chapter 357: A rat to kill

Apollo flick his hand and his skill Automatic weaponry created orbs, enducing them with the authority of gravity. A heavy weaight presses those creatures that accidentally got into Apollo's space cube.

He then walk forward not interested at finishing the immobilized beasts.

Soon however he had no choice but to kill, despite not trying to harm anyone, magical beasts would attack Apollo wanting to kill the boy out of thier instict.

Blood soaked the snow. The air thickened with dark mana, growing heavier the farther he went.

"There's something wrong with this place," he muttered.

[Confirmed. Mana density is abnormal. It's as if the very forest is being engulf by a strange presence]

"What is even stranger is that we only felt it when we got closer, something is controlling that powerful aura so that no one will notice "

He walk even more, minutes passed. Dozens no, hundreds of magical beasts had fallen under his feet. And then he saw it.

A faint glow.

Pulsing.

Apollo closed his eyes and try to feel it.

It was there, something else is silently breathing

Knowing it was the source he rush forward, only to a light

Apollo stopped walking and instead floated just above a broken clearing. And there amidst the carnage stood a beast unlike the rest. A grotesque thing quite similar to the unknown creature he one fought with Alicia, it was more structure than creature, like a pile of flesh put together. It had dozens of legs but no mouth. Its body was warped together but looks incomplete. Right when Apollo thought tha nothing could surprise him any more. He saw the creature's stomach open. And to his dismay it was actually a mouth, full of sharp razor teeths and five giant tongues.

"What the fuck" he could only say feeling his stomach churning, the boy wanted to blast it but decided not to and observe more. Back to the mouth a steady stream of light came out, and from that light, new beasts emerged.

"They're being... spawned," Apollo breathed. "And if the strange phenomenon of hordes is happening throughout the empire...it means" Apollo loook disgusted ust imagining dozens of those creatures moving together.

He flew forward, closer. He needed to see more. He need more data in order to calculate his next attack.

Jeremiah spoke again, voice urgent now.

[Creator, look at its core. Enhancing your vision.]

Apollo squinted as golden runes lit up in his retinas.

And then he saw it.

Buried in the monster's chest, embedded like a heart, was a Fragment.

A shard of the soul of the five pillar's greatest teacher. A piece of what had once broken and somehow contains a power that could bend reality. And now... it was corrupting mana, twisting it into endless horrors.

"No wonder they're endless. This isn't just a beast," he whispered. "Its a mutation forced by the power of the fragmet. That beast is using that power to mass-produce magical life."

"But what I wanted to know it what kind of beast is this originally? Before it was mutated by the fragment it should be something else. But then even with the mutation is should still have an ability to spawn things before being enhance by the fragment"

[Creator, what if its not really spawning but rather an ability to multiply by some beast?]

"I see are you referring to magical beasts that have a high propogate rate?"

[Yes Creator]

"Thats probably it, search in the archive about any beasts that have high reproduction rate"

[Affirmative Creator]

"Now lets scan this thing"

Apollo and Jeremiah needed data so they can plan their next move, so to do that Apollo began chanting. It was a spell he just synthesis between the spell from the Ocean tower and Mahika.

A silent spel began crouching onto the ground and towards the target. Apollo was very careful even use his stat points as boost to make sure that the spell will go unnoticed. And for now he didn't dare use any authorities since he rembered how the unknown Creature ignore its effects. If he were to use it recklessly and found out late that this beast is similar to the previous one, then it might do something that might increase the current horde that the continent is facing.

The spell was release and slowly scan the unknown enemy.

"Hmmm?"

For a moment Apollo look confused as he forwarded to Jeremiah the results.

"Seriously, its a rat?"

Its a DNA similar to a certain species of rat but thats not all, it was a mess up careture that makes it harder fofr Apollo to completelu indentify it. So with no toher options he decided to scan it again, trying to see if he could get anything.

"If the rat part is hte dominant part of this beast that perhaps i could use it to kill it easily" ith that thought he scan it more throughly.

So for the next few moments he remained completely suspended in the air.

