. If you plan on continuing with your jokes or prying questions, you can leave the same way you came in.
She stepped back, pretending to be offended, but her smile didn't waver for a second.
—Wow, so serious all of a sudden. —She laughed as she flopped back onto the couch—. But fine, Ryota. I won't say any more... for now.
I watched her for a few seconds, waiting to see if she would actually calm down. Dealing with Shizuka was exhausting, but something about her mischievous, uninhibited nature always managed to get under my skin.
As I watched Shizuka lying on the couch, I glanced at the time on my phone. It was late, and I silently thanked myself for having taken Haruna home earlier before the day got any more complicated. I sighed, trying to clear my mind of the thoughts revolving around her. However, I was pulled out of my musings by Shizuka's voice.
—I'm exhausted, —she said, stretching her arms above her head and yawning loudly—. I had to deal with some idiots today who just wouldn't leave me alone.
I raised an eyebrow and looked at her with mild skepticism. I knew her personality all too well and the kind of situations she tended to get herself into.
—And what happened this time? —I asked, returning my gaze to my phone.
—The usual. Some guys who don't know when to quit. —Shizuka shrugged, as if it were no big deal—. I had to threaten to scream to get them to back off.
I let out a sigh as I headed to the kitchen, opening a couple of drawers in search of something.
—Shizuka, you know you always attract trouble with that attitude of yours.
—What? Are you blaming me now? —she replied with an offended tone, watching me from the couch—. It's not my fault they can't resist this amazing package. —She gestured to herself dramatically, pairing it with a mischievous grin.
Ignoring her comment, I pulled out a small pot, poured some milk into it, and turned on the stove. I could hear her from the living room, continuing her complaints.
—Besides, what do you expect me to do? Cover myself from head to toe? That's not my style, Ryota.
—It's not that, but you could avoid getting into such unnecessary situations. —I raised my voice slightly from the kitchen, making sure she could hear me.
She let out a soft laugh.
—Unnecessary? Please. If those guys can't control themselves, that's their problem, not mine.
Finally, with the milk warmed and poured into a glass, I returned to the living room and handed it to her.
—Here, drink this, —I said, trying to keep a neutral tone—. It'll help you calm down a bit.
Shizuka looked at the glass with curiosity and then at me, her eyes filled with disbelief before she burst into laughter.
—Warm milk? Seriously, Ryota? What am I, a little kid?
I sighed in resignation, placing the glass on the table beside her.
—I'm not asking if you want it or not. Drink it. It'll do you good.
—Are you turning into a dad or something? —she teased, crossing her legs as she eyed the glass with a mocking smile.
—Don't make me repeat myself, Shizuka. —I shot her a serious look, though my tone held a hint of patience—. If you want to keep living this reckless life, fine. But at least take care of your health.
She rolled her eyes, but in the end, she picked up the glass and took a sip. She drank quickly, and though she tried not to show it, I caught a glimpse of satisfaction on her face.
I smiled faintly as I returned to the kitchen, beginning to put away some ingredients Haruna had brought earlier. Every time I opened the fridge, the small details she had left there reminded me of her presence. That girl... always so thoughtful.
As I organized everything, I heard the sound of Shizuka setting the glass down on the table.
—Alright, Ryota. You're right. This isn't so bad after all. —Her voice carried a note of resignation but also a playful tone.
—See? —I called back from the kitchen—. Sometimes listening doesn't kill you.
She chuckled softly, and the atmosphere completely relaxed, if only for a few moments.
After putting away the last of the ingredients in the fridge and cleaning the countertop, I dried my hands with a towel and headed to the living room. There, I found Shizuka fast asleep on the couch, her hair messy and a peaceful expression on her face. She looked so carefree, as if the world didn't weigh on her at all.
I smiled softly as I approached and, unable to help myself, murmured under my breath:
—How can you fall asleep so quickly...?
I tried to wake her, gently shaking her shoulder.
—Shizuka, wake up. You can't stay here all night.
She only mumbled something unintelligible, turning slightly, as if my effort was completely futile. I sighed, letting out a quiet chuckle at the situation.
—You're impossible.
