I Reincarnated into a Game Filled with Mods

Chapter 22

Exploration ended quite smoothly. Did I collect around 30 heads by combining the priest’s and holy knight’s? I confirmed I dropped both items I wanted. It didn’t take as long as I thought.

I grabbed them and headed straight to the place with the book. Contrary to my worries, the dungeon’s scale was perfectly identical to the game, so finding my way was easy.

I ignored the occasional undead that popped up along the way. Now that I secured my items, there was no need to tussle with those things.

‘It’s definitely here.’

The entrance to the room where the demon slept looked so holy, with prayer inscriptions written in the strings of the Holy Kingdom. Even those undead wouldn’t dare approach this place.

Honestly, even if they had just locked the door, unless someone else came in, the demon wouldn’t be able to release the seal by itself. But they didn’t know that.

I circled the room, searching for the collapsed pile of stones. Everywhere else was neat, but only one spot was crumbled, making it easy to identify.

I approached the stone pile and groaned as I rolled the top rock aside. It revealed a small hole that a person could crawl through.

I crawled right inside.

The passage was just short enough that my head popped out quickly. Just to be safe, I looked around before exiting. I felt relieved that there were no enemies and stood up.

It was a space filled with a gloomy and ominous aura. I’d say it felt like power was slowly seeping away.

Even if I stayed here in the game, there weren’t any debuffs, so it was likely just my imagination.

I glanced around. The torches fixed to the wall had long burned down to the handles, leaving only ash, and in the center of the room was a rectangular altar.

On that altar lay the book I was looking for.

‘Found it.’

This was the book that sealed the demon. It was about the thickness of my finger, and both the cover and the pages inside were a pitch-black dark color.

I approached the altar and picked up the book without any hesitation. The demon was in a significantly weakened state, so simply grabbing it wouldn’t cause any harm.

The cover had some unknown letters written in a row. Supposedly the demon’s language, but I didn’t particularly want to read it, so I just passed it off as something written there.

Instead, I pulled out the item I had been waiting to drop while beating the priest’s and holy knight’s undead from my waist pouch.

This was the piece of demon flesh that was said to be scattered throughout the cave.

It was overall a sickly red color and occasionally had a creepy wriggle on its own. Reminded me of animal liver I had seen on the internet.

‘Liver doesn’t wriggle on its own, though.’

Muttering quietly, I held one piece of demon flesh against the book. The book slowly absorbed it. Was it a process of them merging back to their original form?

The second piece was similar. The book wriggled as it absorbed the flesh I held, and once the absorption was complete, it stopped moving. The cover’s color was slightly redder than before.

This was enough. I tucked the book into the pouch I brought. Now, before returning to the knight order, I just needed to pick up one more item.

‘Should’ve leveled up a couple more times, right?’

I calculated the experience points I gained so far for a moment. The headless armored cavalier should have given enough experience to level up at least twice.

If that didn’t work, I could always go level up a bit after returning to the knight order.

I had to crawl through the same small opening to get out. That door wasn’t designed for entry or exit so it had no handle.

As I stood up, the undead, who had been staggering around, looked at me with their rotting and droopy eyes. But unlike before, they didn’t attempt to attack me.

It was because of the book I was holding.

Those were all resurrected as undead by possessing pieces of the demon, so of course, they wouldn’t attack me, the one holding the book inhabited by the demon.

And I didn’t radiate any strong divine power. They’d just think a devil worshiper was taking the book to release the seal.

I glanced at the surrounding undead before turning to the path opposite to the one I came from. They were practically just punching bags in this situation, but I wasn’t eager to take the risk.

If bad luck struck, another piece of flesh might get absorbed by the book.

In this situation, killing them wouldn’t drop flesh as loot but would get absorbed by the book directly, so anything could go wrong with my plan.

Plus, before they dropped flesh, they would just resurrect again no matter how many times I killed them, making the experience efficiency a total disaster. It had been about 2 or 3 experience points for each kill in the first round.

With my pathetic level, that was a waste of time. There were plenty of more efficient leveling spots than this.

‘Not worth it.’

The path twisted and turned. There were quite a few undead along the way, but they all just stared blankly at me without taking any action.

How long had it been as I kicked away the ones blocking my path? I could see an end ahead. A dead-end.

