Chapter 20: [20] I Don’t Expect You to Study Well
Chapter 20: I Don't Expect You to Study Well
The school day had come to an end.
Shuchiin Academy's dismissal time was relatively early, just like most Japanese high schools, as the afternoon was reserved for club activities.
And on just his first day of classes, Ronan had already caused a stir.
He joined the student council as its treasurer, openly threatened members of the Club Federation, joined the high school division's Public Moral Committee, restrained three students in response to a near-broken window, and wrote a self-reflection report that also happened to include insults directed at the kendo club captain.
As a freshman, Ronan's first day was already one for Shuchiin Academy's history books.
"Joining the student council and the public moral committee… If it weren't for the trouble you stirred up, I'd say your first day was nearly perfect."
"I think today was quite fulfilling."
"If you didn't find all that fulfilling, I'd honestly be scared."
Inside the faculty office, Kaname looked at Ronan's calm expression and felt a headache coming on.
"Well… at least everything you did today is still within the realm of what I can tolerate."
"Thanks for the compliment. I'll continue to work hard tomorrow."
"No, don't! Just be a normal student!" Kaname couldn't help but interject.
If Ronan kept this up, she feared this historic school might just explode.
"Anyway, let's drop that topic. Are you planning to join any clubs?"
"I already signed up."
Ronan handed the form to Kaname, who took a quick glance at the contents.
"The astronomy club, huh… Well, that's acceptable. At least it shows you're trying to live a normal student life."
Kaname handed the form back to Ronan and began organizing the lesson plans on her desk.
"Try to enjoy school life a little—maybe even fall in love."
"Is that really something a teacher should be saying? Shouldn't you be telling me to study hard and strive for excellence, Aunt Kaname?"
"No, I've given up. Expecting you to focus on studying properly is just impossible."
Kaname looked at Ronan with a completely expressionless face.
"At the very least, if you fall in love, you'll pour all your energy into your girlfriend. That way, you won't have the extra time or strength to stir up chaos at school. I'm genuinely worried that one day, you'll end up blowing Shuchiin sky-high."
"Isn't that a bit exaggerated?"
"Not from my experience, it isn't."
...
With the club application form in hand, Ronan headed up to the rooftop as planned—he was supposed to meet Momo.
Shuchiin's astronomy club was located on the rooftop, supposedly because it offered a clear view of the stars.
However, considering that most school clubs shut down before nightfall, that reasoning didn't hold up at all.
"Momo-senpai, I'm here."
Pushing open the rooftop door, Ronan stepped inside with his application form.
In the open space of the rooftop, an inflatable couch lay on the ground, and Momo was sprawled on it, playing on her phone. A plush toy sat beside her, and her shoes were casually discarded to the side.
It was obvious that this wasn't a club activity—Momo was simply using the rooftop as her personal lounge.
"Mm."
Setting her phone down, Momo took the application form from Ronan and placed it beside her.
She crossed her legs on the inflatable couch, resting her chin on her hand as she gazed at Ronan standing before her.
"I never really asked… What was up with you suddenly leaving Japan four years ago?"
"I already explained at lunch. Had some conflicts with the Shinomiya family, so I left Japan for a while."
As Ronan spoke, he casually cleared a space on the floor and sat down. With practiced ease, he pulled a pack of cigarettes from his pocket.
One pack had already been confiscated by Hayasaka earlier, but fortunately, he had a backup.
"Now that I think about it, you were only twelve back then, right? You were already smoking at that age? Your family didn't care?"
"My body's built differently. No matter how early I start smoking or drinking, it doesn't affect me."
Ronan exhaled a smoke ring as he spoke.
"My mom kept an eye on me at home, but my dad just turned a blind eye. Besides, during New Year's, he and I would always have a little baijiu together."
"What a bizarre family."
"I think it's fine."
"Still, as a public moral committee member, you're blatantly breaking school rules."
"What can I do? Nicotine addiction is a thing. Besides, I only joined the public moral committee because I got sick of watching couples flaunt their relationships in front of me. Figured I'd find a way to keep them from showing off."
"What did couples ever do to offend you?"
"Got dumped… Wait, do I seriously have to explain my tragic past to everyone? This is terrible for my self-esteem."
"You got dumped?"
Momo narrowed her eyes slightly.
"You had a girlfriend?"
"Of course not. As boyfriend material, I'm basically industrial waste. When I was twelve, I didn't know a damn thing and went to confess to a girl—got rejected instantly. Leaving the country had something to do with that, too. Just needed a change of scenery, y'know?"
"Who's that girl?"
"Hayasaka Ai. She's still at this school—Class 2-A."
"Oh, that girl who wears makeup, paints her nails, and does every single thing a typical high school girl would do?"
Momo scoffed dismissively.
"Didn't take you for someone who likes that type."
"You really know how to make a guy feel terrible. Besides, she wasn't always like that. No idea what she's pretending to be now—probably just trying to fit in better."
"You're the one who's unbearable."
"Hah?"
"It's pathetic. You got rejected by a completely ordinary girl, and instead of moving on, you ran off to another country without a word? That's seriously something you did?"
Momo's face was filled with discontent.
"You were the same guy who stormed into a crowd with a box cutter just to pull me out of another group. Where did that fearlessness go?"
"Back then, I was just reckless and stupid. Besides, romance has nothing to do with personal strength."
"You've got the face of a mixed-blood pretty boy, your background—while unclear—definitely isn't ordinary, and you were capable enough to take over the entire Peace Association's business at a young age. With conditions like that, why the hell would you let a plain girl's rejection mess with you? You should've just shrugged it off with a 'not choosing me is your loss' attitude."
At this point, Momo let out a long, frustrated sigh.
"I thought at the very least, it would've been someone on Shinomiya Kaguya's level."
"Who in their right mind would deliberately make their life harder by falling for a woman from the Shinomiya family? You'd have to be completely brain-dead."
"Well, coincidentally, the current student council president happens to be that exact kind of brain-dead person."
"..."