Carefully, I picked her up in my arms, carrying her like a princess. She was light, but even so, I made sure to move gently. As I walked toward my bedroom, Shizuka barely opened her eyes and, with a sleepy smile, murmured:
—Ah, Ryota... I'm too tired to play with you right now. But if you wait until tomorrow... —She trailed off, a playful smirk on her lips even in her drowsiness.
I sighed, shaking my head as I scolded her softly.
—Shizuka, how many times do I have to tell you that not everything revolves around your jokes? I just want you to rest. Stop saying nonsense.
She laughed faintly, her voice barely audible.
—You're so serious... always so... fatherly...
Finally, we reached my bedroom. I carefully laid Shizuka on the bed, making sure not to wake her completely. Her head sank into the pillow, and she instantly settled in as though the bed were the most comfortable place in the world.
—I'll sleep on the couch. Rest, alright? —I said firmly as I started to leave.
Shizuka opened one eye and, with a teasing smile, replied:
—Why don't you stay? The bed's big enough for both of us. I don't bite... much.
I froze mid-step, turning to look at her in disbelief.
—Do you ever stop with your jokes? Shizuka, just sleep. That's all you need to do.
She let out a soft laugh, rolling over to look at me with a mischievous glint in her eyes.
—Alright, Dad. Whatever you say.
I rolled my eyes but couldn't help letting out a small chuckle as I walked out of the room.
—Goodnight, Shizuka.
I closed the door behind me and returned to the living room, where I started tidying up the few things left out of place. After picking up some items and ensuring everything was in order, I finally collapsed onto the couch.
I felt drained, both physically and mentally. I closed my eyes for a moment, trying to clear my mind, but the thoughts began to pile up. I thought about Haruna, her words, her gaze. Then Shizuka and her constant energy, always finding ways to fill the silence with her jokes.
Eventually, exhaustion overtook me. My thoughts faded away, and slowly, I drifted into a deep sleep.
....
The neighborhood where Ryota lived was the complete opposite of what I was used to. The streets were dirty, some windows in the surrounding buildings were broken, and the constant noise of voices and old engines filled the air. The atmosphere was unsettling, but that wasn't what disturbed me the most. What truly unsettled me was questioning why I had come here.
My heart was pounding as I looked at the building where I knew he lived. "Why am I here?" I asked myself silently, hugging my arms to calm my nerves. The answer was clear in my mind, though I refused to admit it. I thought about what had happened the night before, how I had felt when his arms protected me, how our eyes had met in that moment...
—What am I doing?! —I muttered, bringing my hands to my face in a futile attempt to hide the blush spreading across my cheeks.
My thoughts wouldn't leave me alone, each memory of that night playing on repeat like an endless echo in my head. I shut my eyes tightly, trying to clear my mind, but all I managed to do was feel the warmth even more intensely as I thought about Ryota.
Then, the sound of a door opening broke through my daze. I opened my eyes and looked up at Ryota's apartment. I wanted to call his name, to call out to him, but the words died in my throat the moment I saw him.
There he was, but he wasn't alone.
My heart seemed to stop instantly. Shizuka was with him, clinging to his arm with a confidence and closeness that left me completely frozen. She was laughing, leaning into him as if the entire world belonged to them. For a second, I couldn't process what I was seeing.
And then, I remembered his words from the night before:
"Yeah... you know what they say about me. That I'm always stealing other guys' girlfriends."
Those words echoed in my mind with an overwhelming weight. My hands clenched into fists, and I felt the air leave my lungs. I didn't want to understand what it meant. I didn't want to accept the possibility that those words were true, but the scene before me made it impossible to ignore.
—No... —I whispered, stepping back as my vision began to blur.
My eyes burned, but I refused to cry. Not here, not now. I had to leave before anyone noticed me, before... before Ryota saw me. I couldn't bear the thought of facing him in this moment, not with the image of Shizuka clinging to him burned into my mind.
Without a second thought, I turned and started running. The tears threatened to fall, but I held them back with all my strength. My heart ached, and every step I took felt heavier than the last.
"Why did I come here?" I repeated to myself over and over, but I no longer wanted to find the answer. I just wanted to get away, to forget what I had seen, to forget how I felt... to forget Ryota.
But deep down, I knew it wouldn't be that easy.
