Chapter 7: The Past That Haunts Me
Noah sat at his desk.
The hum of the classroom surrounded him—pens scratching against paper, chairs shifting, quiet murmurs blending into the usual chaos of a school morning.
"Dude, did you finish the homework?"
"Crap, I totally forgot! Lend me your notes before Mr. Hayes gets here!"
A chair scraped against the floor.
"Ugh, I hate Mondays."
The dull white walls were lined with old posters, their edges curling from years of neglect. The ceiling fan creaked overhead, stirring the faint scent of chalk dust and worn textbooks. Sunlight streamed through the windows, casting warm streaks across the floor.
A ball of crumpled paper flew across the room.
"Hey!"
Noah glanced up as a group of students snickered in the back.
Everything felt... normal.
Too normal.
'What…?'
This was his classroom. The same old, boring classroom he had spent years in.
He knew this place.
'But why…'
'...Does it feel weird?'
He glanced to his side and saw Sarah and Adam sitting beside him.
Adam was flipping through his notebook, tapping his pen against the desk, while Sarah rested her chin on her hand and staring blankly at the front of the class.
Noah blinked. 'I… I'm back?'
His heart pounded.
"Noah."
'But wasn't I..'
"Noah!"
'...Somewhere else..?"
"NOAH!!"
Noah's head jerked up as he snapped out of his thoughts
"H-huh?"
Sarah looked at him in confusion. "You good, Noah? You're spacing out again."
Noah swallowed before forcing himself to speak.
"I… yeah. am just… tired."
'Tired?'
'No.'
'That isn't right.'
Something was wrong. He could feel it.
Adam chuckled, shaking his head. "No surprise there. You never pay attention in class anyway."
Sarah smirked and stared at him. "Maybe he's daydreaming about that one girl again."
Noah frowned. "What girl?"
She giggled. "You tell me."
Adam laughed along with her.
Noah exhaled, but something still felt off.
His body felt stiff, like something was holding him down.
Sarah leaned closer, nudging his arm. "Come on, lighten up. You're acting all tense."
Noah let out a slow breath, forcing himself to relax. 'Maybe I am just overthinking.'
"Yea I—ARGGGHHHH!!!"
A sharp, blinding pain tore through his chest.
His body jerked forward as an overwhelming pressure pinned him in place.
A sword had pierced through his back, its cold steel jutting out from his chest.
Warmth spread across his shirt, the fabric darkening to a deep crimson.
His lips parted, but no sound came out, blood pooling at the corner of his mouth.
Slowly... painfully... he turned his head.
Jason stood behind him with a twisted smirk stretched across his face.
"Did you really think we'd let you get away, freak?"
Jason's grip on the sword tightened.
Then...
"A-AAAGH!!!"
Noah let out a choked scream and his body started convulsing from the unbearable pain.
The classroom noise had vanished.
Screech..Thud. Thud. Thud.
Desks scraped against the floor as his classmates stood, moving in unison to form a perfect circle around him.
Seeing this scene, Noah's blood ran cold.
Their faces were blank.
their cold, empty eyes locked onto him, devoid of emotion.
His breath came in ragged, panicked gasps.
"Y-you guys—?"
No one reacted.
They just... stared.
Sarah tilted her head slightly, studying him like a specimen under a glass case.
Adam sighed, tapping his pen against the desk like nothing had happened.
Then, in a voice so calm it made Noah's stomach drop—
"Because you're a monster, Noah."
Noah's eyes widened.
Sarah's eyes darkened as she looked down at him coldly. "It was always going to end like this."
'What...was?'
Then—
In chilling unison, the entire class spoke.
"For the world's sake… please die."
Noah's body trembled. His vision blurred, the pain drowning out everything else.
'No.. no, this isn't real...'
'Sarah.. Adam.. they wouldn't.. They're my friends.'
His lips barely moved. "I.. I'm still me.."
"..."
"..."
Sarah didn't blink. Adam said nothing.
Jason let out a low chuckle. "Doesn't matter."
SHHKK!
"AAAAGGGHHH!"
The blade tore free from his chest. He collapsed on the floor and blood started pooling beneath him.
His arms shook as he weakly reached out. '
'Please... Someone...'
Sarah and Adam didn't move. Their empty eyes stared down at him.
His strength slowly faded and his arms dropped to the floor.
The classroom slowly blurred into a darkness.
But before his vision completely faded—
He saw his classmates grinning. Row after row of wicked, gleeful smiles stretched across their faces.
"YOU DESERVE TO DIE!"
"HAHAHAHAHA!"
Laughter filled his ears.
It grew louder.
And louder..
Until—
"Gaaah!!" Noah jolted awake, his whole body drenched in sweat.
"HOLY SHIT!" Zayne flinched so hard he nearly fell off the bed, barely catching himself on the sheets at the last second.
His eyes snapped to Noah. "What the hell is wrong with—" He stopped mid-sentence.
Noah sat frozen, hunched over, his hands trembling. A tear slipped down his cheek. Then another.
Zayne frowned and got up, stepping closer. "...Had a bad dream?"
"..."
Noah didn't respond. His fingers clutched the sheets so tightly his knuckles turned white. His breaths were uneven, ragged.
