I Reincarnated into a Game Filled with Mods

Chapter 21

“No, how on earth did I manage to parry that?”

After clearing the Headless Armored Cavalier, I groaned as I carried the spear used by the cavalier. I planned to use this massive spear and the severed horse head as proof of my subjugation.

It’s not like I was simply swinging this brutal weapon; I was giving it my all while mounted, and yet I was able to parry without any issues. I found it quite amazing.

In reality, I would have been sent flying as soon as I got hit, whoosh!

The horse stood patiently where I had tied its reins, waiting for me. After giving its mane a few strokes, I hung the weapon by the saddle. On the opposite side, I tied the severed horse head.

Although both items looked heavy enough for me to struggle with, the horse seemed unfazed.

‘Well, one thing’s sorted.’

I hopped onto the horse and grabbed the reins. Even though I had cleared the Headless Armored Cavalier, it wasn’t time to return to the Knight order yet. I still had to find something to tempt that lord.

I urged the horse towards a nearby mountain. It took nearly half a day just to get there.

It was definitely sunny when I set off, but by the time I arrived at my destination, the horizon was painted with a crimson sunset, whoosh.

After tying the horse to a nearby tree, I approached a massive rock. Behind this giant rock was the entrance to the dungeon I was looking for.

If I were to progress the game traditionally, noticing the secret behind it would happen around the mid-story point. Until then, it wouldn’t make sense for me to be here at all.

Unless I casually ignored the main story and just completed subquests.

However, knowing the secret made entering easy. I pulled out a round stone from my pouch. It was an item dropped by the Headless Armored Cavalier.

This was the key to unlock the seal at the dungeon entrance. Apparently, a wandering wild horse had accidentally swallowed it while grazing and was consumed by its power, giving birth to the Headless Armored Cavalier.

With that in hand, I walked around the rock, pushing through the overgrown grass. In the game, you would need to set this place ablaze with fire magic for the secret to be revealed, but I could clear some grass without setting it on fire.

After tearing the grass apart, something emerged from beneath the dirt. A circular hole was in the center, flanked by intricately inscribed stone tablets.

The inscriptions on both tablets were warnings. To summarize, it said, ‘If you can read this, do not break the seal of the demon.’

‘Not that it’s particularly useful.’

I figured that anyone daring enough to explore a place located at the very outskirts of the Empire wouldn’t turn back after seeing such warnings.

I inserted the item dropped by the Headless Armored Cavalier into the circular hole of the stone tablets. The item fit perfectly. Suddenly, the tablet emitted a faint white light.

Stepping back a bit, I observed the rock. It began to rumble, rumble, vibrating as cracks started to form on its surface. Cracks spreading from the bottom quickly engulfed the entire rock.

Before long, with a loud crack, the rock collapsed. Broken pieces of stone tumbled down the slope, and dust billowed up around me.

‘Finally.’

I waved my arms to clear the dust. In the spot where the rock had fallen, I could see an entrance to the dungeon just big enough for one person to slip through. The item I was looking for was inside.

After confirming there were no monsters nearby, I returned to my horse and pulled a torch from the saddle.

In the game, I could just throw it in a quick slot and pull it out by scrolling the mouse wheel, but now I had to light it myself.

Since I was using flint for the first time, I fumbled around a bit before finally striking a spark.

‘How come there are air conditioners, fans, and fluorescent lights, but no lighter?’

Is it because fire magic exists in this world?

Holding the torch in my left hand and drawing the blood-stained sword with my right, I stood before the dungeon entrance. I had also strapped a pouch filled with supplies to my waist just in case.

In the game, it had been a comfortably sized dungeon, but who knows how vast it might have become now? Just like the time I had to take forever to reach the Headless Armored Cavalier’s boss field.

I slowly stepped inside. The smell of mildew typical of old spaces hit me.

‘Looks like there’s nothing different from the game……’

There might be differences inside, but at a glance, it seemed just like the game. I continued walking through the corridor.

This place had been a site of a fierce battle long ago, where the priests and holy knights of the Holy Kingdom had failed in their subjugation against a demon and sacrificed their lives to seal the cave as a backup plan.

The warning to not break the seal was for that very reason. If a demon powerful enough to cause the Holy Kingdom to fail its subjugation was released back into the world, a catastrophe would surely follow.

However, the Holy Kingdom had misunderstood one critical fact about this demon. The demon, like them, had suffered immense damage from the priests’ and holy knights’ attacks.

Its flesh had been torn to pieces and scattered throughout the dungeon, and, while its divine power was being purified, it desperately fought back and managed to drive the priests and holy knights away, but the damage it sustained was severe.

With most of its power dissipated, it had been impossible to naturally recover. Thus, even with a wild horse swallowing the key to the seal, it hadn’t been able to break the seal until now.

As a result, it had to wait for someone to come and break the seal while trapped within a book to prevent its own annihilation back to Hell.

If only the Holy Kingdom had realized this, they might have sacrificed even more to cling on until the end. Such a shame.

‘……I might hear that story later.’

From the demon itself, no less.

That was one of the notable features of Brightest Darkness 4. You could clear one quest under multiple conditions, so to see all the stories, multiple playthroughs were essential.

—Uuuaaaaa……

A sound like a deflated moan echoed from deep within the cave. I aimed my blood-stained sword. It was just the beginning.

Something staggered into view from the distance, making a groaning sound. Its flesh had rotted away completely, rusted armor hung from its body, and it held a toothless sword.

It was the corpse of a holy knight who supposedly fought against the demon here. The demon’s flesh had clung onto the scattered remains, reanimating it as an undead.

While it was now but a rotting corpse, the fact that it once was a holy knight was evident as the undead staggered into position.

I rested the torch momentarily on the right ground, gripping the blood-stained sword with both hands. The undead holy knight raised its sword overhead and lunged forward.

I rolled to the right, dodging the attack, and swung my sword at its side. The sound of its ancient sword clashing against the floor clang! echoed in the cave as I tore through its side.

It didn’t seem to care whether its side was injured or not, turning back to lunge at me again. This was the annoying aspect of undead mobs. They didn’t get stunned even if they were hit.

Unless the attack was massive enough to blow its body away, regular attacks wouldn’t cause any stun at all.

Think of them as always being in a super armor state against regular weapons.

—Thud!

‘But parrying does work.’

After exchanging a few rounds of parries, I noticed its movements slow down and pulled out a small shield with my left hand to deflect its swung sword.

With a pleasant ting sound, its body swayed, and I drove the blood-stained sword into its neck and twisted it.

Crack, its head turned 180 degrees, and with a ripping sound, it spun off. The body without a head flailed its arms before collapsing, while the head now lost floated off, chattering its jaw.

I was curious why the so-called combat fatigue accumulated even for undead who were already corpses, but I didn’t want to indulge in unnecessary questions. I used it because I could.

I picked up the torch I had set aside and kicked the corpse to see if the item I was looking for dropped. But nothing caught my eye.

‘Tch, what a bust.’

It seemed I would have to wander around here a bit longer. If I was lucky, the two ladies I had just encountered might drop something, and I could head straight for the book.

I heard the shuffling of corpses nearby again. Well, that was fine. I only needed two items. I could probably gather that in just a few minutes.

Back when I had to collect 100 items for achievements, I almost threw my mouse. Compared to that, this was nothing.

—Uuuaaaargh……

This time, two undead clad in priest robes stepped out. I set the torch aside again and grabbed the blood-stained sword with both hands.

The basic rule of gacha is to keep rolling until you get it out.