...
The cold morning air barely seemed to affect me as I wandered aimlessly. My mind was trapped in a whirlwind of emotions, unable to escape the scene I had witnessed moments earlier. Over and over, I saw Shizuka clinging to Ryota's arm, laughing with that carefree air that defined her. Now I understood everything. She already knew him. That explained why she had left my house so early, why she seemed so eager to know more about him.
My chest ached as if someone had driven a thorn into my heart. Every step I took felt heavy, and my thoughts wrapped me in a darkness I couldn't shake.
—It hurts... —I murmured without realizing it, placing a hand over the unbearable weight in my chest.
Suddenly, someone called my name. At first, I didn't react, too lost in my own misery. But a firm grip on my shoulder snapped me back to reality. Turning around, I found Kazuki.
—Haruna! —he exclaimed, wearing his usual smile—. Are you okay? I've been calling you. What were you up to yesterday?
I opened my mouth to answer, but my voice faltered when I felt his grip on my shoulder tighten slightly. The warmth of his greeting faded, replaced by an uneasiness that made me shiver.
—Kazuki, I... —I tried to say something, but my words failed me.
Lowering my gaze, unable to meet his, I stepped back abruptly. My heart was racing, not with excitement, but with a growing sense of panic.
—Sorry, I have to go. I'll be late for work —I said nervously before turning away and walking quickly.
Kazuki called after me, his voice filled with confusion, but before I could respond, someone else appeared.
—Haruna! —Ryota's voice cut through the air, and before I could react, I felt his hand on my shoulder, pulling me toward him in one swift, confident motion.
My face ended up dangerously close to his, close enough to feel his breath against my skin. His embrace was warm, far more than I had expected, and his touch conveyed a mix of firmness and care that made my cheeks flush instantly.
—What are you doing? —he scolded gently, almost like a parent—. Look ahead when you're walking.
At that moment, a car sped past where I had been just seconds before. The sound of its engine roaring through the air left me frozen. Only then did I realize Ryota had saved me from a real danger.
—If you hadn't stopped me... —I murmured, still in shock.
But Ryota interrupted my thoughts, placing his hand gently on my head. He stroked my hair with a tenderness that felt almost like he was soothing a child.
—Good thing you're okay —he said with a small smile that took my breath away—. Be more careful next time, alright?
I nodded, still unable to form a coherent sentence, as he withdrew his hand and resumed walking.
—By the way —he said, glancing back at me slightly—, you mentioned you got me a spot at that animal shelter you work at. Could you show me the way?
At first, his words caught me off guard, but then I remembered our conversation from a few days ago. A smile spread across my face as I nodded enthusiastically.
—Of course! Come on, it's this way —I said, starting to walk alongside him.
As we walked, the world around us seemed to fade away. I focused on Ryota, completely ignoring Kazuki, who was still watching us from a distance. His expression was hard to read, but at that moment, I didn't care.
All that mattered was that, for a brief moment, I was walking next to Ryota, as if everything in the world was just right.
....
As I walked alongside Haruna, I couldn't help but feel Kazuki's gaze burning into my back. It was intense, almost dark, as if he were evaluating me, questioning me, or perhaps judging me. That kind of stare wasn't new to me; I had felt it many times before. The difference was that this time, for some reason, it unsettled me more than usual. I decided to push those thoughts aside and focus on what Haruna was saying.
She was talking about something trivial, probably to fill the silence between us. But when I noticed her tone change and her voice grow more serious, I turned to look at her directly.
—What's wrong? —I asked, raising an eyebrow.
Haruna lowered her gaze, as if nervous about what she was about to say. At first, she didn't respond, but when she finally did, her voice was soft.
—Have you had breakfast yet?
The question caught me off guard. For a moment, I didn't know how to answer, but I finally shook my head.
—No, I haven't had breakfast —I said, trying to keep my tone casual.
The truth was I hadn't had the chance. The reason, of course, was Shizuka. She had woken up early, hungry as always, and I ended up making her something quick to eat so she'd stop complaining. By the time I finished, there was no time to think about myself. But that wasn't something Haruna needed to know.
To my surprise, her face lit up with a small smile.
