Chapter 11: Chapter 10
Dust particles danced whimsically in the shafts of shattered light that streamed through cracked windows, illuminating the grim scene before them. The once-solid floor was now marred by blood-stained and splattered evidence, testifying to a fierce battle that had been fought. Alex loomed over the remnants of the shredded curse, standing tall as a pillar of strength. His face was a mask of unwavering determination, eyes steely and focused as he surveyed the aftermath.
Nearby, Yuji leaned heavily against a wall, his body battered by injuries yet refusing to allow the pain to seep through his resolve. His breath came in short, controlled gasps, but a spark in his eyes defied his exhaustion.
With a wry smile etched upon her lips, Nobara, the voice of reason among them, elegantly navigated the rubble underfoot; she raised her brow, signalling both amusement and critique. "You guys really know how to leave your mark, don't you?" she teased her words, a lighthearted jab that evoked a sense of camaraderie amidst the chaos.
Yuji managed a breathless laugh, and his spirit momentarily brightened. "All credit goes to Alex," he said, his attempt at humour serving as a welcome relief in the otherwise tense atmosphere. Alex simply shrugged, his gaze still fixed on the ground, reflecting both humility and a relentless focus on the task at hand.
The door creaked open, and Megumi entered next, weapon firmly in hand, his gaze sharp and discerning as he scanned the room for threats. Finally, Gojo sauntered in last, hands casually tucked into his pockets, a playful smirk dancing on his lips. "That's one way to redecorate," he remarked his tone light, almost mocking the brutality of their surroundings.
The group fell into silence as Megumi knelt down, intent on rummaging through the remains of the vomited curse. His hands sifted through the grotesque remnants until they emerged, grasping a mummified, cursed finger that pulsed faintly with a dark malevolence, a sinister reminder of the entity they had just vanquished. "Not part of the curse," he noted, his voice tinged with curiosity mixed with disgust.
"Gross," Nobara muttered, scrunching her face in distaste as she looked away from the hideous object.
Instantly, Yuji's posture stiffened, a nervous energy radiating from him. "Isn't that…?" His grin twisted in a way that suggested something deeper was at play as Sukuna's presence began to surface, looming just beneath the surface of his consciousness.
Without exchanging a single word, the cursed spirit took a step forward, extending an arm toward the finger as if it were a long-lost treasure. However, before he could make contact, Alex acted without hesitation, moving swiftly and decisively to slap Sukuna sharply across the side of the head. The loud crack echoed through the air, a stark warning to the malevolent force within Yuji.
The impact caused Yuji to collapse to the ground, his body limp and unresponsive. The rest of the team remained still, a heavy silence enveloping them as they processed what had just transpired.
After a tense few seconds, Yuji groaned softly as he blinked and sat up, confusion etched across his features. "What the hell was that?" he mumbled, still reeling from the sudden confrontation.
Gojo walked over, his demeanour unruffled, and picked up the finger that had fallen near Yuji's side with the nonchalance of someone recovering a mere trinket. He tucked it away into his jacket as if it were just another casual errand.
Massaging his temple to clear his mind, Yuji grumbled, "Sukuna makes his desires quite obvious." A trace of frustration laced his tone, as if he had grown accustomed to and drained by the spirit's unpredictable behavior.
Alex muttered in reply, "Tough luck," his tone lacking sympathy but underscoring the reality of their precarious situation.
Megumi slid his blade into its sheath with a swift motion, a signal that he was finished with the immediate danger. "So, what now?" he asked, raising an eyebrow as he scanned the room for any remaining threats.
Nobara huffed, her frustration evident. "Can we please not fight anything else today?" she exclaimed, a twinge of annoyance lacing her voice.
Alex smirked, the tension in the air starting to ease just a bit. "At least let's get a drink," he suggested, his smile infectious as he looked at his companions.
Yuji nodded enthusiastically, grinning widely. "Now that's a plan," he said, the promise of respite igniting a spark of hope in the aftermath of their confrontation.
