Chapter 115: Lily (5)
Adam did not resist. He just watched and waited his mind a whirlwind of questions and calculations.
A short while later Philips came down to the basement. He was a completely different person. He had changed out of his school uniform into expensive designer clothes.
"So this is your true self," Adam said looking at Philips with a newfound understanding.
"You're all the same," Philips said his voice a low dangerous whisper that was far more terrifying than any shout.
"I tried to leave you all alone to live your pathetic little lives. But you just had to interfere. You always have to stick your noses where they don't belong."
Adam was confused. He could not believe that Philips had been acting all this time. He had been so convincing so perfect in his role as the quiet timid class representative.
He realized then that Philips had no real friends. He was always polite always friendly. But he was always alone. He never went home with anyone after school. He never studied with anyone. He had been living a lie for a very long time.
"You're going to regret this Philips," Anderson screamed his voice filled with a mixture of fear and a desperate defiance. "Do you know who my father is? He'll hunt you down! He'll make you pay for this!"
One of Philips's men a large imposing figure with a shaved head stepped forward and punched Anderson hard in the face. Blood trickled from his mouth and he cried out in pain.
"Your father is nothing more than a servant in my eyes," Philips said his voice a cold dismissive wave of his hand. "And even if he finds out that I've killed you he won't do anything once he knows who I really am."
Anderson was stunned. He could not believe that this small timid boy the one he had always looked down on was talking to him like this. It was a complete reversal of the natural order of things.
Adam's mind was racing. He knew of only a few people who could speak to the police commissioner like that.
A politician. Someone above the commissioner in the hierarchy of power. But would even a powerful politician have the authority to kill the commissioner's son without facing any consequences? Adam thought it was unlikely. It was too risky too public.
But the second possibility the one Adam was most curious about was an underworld family. A powerful criminal organization that masqueraded as legitimate industrialists in the real world but controlled the city's criminal underbelly from the shadows.
Adam smiled a cold knowing smile. "So you're from an underworld," he said a statement not a question.
Everyone in the room looked at him then at Philips.
Philips just smiled a small sad smile. "That's why we're all so afraid of you," he said his voice a quiet resignation.
"To be honest we gave the job to Johnny because we thought you were just a budding threat someone who might one day form your own faction and become a problem for us. We thought he could handle you. But Johnny's death and our own intel have made it clear that you're a much bigger threat than we ever anticipated. You have to die Adam. Or none of us will ever be able to live a peaceful life."
Everyone else in the room was stunned by this revelation. They had just been pawns in a much larger game a game played by monsters.
A cold fury washed over Adam. "So you're from the same family?," he said his voice a low dangerous growl. "Are you the family that killed my parents?"
There was a momentary glimpse of true terror in James' eyes as he stared first at Adam and then at Philips. Despite the fact that he was aware of Philips's power, he was not aware of the entire scope of that influence.
Philips looked down at the floor his expression unreadable. "I don't know which family it was," he said his voice a quiet whisper that was almost lost in the tense silence of the room. "But I do know that they're not from this country."
It was the first real clue Adam had gotten. The first piece of the puzzle that was his parents' murder. His parents' killers were not from here. They were outsiders.
Philips looked at his men. "Kill all the boys," he said. "Leave the girls."
Anderson and his friends Lily and her two friends were all stunned. The masked men grabbed Lily and her two friends and dragged them out of the room. Adam knew what was coming.
One of the masked men stepped in front of Anderson's friend.
"No no please don't kill us!" Anderson and his friends screamed. James was also begging for his life.
Anderson's friend was shot in the head by the masked man, who pulled out a pistol and started shooting. After that, he took the life of Anderson's other friend. And then there was James and Anderson. One shot to the head was used to put an end to each and every one of them.
Another man walked towards Adam his gun raised.
"Not this one," Philips said his voice a cold command. "He's mine."
He pulled a sleek black pistol from a concealed holster inside his expensive coat. He aimed it at Adam's chest. "Any last words?" he asked a small curious smile on his face.
Adam smiled back. "I know I'm going to die here," he said his voice calm and steady. "Just answer three questions for me. That's my last wish."
Philips was surprised by his calm demeanor. He was not afraid. He was not begging for his life like the others had. It was as if he had no fear of death at all.
Then Philips smiles and says, "So this is the effect it has on a personality. The underworld completely changed an ordinary schoolboy's entire personality. Your life will be quite painful".