—Then, when you're done with your interview with the manager, I'll treat you to something to eat —she said with a determination I didn't expect.
—What are you now, my mom? —I teased, letting out a light laugh—. I don't need breakfast to survive; I'm used to it.
She, however, didn't seem ready to back down.
—Well, I'm not going to let you keep going on an empty stomach —she retorted, crossing her arms as if daring me to refuse.
Her stubbornness made me smile. It was something I really hadn't expected from her, but at the same time, it was hard not to find it endearing. That's when an idea came to me to tease her a little more.
—Fine, but only if I can go out for a drink tonight —I said, throwing the phrase out with total nonchalance.
Haruna stopped abruptly, turning to me with an expression of surprise and a hint of nervousness.
—What? Go out for a drink?
—What's wrong with that? —I replied in an innocent tone, though I was enjoying her reaction far more than I should—. It's not a big deal.
She seemed unsure how to respond, and her reaction only encouraged me to continue.
—Don't worry, I'm not planning on going alone. Maybe I'll go with someone else.
That only seemed to make her more nervous. Haruna started mumbling things about girls' bars and places full of trouble, which made me laugh.
—Don't worry so much, Haruna. It's a joke —I finally admitted, raising my hands in surrender.
Just when I thought the matter was settled, I felt Haruna grab my arm with unexpected firmness, stopping me in my tracks.
—No, it's not —she said, her tone filled with determination—. I'll make sure you don't go to a bar tonight.
I was surprised for a moment, not so much by her words, but by the conviction in her gaze. She was completely determined, and for some reason, that made me more nervous than it should have.
—Haruna, listen. A place like that isn't for a good girl like you —I said, trying to use a paternal tone.
But her response was what truly left me speechless.
—If I have to follow you to stop you, then I won't be a good girl anymore, will I?
I couldn't help but look at her in disbelief. That answer was something I hadn't expected at all, and for a few seconds, I found myself at a loss for words. Haruna, on the other hand, seemed more confident than ever, as if her determination was unshakable.
Finally, I let out a soft laugh, surrendering to her logic.
—Alright, Haruna. You're right. But remember, if you keep going down this path, you'll end up being more mischievous than you think.
She smiled faintly, and though I tried to hide it, I couldn't help but feel a little relieved to see that expression on her face. For a moment, the unease from earlier disappeared, replaced by something warmer. Something that, though I wouldn't admit out loud, I was starting to enjoy far too much.
We arrived at the animal shelter after walking a few more minutes. It was a simple building but full of life, with walls decorated with murals of animals playing and a small green area at the entrance, where a couple of dogs happily chased a ball. The place radiated a sense of warmth and care; it was clear that those who worked there really loved what they did.
Upon entering, I was greeted by a mix of sounds: the lively barking of the dogs, the soft meowing of the cats, and the constant bustle of activity. There were clean cages lined along one wall, with cats of various colors watching curiously, and in the back, I could hear the sound of water, probably from someone cleaning.
I was about to comment on how cozy the place was, but before I could open my mouth, I felt Haruna take my hand in hers. Surprised, I looked down and noticed how her fingers intertwined with mine. Her face was completely red, but despite her evident nervousness, she looked at me with a shy smile.
—Come on, I'll guide you around the facilities —she said, her sweet tone trying to mask her agitation.
I didn't say anything about it, but I didn't pull my hand away either. I let her guide me as she showed me the different areas of the shelter: the dog section, where several puppies wagged their tails excitedly when they saw us pass by, the cat zone, where some stretched lazily in the sun, and a small veterinary clinic equipped with the essentials.
Finally, we reached an office at the back of the building. It was a modest but well-organized space, with a desk full of papers and some framed certificates on the walls. There was the shelter manager, a middle-aged man with graying hair and a kind but serious face. He was wearing a neatly ironed plaid shirt and glasses, which he adjusted as he watched us enter.
—Mr. Kobayashi, this is Ryota, the person I mentioned to you —Haruna said, smiling with pride as she made a slight bow to the man.
The manager looked me up and down, evaluating me with a critical eye but without any trace of hostility. Then, he turned his attention back to Haruna.
—Haruna, please wait outside while I speak with him.