Everything was very silent for a while but then he unknown beast began moving. Its grotesque muscles began to move attracting Apollo's attention. The beast let out a muffled thrum deep breathing, almost resonant, like a distorted heartbeat echoing through the.

Apollo looked at itwith disgust part of it is that he doesn't know where the nose is despite having the sound of breathing.

Its massive, malformed limbs twitched unnaturally, pushing blood slicked dirt aside as more of the light emerged from its grotesque mouth.

Jeremiah's voice sounded again, his voice clear as if been enlighten.

> [Creator. I have found a likely match. The base species of this creature may have been the Blood Rat Broodmot a type of beast known for high propagation through parthenogenesis. Normally, they produce offspring once per lunar cycle... this one is releasing them every few seconds.]

"Then the Fragment is amplifying that ability… forcing it into an uncontrollable overdrive," Apollo muttered.

He hovered just out of reach, cloaked in space magic. The corrupted Broodmother didn't seem aware of him—its mind too warped, its instincts overridden by its directive: spawn, consume, repeat.

Apollo raised his hand. His mechanical armor hissed, and five arcane rings formed behind his back—sigils of his internal circuits fully activating.

> [Warning: Energy fluctuation inside the beast. Mana pulse increasing exponentially.]

The creature suddenly reared its body, twitching violently, before vomiting a surge of mutated spawn directly into the horde below. They crawled and screeched, clawing their way toward the fortress like a flood.

Apollo's eyes narrowed.

"I can't allow this to continue."

He extended his palm forward. Lightning surged, not to attack—but to tag each of the newly born monsters with a tracking rune. Within seconds, hundreds lit up on his mental radar.

> [Tracking complete. All tagged. But Creator… the numbers are accelerating.]

"That confirms it. If this thing isn't stopped, we'll never outpace the horde, no matter how many soldiers we deploy."

His clone back at the fortress was already rallying the defenses. Mechanical soldiers fired heavy plasma bolts while Alicia's command of fire weaved death across the battlefield. Even with their combined might, the tides were shifting again.

Apollo turned away from the spawning beast.

"I need to report this. Jeremiah—link all my copies. Transfer this data to the main tower. Let Arthur and Sir Gavin see the true source."

> [Transmitting now. Connection secure. Target lock confirmed.]

"And begin recalculating a focused ether-burst. I'm going to dismantle that core. But not yet... I want them to see this first."

He turned to leave—only for the beast to suddenly pause.

Then, it looked up.

No eyes, no mouth in its twisted skull—but somehow, it had felt Apollo's presence.

It screamed.

The sound was hollow, and reality distorted at the edges of the clearing. The snow twisted, then froze midair. The beasts below froze too—then turned, hundreds of them, shifting focus toward Apollo's position.

A chase had begun.

---

Back at the Fortress

Alicia's flames dimmed, her breathing slightly ragged as she looked toward the north ridge.

{Apollo, what the hell is happening over there? I just felt everything freeze for a second.}

"I think it saw me."

{What? You were supposed to remain cloaked!}

"I was. I think the Fragment is learning. It's adapting. Jeremiah and I are pulling out now. Just keep the line stable until I get back."

> [Reinforcements from the Ivory Tower are approaching. Ten battalions of mage-knights. Estimated arrival: 8 minutes.]

"They better be fast."

---

In the Forest

Apollo dove through the trees, his space layer warping violently as dozens of corrupted beasts broke through it.

A volley of dark ice bolts shattered trees behind him. Apollo spun midair, flicking a glowing disc—a Gravity Surge Mine—which detonated in a pulse that flattened the landscape. The pursuing monsters were crushed under invisible pressure.

But still more followed.

He flicked his hand, activating the emergency escape sequence. A spell-circle opened under him. He vanished—teleporting just above the fortress wall.

Snow and blood blew in the wind.

Jeremiah spoke once more.

> [Creator, the towers are decoding the core structure. Sir Gavin requests immediate strategy alignment.]

Apollo nodded.

"Good. Because now we know."

He looked to the sky—still dim, still snowing, and far from peaceful.

"But this time… we fight with purpose."
