Hearing the voice, Ethan turned to look at him.
"Your challenge?"
"That's right," the man adjusted his collar, smiling confidently. "My name is Anthony. I'm the powerful Trainer known as the 'Beast Master'! I've never been defeated since I started training. So, what do you say? Dare to battle me?"
Anthony the Beast Master? Glancing at the Sandshrew at his feet, Ethan showed a knowing expression.
"I don't mind," Ethan said, looking around. "But where should we battle? There are streets everywhere around here; there's no battle arena."
Thanks to the popularization and widespread adoption of Pokémon battles by the League, much like outdoor basketball courts in his previous life, one could often find simple battle arenas in parks, schools, riverbanks, and shopping malls when walking through a city.
However, coincidentally, the area Ethan was currently in was quite a distance from any public battle facility.
"Of course not here." Anthony pointed toward Vermilion City. "I built a personal Gym not far ahead in the wilderness. There's a battle arena there. Follow me."
Saying this, he didn't give Ethan a chance to object and walked ahead. Ethan shook his head at his Pokémon and chose to follow.
The two walked one after another, leaving Cerulean City. After walking for another ten minutes or so, they indeed saw a simple camp constructed with fences and tents not far away. Outside the camp, a large sign stood, emblazoned with big letters: "Pokémon League Unofficial Gym, Currently 92 Consecutive Wins."
From the confident expression on Anthony's face and the words on the sign, it was clear he was a very self-assured Trainer. And he certainly liked to draw attention. However, his face, combined with his slightly bulky physique and thick, upturned eyebrows, looked somewhat goofy after a prolonged gaze.
Seeing Ethan staring at the sign, Anthony proudly declared, "My goal is 100 consecutive wins. Once I achieve that, I'll start traveling to challenge various Gyms and earn Badges."
"Sounds pretty impressive," Ethan complimented with a shrug, though his expression didn't show much admiration.
The two entered the camp and arrived at this so-called personal Gym. Through the open tent flap, Ethan immediately saw several Pokémon engaged in independent training. Butterfree and Beedrill flew and collided in the air, seemingly training their fighting skills, while on the ground, three Rattata, equipped with strengthening devices, appeared to be doing endurance exercises.
"How about it? My Gym is pretty good, isn't it?" Anthony came to the Trainer's command area and said to Ethan, "Now, if I defeat you, I'll have 93 consecutive wins, one step closer to my goal!"
"That's certainly something to celebrate," Ethan walked to the other side and said earnestly, "It's clear you're a formidable opponent, but I haven't lost a single battle since I started my journey either!" Just as he said, hadn't he been on a winning streak ever since he got Ralts? Both of them had winning streaks, so who was afraid of whom?
Beneath their feet was a hard packed-earth arena, formed by compacted soil. Although unremarkable, this type of ground was the most common outdoor battle arena in this world.
"Is that so? It seems today, someone's record is destined to be broken!" Anthony spread his hands, looking as if he couldn't do anything about Ethan. "Alright, let's get down to business. The battle rules are simple: each person uses one Pokémon. Whoever is standing last is the ultimate winner!"
Ethan nodded: "Okay, I understand."
Taking a whip from behind him, Anthony flicked it forward and shouted, "Sandshrew, let's show them our power!" As he spoke, the Sandshrew by his side slowly scurried onto the field.
From its appearance, this Sandshrew, apart from standing on two legs, was not significantly different from an pangolin on Earth. However, it was generally more rounded, with yellowish-brown skin that was hard and dry, featuring brick-like patterns, making it look like a wall made of bricks.
Ethan took out his Pokédex and aimed it at the Sandshrew. The Pokédex immediately provided feedback: "Beep. Sandshrew, the Mouse Pokémon. Ground-type. Dislikes water. Lives in deep burrows dug in dry places. If danger approaches, it curls into a ball to protect itself."
Type-wise, both Grass-type Bulbasaur and Water-type Squirtle had a type advantage against Ground-type Sandshrew. Although the specific plot details were a bit hazy, Ethan remembered that this Sandshrew had once defeated Ash and Team Rocket's trio. Therefore, he didn't dare to be careless. After careful thought, he waved his hand and directly sent out his ace Pokémon—Kirlia.
Looking at the maiden-like Kirlia, Anthony exclaimed in surprise, "Your Pokémon is quite unique! But it doesn't matter; the result will be the same regardless. Let's go, Sandshrew! Use Rollout!"
Sandshrew's four limbs moved rapidly forward. After gaining sufficient speed, its body curled into a perfect sphere, rolling toward Kirlia at extreme speed.
"Kirlia, use Double Team!"
Kirlia's body instantly split into dozens of illusions. Sandshrew, moving too fast, couldn't stop. It rolled past its original trajectory, only turning back to see that what it had rolled through was merely a false illusion.
"Kirlia, use Confusion!"
Kirlia raised a hand, and a glow suddenly enveloped Sandshrew. In an instant, with the sound of a whip crack, Sandshrew curled into a ball at incredible speed! Confusion activated, lifting Sandshrew high into the air and then slamming it heavily down. When the dust settled, it uncurled, shook its head, and then got up from the ground, clearly not having sustained much damage.
"Impressive," Ethan couldn't help but praise. "To use Defense Curl in an instant to defend against an attack—I must say, you've trained this Sandshrew quite well."
Anthony pouted, "Hmph, what's a little pain like that!? My Sandshrew has been rigorously trained; it has even overcome its weakness to water!"
"Oh?" Ethan raised an eyebrow, surprised. "A Ground-type Pokémon overcoming its Water-type weakness? That's truly amazing!"
In fact, Ethan had already noticed something during their brief exchange. Besides this Sandshrew's outstanding strength, its communication with Anthony was also very fast and precise. Often, Anthony would just flick his whip, and without a word, Sandshrew would understand Anthony's intent through the sound of the whip, thereby changing its attack to defeat the opponent with unexpected moves.
These two points had made them consistently successful in previous battles, achieving over ninety consecutive wins. However, now, facing Ethan and Kirlia's combination, they could be said to have met their match.
Ethan and Kirlia, of course, also shared excellent synergy. Furthermore, thanks to the red horn on its head, Kirlia could quickly sense Ethan's emotions, and being a Psychic Pokémon, it could even read some of Ethan's thoughts to some extent.
Ethan is facing a formidable opponent in Anthony and his well-trained Sandshrew, which has surprisingly overcome its Water-type weakness. The battle of instincts and Trainer-Pokémon bonds is heating up!
What do you think will happen next in this intriguing battle?
