I Don't Want An Ordinary Life

Chapter 19: [19] Baffling Behavior

Chapter 19: Baffling Behavior

"Remember, we're public moral committee members—we can't be the ones breaking the rules."

"I get it, but with all due respect, Iino, while your actions may seem decisive, slipping away from you is quite easy. If you want to punish those people, you need to take stronger measures."

Ronan and Miko walked outside the school building. Normally, after class, Miko would patrol with Kobachi to crack down on rule-breakers, but this time, Ronan was with them.

"Well… I'm trying to find a way, but vandalizing school property is a bit…"

"It's a necessary sacrifice for maintaining order. Besides, I already paid for the damages—from my already limited allowance of 23 million dollars."

"The financial loss isn't even the main issue," Kobachi remarked, accustomed to making side comments whenever Ronan spoke.

"The problem is that those students were just standing in a room reading magazines when suddenly, someone shattered a window and scared them half to death. Luckily, none of the broken glass injured them, or this wouldn't have been resolved so easily."

"Oh, so it was just something minor like that."

"It's not minor! Could you at least try to consider other people's feelings?"

Hearing that, Ronan turned his head in confusion, looking at Kobachi with a puzzled expression.

"Why should I care about what others think? Isn't the job of a public moral committee member to enforce the rules with strict measures?"

"…How should I put this? Ronan, do you never care about other people's emotions?"

"No, I don't. Because I don't know what they're thinking, and I see no reason to care. What needs to be done must be done, regardless of how others feel about it."

Back in Afghanistan, every time he pulled the trigger, another person died. It wasn't like he could hesitate and wonder whether the person in his scope wanted to die or not.

If they didn't want to die, should he just not shoot? Impossible. Thinking about such things was meaningless.

"I joined the public moral committee to eliminate all couples from this school and turn it into a place where everyone focuses solely on their studies. To achieve that, extreme measures are necessary. I hope you can understand."

"No… I understand what you're trying to do. What we don't understand is your methods."

Hearing Ronan's words, Kobachi adjusted her glasses, the lenses reflecting a faint glimmer of light.

She didn't know much about Ronan, the newly transferred foreign student. Normally, an outsider from the "mixed department" wouldn't be this bold right after arriving at school.

Besides, his actions were downright baffling.

"This is really strange… What do you think, Iino—wait, what's with that expression?"

Kobachi turned to look at Miko, only to find her smiling with delight.

"I see… Using the strictest measures to maintain school discipline? So Ronan actually understands my ideals!"

"…What kind of nonsense are you thinking? That's just Ronan's own bizarre behavior."

"Oh, that reminds me of something."

Ronan suddenly clapped his hands.

"Besides cracking down on impure relationships and students bringing contraband to school, what else do the public moral committee members need to do?"

"We handle all disciplinary violations," Kobachi explained. "For example, preventing conflicts. At Shuchiin Academy… how should I put it? There are a lot of student disputes."

"Oh? Such as?"

"For example, the children of rival company presidents involved in hostile takeovers, heirs entangled in inheritance disputes, and children from long-feuding noble families… Ah, here they come."

"Hm?"

The group simultaneously looked ahead.

The surrounding students quickly backed away, casting nervous glances at the two people glaring at each other—a boy and a girl.

The boy was the Kendo Club captain whom Ronan had seen during lunch break, though he still didn't know his name. The girl, however, was someone he was familiar with—Momo Ryuji, the Astronomy Club president.

"Tch, your dad hasn't been arrested yet?"

"Like your useless old man could do anything about it."

"Let's see how cocky you are once your dad ends up in prison."

"Hah? Mind your own damn business."

Kobachi sighed. "The son of the Superintendent General of the police… and the daughter of the Ryujugumi Yakuza family leader. Even at school, cops and criminals' kids can't get along, huh?"

"Oh? So what do we do now?" Ronan asked, intrigued.

"It's dangerous, but we have to step in and stop them—"

"Wait, you two!"

Before Kobachi could finish speaking, Miko had already stepped forward, positioning herself between the two glaring individuals, standing right in the middle of the tense atmosphere.

"Public Moral committee? What are you doing here?"

"Step aside. This has nothing to do with you."

Both of them turned to glare at Miko, but she stood her ground, refusing to back down. However, anyone could see the nervousness written all over her face.

"Alright, alright, let's all calm down."

Ronan stepped forward, gently pulling Miko out from between them. Then, turning to Momo, he spoke.

"Miss Ryuji, you—"

"Hm?"

"Alright, fine, Momo-senpai. Try to get along with your classmates on campus. You two looked like you were about to start throwing punches."

"Tch."

Though clearly dissatisfied, Momo took a step back.

She glanced at Kobachi and Miko before turning back to Ronan.

"Joining the student council wasn't enough for you? Now you're in the public moral committee too?"

"I have my own ambitions."

"Did you finish filling out the form I gave you at lunch?"

"Yeah, it's done."

"Meet me on the rooftop after school."

"Got it."

Ronan flashed an "OK" gesture, and with that, Momo finally left.

"…That's it? It's over? That was impressive," Miko muttered in disbelief.

"I thought it would take a long time to mediate this conflict, but it turns out Ronan is actually quite—"

Before Kobachi could finish, Ronan turned his attention to the Kendo Club captain.

"Oi, brat. You think you can act up on the public moral committee's turf? You must have a death wish."

"…" Miko was speechless.

"I can't believe someone like you became a public moral committee member," the Kendo captain said with a look of disgust. "It was already bad enough that you came to this school, but joining both the student council and the public moral committee? Disgusting."

"Not happy? Then let's settle this in your Kendo Club. No bamboo swords—real blades. Let's see some blood, you sheltered brat."

Without hesitation, Ronan raised his middle finger at him.

"Are you threatening me?"

"Yes. I am threatening you."

"Is this how a public moral committee member is supposed to—"

"Shut it! The public moral committee doesn't need your input on how to do its job."

"…"

Kobachi couldn't help but cover her face with her hand.

"Yep… still full of baffling behavior."