—Oh... yes, of course —she replied, making a small bow before leaving the office, though I noticed her glance back with some nervousness before closing the door.
The interview was brief. The manager asked me several questions about my experience with animals, my willingness for physical work, and my available hours. I answered honestly, explaining that although I didn't have formal experience in a shelter, I had always had a natural affinity with animals and was willing to learn whatever was needed.
—Alright —he said finally, nodding in approval—. From what Haruna has told me, you seem like someone we can trust. The job isn't complicated: you'll mainly be in charge of taking the dogs out for the clients who leave them here for a while, as well as helping with some basic tasks around the shelter. The pay isn't much, but I hope it'll work for you.
—I understand, Mr. Kobayashi. Thank you for the opportunity.
When I left the office, Haruna was waiting for me right outside, with a mix of anxiety and expectation on her face. As soon as she saw me, she ran toward me.
—How did it go?! —she asked, her eyes shining with anticipation.
—Pretty well. They assigned me the job of taking the dogs out for the clients and helping with some shelter tasks —I replied, shrugging—. It's not complicated, but the pay isn't very high either.
—That doesn't matter! —Haruna exclaimed, jumping with joy—. The important thing is that now we'll work together!
Before I could respond, Haruna took my hand again.
—Come on! Now I'm going to show you the place in more detail —she said, with contagious energy as she dragged me behind her.
As we walked, I couldn't help but smile at her enthusiasm. Maybe this job would be more interesting than I had anticipated.
Haruna had taken me around to see all the facilities of the shelter. The dogs, full of energy and joy, jumped around me, demanding affection and attention. One, a young and playful Labrador, even tried to nibble at my shoes while barking excitedly. The cats, on the other hand, were more reserved. Some didn't even bother to look at me, but others came closer curiously and brushed against my legs before walking away with feline indifference. It was a curious dynamic, and I couldn't help but laugh as I tried to win over the more elusive ones.
Now, I was watching Haruna as she worked with one of the dogs. It was a small puppy, one of those that looked more like a ball of fur than an actual animal. Its light brown fur was completely messy, even covering part of its eyes, giving it a funny yet endearing look. Haruna, with special scissors in hand, carefully trimmed the excess fur while the little one wagged its tail, excited for the attention.
—Did you know this little one comes every month? —Haruna commented, turning to glance at me briefly with a smile—. Its owner is an elderly lady who can't take care of it as much as she'd like, so she always brings it here for us to groom it a bit.
—Every month? —I replied, raising an eyebrow as I watched the furry client—. Well, it's lucky that you're here to keep it looking cute. Though, if you ask me, with that face, it's got enough to melt hearts.
Haruna let out a soft laugh.
—Isn't it just adorable? It's a charm. Though sometimes it can be a bit mischievous. Look at how it's wagging its tail; I think it's happy that you're here.
I was listening attentively as she continued working, but then something unexpected happened. When she tried to pet the dog to calm it down, it quickly moved its paw and accidentally scratched her wrist. Haruna let out a small "Ow!" and the bandage she had on that area fell to the floor. My gaze fixed on her exposed wrist, where I noticed several scratches and marks that left me momentarily silent.
My eyes widened in surprise, but I soon sighed with relief when I realized they weren't what I had feared. They were just scratches and marks from dealing with animals. I had been unnecessarily worried, thinking it might be something more serious or emotional.
—It's okay, it's nothing —Haruna said with a nervous laugh as she picked up the bandage and calmly re-wrapped her wrist—. I'm used to these things; it happens all the time.
She kept working, unaware of how close I was becoming. A mischievous idea crossed my mind. I wanted to see how far I could go before she reacted. So, without making a sound, I approached from behind as she cheerfully talked about how much she enjoyed cutting animals' hair.
Suddenly, I caught her chin with a firm but gentle hand, forcing her to lift her gaze toward me. Silence fell over the room like a blanket. Her face was only inches from mine, and I couldn't help but curve my lips into a playful smile as I watched her intently.
My thoughts were in chaos. Part of me expected an explosive reaction: a scream, a slap, something that would result in my immediate defeat. But what I got was very different. Haruna was breathing quickly, and her cheeks turned a deep red that rivaled my own blush.