Zayne hesitated before moving closer. He reached out carefully. "Hey—"
Noah flinched violently, curling into himself, gripping his arms so tight it looked like he was bracing for something.
"I'm sorry. I'm sorry. Please don't hurt me."
Zayne's breath caught in his throat. His whole body stiffened. 'What the hell…?'
This wasn't just some nightmare. This was something deeper—something that had left scars far worse than any wound.
"Noah..." He tried again, softer this time. "What are you—"
Noah suddenly clutched Zayne's shirt, burying his face against his chest.
Zayne stiffened. "Who—hey—"
"...Please." Noah's voice cracked. "Please don't leave me…"
Zayne swallowed hard. 'What the hell did he even dream about to break down like this…?'
He let out a slow breath. "I'm not going anywhere, alright? Just... just breathe."
Noah's grip didn't loosen. His breathing remained uneven, like his body was still trapped in some invisible terror.
His voice was muffled against Zayne's chest. "It was them..."
Zayne frowned. "Them?"
Noah's fingers tightened even more.
"Adam… Sarah… all of them. They—" His throat closed up. "They called me a monster. They stabbed me. They... they laughed."
Zayne didn't say anything.
Noah's shoulders shook harder. "They left me. Everyone left me."
"I was alone. I... I thought I'd wake up. But I didn't. They just… kept laughing. Over and over. Like I deserved it."
Zayne felt something cold settle in his gut.
Noah was still shaking. Still gripping onto him like he was the only thing keeping him from falling apart completely.
"And the worst part...?" Noah took a shaky breath. "A part of me… started believing them."
Zayne exhaled sharply. "Well, they're not here now, are they?"
Noah didn't respond.
Zayne sighed. "I don't know what the hell happened to you, and I won't act like I do."
He met Noah's gaze, running a hand through his hair before letting out a slow breath.
"But whatever it was, it's over. Right now, you're here. And you're not alone."
Noah's lip trembled slightly, but he stayed quiet.
Zayne leaned back a little, gazing at the window. "You think you're the only one who's been left behind?"
He let out a dry chuckle.
"Hate to break it to you, but you're not special in that."
Noah looked up at him with teary eyes.
Zayne tilted his head. "People leave. They betray. They abandon. That's just how it is."
"..."
"But you know what?" Zayne's lips curled into a small smirk. "Screw them."
Noah blinked.
"If they couldn't see your worth—if they thought you were some monster or whatever bullshit they fed you—then they were never worth a damn to begin with."
Zayne stretched his arms, yawning. "Besides, who gives a damn what they think? You're still breathing, aren't you?"
"Ha… barely."
Zayne smirked. "Then prove them wrong." His voice lowered. "Or better yet... prove them right."
His sharp blue eyes met Noah's.
"If they already see you as a monster, don't waste time trying to convince them otherwise."
He got up from the bed and clenched his fist.
"Make them regret it. Make them choke on their own damn words. If the world insists you're something to be feared, then be the nightmare they never wake up from."
He grinned. "Tear down their expectations, rip apart their arrogance... and when they finally realize how wrong they were..."
He smirked and his fangs shone from sunlight. "...Step over their broken pride and keep walking."
His voice grew bolder as he went on, his gestures becoming more dramatic.
"SHOW THEM STRENGTH! MAKE THEM BEG FOR MERCY! MAKE THEM WISH THEY HAD NEVER...COUGH!COUGH!"
He suddenly choked, pounding his chest. "Ahem—" He wiped his watering eyes. "Damn. Got a little too into it."
"Pfft—"
Noah suddenly laughed.
Zayne blinked. "Wait. Are you laughing?"
Noah covered his mouth, shaking his head. His shoulders trembled, but he couldn't stop.
"Oi. I just gave you the most badass speech of your life, and you're laughing?"
Noah wiped at his eyes, trying to catch a breath. "S-Sorry, it's just... pfft—you looked way too into it."
"Tch. Would've been better if you just cried again."
Hahahahaha!" Noah burst into laughter even harder."
Zayne rolled his eyes but couldn't hide the small smirk tugging at his lips.
Noah finally calmed down, taking a deep breath.
"T-Thank you, Zayne."
"Hmph. It's fine."
Zayne turned away, scratching his cheek, his face slightly red.
The room fell into silence before Zayne suddenly clapped his hands together.
"Alright, enough of this emotional crap. The entrance exam's gonna start soon, so let's hurry up before we get left behind."
Noah groaned. "Ugh.. I already feel exhausted just thinking about it."
Zayne looked down at his wrinkled, slightly damp shirt. "Tch. Thanks to you, this thing's ruined."
Noah smirked. "Well, look on the bright side. Now it matches your personality."
"What? Annoyingly charismatic?"
"No, A complete mess."
"You little—"
Zayne attempted to smack Noah on the back of the head, but Noah dodged it and continued laughing as he slipped past him.
"Hey! Get back here, you bastard! I swear to the Demon King, If I fail the entrance exam because of your bullshit, I'm making you pay for it—WITH YOUR LIFE!"
Noah grinned as he stepped through the doorway.
"Oh, and just so you know... I still don't swing that way."
Zayne froze mid-step. Then, very slowly his head turned toward Noah.
Noah barely had a second to react before Zayne launched his boot straight at him.
"GET OUT!"
