Chapter 6: Where the Weak Get Devoured
Standing before the massive city gates, towering over twenty meters high, Noah let out a breath.
Zayne pointed ahead. "Look, we made it. Welcome to Rhaegis City."
Beyond the gate, demons of all shapes, sizes, and colors moved in and out. Some had horns, others tails, wings, extra limbs—every kind of variation imaginable.
Noah stared, his eyes turning watery. "Finally…"
Zayne smirked. "Heh. Getting emotional already? Come on, let's get in."
He joined the waiting line, and Noah quickly followed.
After five minutes, it was their turn.
Standing before them were two massive bull-headed demons, towering three meters tall. Thick iron-plated armor covered their hulking bodies, and long, sharp spears rested in their hands. One of them stepped forward, blocking their path with the end of his spear.
"Five silver."
Zayne reached into a small pouch, pulled out the coins, and handed them over. Noah quickly followed suit.
The guard gave them a long look before stepping aside. "Welcome to Rhaegis City."
As they stepped through the gates, Noah's jaw dropped.
"Woah… this place is incredible!"
The city stretched before them, bustling with life. Stone buildings with intricate carvings lined the cobblestone streets, towering structures with curved, gothic-like designs mixed in with more traditional medieval architecture. Dimly lit lanterns hung from storefronts, giving off a soft glow.
Smoke drifted from open food stalls, the scent of sizzling meat and spices filling the air.
The crowd was a mix of merchants, armored warriors, cloaked figures, and creatures Noah had never seen before.
Zayne chuckled, arms crossed. "You look like you've never seen a city before."
Noah nodded eagerly. "It's just… different. Seeing it in person is completely unreal."
Zayne smirked. "Well, enjoy it. We have time to explore. The entrance exams are tomorrow, so we're free for the rest of the day."
Noah grinned. "Yes! I want to see everything!"
And so, they wandered through the city, weaving through the busy streets.
Food stalls lined the roads, filling the air with the sizzle of roasting meat and the aroma of rich spices.
Vendors called out to passing customers, their voices overlapping in the lively atmosphere.
"Freshly grilled rock lizard! Crispy on the outside, tender on the inside!"
"Spiced Emberfruit! One bite will set your mouth on fire—but in a good way!"
"Wild boar skewers! Smoked to perfection!"
Noah's gaze flickered around, taking it all in.
The streets were bustling, energetic, and full of life. The shops, the food, the towering buildings—it all looked so... normal.
'This place… it's just like a human city.'
It wasn't the dark, chaotic wasteland people always imagined. The novel had hinted at it, but seeing it firsthand was something else entirely.
There were trading districts, entertainment hubs, even street performers. The demons weren't just rampaging monsters—they had homes, businesses, a civilization.
His fingers instinctively brushed against the pouch at his waist.
'I should probably get something to eat while we explore…'
"Zayne, you hungry?"
"Isn't it obvious?"
Noah eyed him happily. "Then lets dig in."
Noah and Zayne got two skewers of boar meat and started eating.
"It's delicious." Noah's eyes opened wide.
"I know, right?" Zayne nodded his head while taking a big bite.
"Much better than your beef jerky."
Zayne pointed his skewers at Noah and shouted.
Hey! Mmf— I gavuh foo' an' 'ish how ya repay me? Y'ain' geh'n' 'nymore nexshtime
"Stop talking with your mouth full!"
"Vuhhh!"(Noo!) Zayne waved his skewer dismissively, still chewing.
Noah rolled his eyes. "I swear, watching you eat makes me lose my appetite."
Zayne smirked as he finally swallowed. "Good. More for me."
"You—"
BOOOOOM!
A deep, thunderous noise echoed through the air. The ground trembled slightly beneath them.
Noah and Zayne froze.
"What the hell was that?"
Noah turned toward the direction of the sound.
Zayne's playful expression faded, his grip tightening on his bow.
"Something bad."
They turned a corner, and the sight before them came into view—a crowd had gathered in the middle of the street.
Two demons stood in the center, glaring daggers at each other.
One was a hulking figure with deep crimson skin and jagged black horns, his fists clenched at his sides. The other was leaner, with dark gray skin, a pair of curved horns, and sharp yellow eyes brimming with arrogance.
"You got a damn death wish?" The crimson-skinned demon growled, cracking his knuckles.
The leaner one scoffed, dusting off his shoulder like the contact was beneath him. "Tch. Watch where you're going next time."
Noah blinked. "Wait… they're fighting over that?"
"Yeah." Zayne sighed, leaning against a post.
"Demons are proud and hotheaded. Bump into the wrong guy, and you get this." He gestured lazily toward the brewing fight.
"You think they'll actually start throwing hands over something so stupid?"
As if answering Noah's question—
CRACK!
A fist smashed into the lean demon's face, sending him stumbling backward.
The crowd roared in excitement.
"WOOHOOO! Beat the shit out of that guy!!"
"Not again.."
Zayne whistled. "Yup. There it is."
The gray-skinned demon wiped his mouth, a trickle of black blood smearing across his fingers.
He grinned, his fangs glinting. "You're gonna regret that."
Without another word, he lunged.
Noah watched as the two demons clashed, their blows sending shockwaves through the air. The crowd cheered, jeered, and placed bets.