—D-did I do something wrong…? —she asked in a whisper, her voice trembling and barely audible, but with a tone that resonated strongly in the space between us.
My smile faded for a moment, replaced by a mix of nervousness and disbelief. I hadn't expected that reaction, much less the intensity with which her gaze seemed to search for answers in mine.
—Not exactly —I replied in the end, with a softer tone than I had planned as I carefully released her chin—. But you should pay more attention to what you're doing. You never know who might approach without you noticing.
Haruna looked away, clearly embarrassed, as I stepped back, trying to regain my composure. I could still feel the heat on my face, but I decided to hide it with a light cough.
—Well, it seems you take your work a little too seriously. But it's not bad to be a bit more cautious, don't you think?
She simply nodded shyly, refocusing her attention on the dog, while I tried to ignore the strange, fast-beating sensation in my chest.
...
It was surprising how quickly things were happening at the shelter. Only a few hours had passed since I started working, and I already had my first client. I was petting a miniature dog, a nervous Pomeranian with a golden, shiny coat, that kept spinning in circles as if it were desperate to get out.
—Well, buddy, it looks like you and I have a long day ahead —I murmured while scratching behind his ears, trying to calm him down.
Suddenly, I heard Haruna's familiar voice behind me.
—Are you ready for your first job, Ryota? —she asked, her tone cheerful but with a slight teasing touch.
I turned to look at her, and there she was, with that warm smile that somehow always seemed to light up any place she was in.
—What can I say? —I replied with a sideways smile—. I'm a very sought-after man. They're putting me to work as if I've been here for weeks.
—That's good. You'll get used to it quickly —she said, stepping a little closer and observing the dog—. This little one is a regular client. He's always anxious, but as soon as he goes for a walk, he calms down.
—Got any advice for a newbie like me?
—Yes, of course. Don't let him go under any circumstances —she answered, laughing as she looked at me intently.
The atmosphere was calm and slightly comedic, but suddenly, Haruna quickly shut the door she had come in through. The noise startled the Pomeranian, who took advantage of my brief distraction to wriggle free and run to the other side of the room.
—Hey! —I exclaimed, trying to stop him, but the little one was faster than I expected.
Before I could turn around to complain to Haruna for closing the door so abruptly, her voice stopped me.
—Ryota... —she said with a completely different tone, one that was serious and made me freeze for a moment—. Did you sleep with Shizuka?
My eyes widened in shock. What kind of question was that? I slowly turned my head to look at her, trying to process what I had just heard.
—What?
—Don't you dare lie to me. I saw you two this morning… together —she continued, her eyes fixed on mine.
I let out a long sigh, relaxing my posture instantly. Now it all made sense. That "shadow" I had seen this morning... It had been Haruna.
—So it was you —I murmured, more to myself than to her.
—Don't change the subject, Ryota. Tell me the truth —she insisted, crossing her arms as she looked at me with a mix of determination and nervousness.
—No, Haruna. I didn't sleep with her —I replied firmly, but not harshly.
I saw her expression soften a little, though she still seemed expectant.
—Then what were you doing together?
I ran a hand through my hair, thinking about how to explain what had happened.
—Last night, Shizuka came over to my apartment after drinking a lot. She was pretty playful and, well... we chatted a bit... and she fell asleep on the couch. I took her to my room so she could get a good rest, but I slept on the couch. That's all.
Haruna seemed to process my words, but then raised an eyebrow, with that inquisitive look that made me feel like she could see right through me.
—That's it?
—Well… I'm not going to lie. Shizuka and I have had our… adventures in the past —I admitted, shrugging—. But nothing happened last night.
I expected her to get angry, to give me a reproachful look or even say something hurtful, but to my surprise, her reaction was very different.
Suddenly, I felt a strong push. Confused, I fell to the ground, and before I could process it, Haruna was on top of me, just inches from my face.
Her breathing was fast, and her eyes were locked on mine, a mix of anger, nervousness, and something else I couldn't immediately identify.
—What the hell are you doing? —I murmured, completely baffled.
—Ryota... —she said, ignoring my question as her gaze intensified—. Did you do those things with her… but would you do them with me too?
Silence took over the room. My thoughts were in chaos, and for the first time in a long while, I didn't know what to say.