‘There’s a corpse…’

In front of me was a dried-up skeleton leaning against the wall. An individual dispatched from the Holy Kingdom to exterminate the demon in the past.

Wearing fancier clothes and, unlike the other priests, their corpse hadn’t risen as an undead, it seemed likely they were a very powerful priest among the users.

I cautiously approached the bones and rummaged through the clothing. I felt something sharp at waist level. I picked it up.

What I held was a seemingly ordinary dagger.

Despite the long passage of time, it hadn’t rusted and remained sharp, a dagger forged with divine power. In the game, it would be labeled as ‘blessed.’

‘So, I can pick it up after all. It probably won’t show its true power even if I swing it now.’

I carefully tucked it away. If the book inhabited by the demon was vital for luring the lord, this dagger was crucial for dealing with the lured lord.

I didn’t need to linger here any longer.

Just like when I came, I kicked away the undead who just stared at me blankly without any action, and after a while, I stepped outside, where complete darkness had descended.

Holding the torch to illuminate my surroundings, I headed towards where the horse was. The horse was quietly tied to a tree and whinnied when it saw me. I patted its mane and untied my pouch from the saddle.

Now it was time to return to the knight order and kill that lord.

In a room adorned with all sorts of holy items, a woman opened her eyes.

There was no light source in the room, but light from the full moon poured in through the stained glass, illuminating the room so it wasn’t dark at all.

The woman, rising and approaching the window, quietly brought her hands together in front of her chest. A mixture of yellow and white holy power surged in her clasped hands.

How long had it been since that power manifested? The door burst open. It was a woman with a smile on her face.

“Why have you summoned me, Your Holiness?”

“The demon’s seal has been broken.”

“Oh my.”

The woman covered her mouth with her right hand, as if startled by the words of the one she called Your Holiness. Yet, her expression didn’t appear genuinely shocked. It seemed more like she was just pretending to be surprised.

“Which seal are we talking about? Everything existing in our Holy Kingdom is strictly managed… It must be from the Empire, right?”

“Yes, indeed.”

“Shall we go catch the one who released the seal? Or shall we exterminate the demon?”

The entity called Your Holiness shook her head slightly.

“There’s no need for you to do that. There is light even there.”

“Light, huh… Well, I don’t quite trust that woman.”

“She is a woman wielding the holy sword. A demon wouldn’t stand a chance against her. Worry not.”

“That’s true. Although her personality is a bit of a mess, she’s a holy sword bearer. So, if we aren’t going to catch the one who broke the seal or exterminate the demon right away, why did you summon me?”

“I merely wanted to convey the fact. Even now that the seal is broken, I’ve realized that the power of that demon is significantly weakened. Even our apprentice nun could easily deal with that demon.”

“But what does that matter to the people of the Empire? No matter how weakened it is, without faith, they couldn’t possibly kill a demon. It would be lucky if they don’t inadvertently help the demon regain strength.”

The Pope nodded. Her long, wave-like blonde hair formed a golden tide.

“Then I’ll just let the kids know. I won’t instigate a holy war against the demon, but I’ll say to train harder than usual just in case. Is that sufficient?”

“Yes, that is sufficient.”

Hearing the Pope’s answer, the woman, who was about to turn and leave, suddenly recalled something as if she had forgotten, exclaiming, “Ah!”

“Your Holiness. May I ask one more thing?”

“Of course.”

“If I ever do set off to start a holy war later, what will happen to the one who broke the seal?”

Her green eyes narrowed slightly. Those eyes sparkled with a very cruel emotion. There was a deadly sadistic glint in her green pupils.

“Do as you wish. I won’t interfere, Inquisitor.”

“I will gladly do so.”

The woman called the Inquisitor left the room with a bright smile and a slight bow. The Pope gazed quietly at the closed door before turning to the stained glass.

“Your Holiness. One more thing.”

To be precise, she tried to turn. Had it not been for the sudden opening of the door and the Inquisitor’s head popping in.

Though it would normally be infuriating to see such a disrespectful demeanor and tone while meeting the Pope, the Pope spoke calmly and gently.

“What else do you need?”

“Do I need to inform the Pope of the Moon separately?”

Upon hearing that question, the Pope glanced at the moonlight seeping through the stained glass.

“You don’t need to.”

The sky was filled with a remarkably round full moon.

“Tonight is a night when the full moon rises.”