"This is... normal?" Noah got confused.
"Very."
"Shouldn't someone… I don't know, stop them?"
Zayne gave him a sideways glance. "Why? It's entertainment."
Noah stared at him.
Zayne shrugged. "Besides, no one's stopping them because they're demons. Here, strength settles everything. You piss someone off, you better be strong enough to deal with the consequences."
Noah glanced back at the fight.
One demon would walk away. The other wouldn't.
'I am wrong, this place isn't as peaceful as I thought it would be.' Noah took a deep breath as he watched the fight unfold.
"Had enough?" The crimson-skinned demon grinned, blood dripping from his knuckles.
He barely looked winded, while the grey-skinned demon was on one knees, panting heavily.
The gray demon spat out black blood, glaring up at him.
"Fuck.. you.."
CRUNCH!
A brutal kick to the face sent him sprawling onto the ground. His body twitched for a moment before it stilled.
Noah stiffened.
"Wait... is he—?"
Before he could finish the thought, the crimson demon crouched over the motionless body.
Then..
CHOMP!
He sank his teeth straight into the corpse's shoulder, tearing out a chunk of flesh.
"UGHH! What the hell?!"
Noah's stomach twisted violently. His whole body recoiled.
Zayne, however , remained completely unfazed.
"Yeah, that happens too."
Noah gawked at him. "What do you mean, 'that happens'?! He's eating him! He just fucking killed him and now he's chewing on him like it's normal!"
Zayne gave him a strange look, tilting his head slightly. "Why are you so shocked? You're acting weird. This is how we grow stronger."
Noah had no response for that.
'Shit! I know this is how demons act, but it's hard to get used to. I've already used 'Devour' and that worked, but actually eating someone like that…'
Zayne crossed him arms, watching with mild interest. "Strength is everything here."
His gaze then locked onto Noah. "And the weak don't just lose." His lips curled into a smirk. "They get consumed."
Noah swallowed hard, his eyes flicking back to the crimson demon.
The beast-like figure let out a satisfied growl, tearing off another chunk of flesh, black blood dripping from his teeth.
Noah clenched his fists. 'I have to get stronger. Fast.'
The crimson beast finally finished eating his meal, leaving nothing but bones in a heap at his feet.
He then pounded his fist against his chest, his voice booming through the square.
"I, Varkoz, stand undefeated!"
"VARKOZ!"
"VARKOZ!"
The crowd erupted, voices rising in wild cheers.
"He's a monster! That was over in seconds!"
"He just ripped that guy apart like nothing!"
"Tch.. Lucky bastard." someone muttered under their breath. "If i had gotten the first hit, that would've been me standing there."
"Yeah right." another scoffed. "You'd be the one getting eaten instead."
Zayne licked the last bits of flavor off his skewer before tossing it aside.
"Well, that was entertaining. But the show's over. Let's go."
Noah gave a crimson demon one last glance, his gaze lingering on these bloodstained teeth.
"Yeah. That'd be better."
Without another word, the two turned away, moving further into the city.
Zayne stretched his arms. "We need to find an inn. It's already evening."
Noah glanced at the sky, the deep red hue darkening into the night.
"Alright. So where's the nearest inn."
Zayne scanned the area before pointing ahead. "There. Zakery's Inn."
Noah followed his gaze to a small stone building nestled between larger structures.
The walls were dark and slightly worn, cracks running along the edges, but a sturdy wooden sign hung above the entrance, engraved with the name Zakery's Inn.
A faint yellow glow seeped from the windows, giving the place a somewhat inviting look compared to the rest of the city's harsh surroundings.
Noah raised a brow. "Looks decent enough."
"Better than sleeping outside." Zayne said, already walking toward the entrance.
As they pushed the door open, a small bell chimed, signaling their arrival.
Behind the counter, a pink-skinned demon woman stood, her tail flicking lazily as sharp pink eyes assessed them.
"Welcome to Zakery's Inn. How may I help you?"
Zayne pulled a few silver coins from his pouch and placed them on the counter.
"One room. Two beds. One night."
The woman took the coins, barely sparing them another glance before reaching under the counter. A second later, she placed a rusted iron key in front of them.
"Room's upstairs. Second door on the right."
Zayne grabbed the key, flashing her a grin. "Appreciate it."
She gave a slight nod. "Enjoy your stay."
Without further delay, the two made their way up the creaky wooden staircase.
Noah pushed the door open, stepping into a small, modest room.
Two single beds sat against opposite walls, a dim glowstone fixed onto the ceiling, casting a faint light over the simple wooden furniture.
Zayne wasted no time. He dropped onto his bed with a groan, stretching out like he had been carrying the weight of the world.
"Aghh… finally. So relaxing."
Noah sat on his bed, pulling out his pouch. "How much do I owe you?"
Zayne yawned, waving him off. "Don't worry about it."
"But—"
"SNOREEEEEE!"
"Huh?" Noah blinked.
He leaned slightly to the side, watching Zayne sprawled across the bed, already fast asleep.
"Are you serious? He's already asleep?"
Noah sighed, rubbing his temple. "Unbelievable."
But exhaustion weighed on him too.
He yawned, laying back on the mattress.
"Guess I'll worry about it tomorrow…"
His eyes shut, and sleep took him over.
