I Became Robin?! (Honkai Star Rail)

Chapter 38: Chapter 38: Dimensional Rift Veil (6)

Now, everything depended on the killer's nerve. Knowing that Robin had identified them as human within just one night and a morning would undoubtedly put immense pressure on them, making them even more wary of her.

At this moment, Robin was grateful for her ability to bestow "buffs" on her enemies. This killer would undoubtedly be exceptionally calm, driven by logic rather than emotion, and unlikely to act rashly. In other words, they wouldn't strike unless they were absolutely certain of success.

To put it bluntly, Robin was gambling with her life. She was betting the killer wouldn't dare to act. If they did... she would die to prove her point.

"Now, all that's left is to wait," Robin muttered to herself, twirling a strand of her hair. "I hope the Qingcheng Bureau of Anomalous Investigations can hurry up."

Time drifted by, and evening soon arrived. Robin's "confession" that the killer was human, not a monster, had emboldened many to emerge from their hiding places in the hot pot restaurant and supermarket. Groups of people ventured out to nearby stores for food and drinks, or simply gathered in the streets to chat and enjoy the evening breeze—anything to relieve the monotony of staying cooped up.

So far, no one had reported any disappearances. At eight o'clock that evening, Robin counted the group again, confirming that no one had died. It seemed her strategy was working.

However, she knew that tonight, while everyone slept, would likely be her most vulnerable moment. If the killer was determined to launch a desperate attack, there would be no better opportunity than this. Robin turned to Cheng Hui and the other four members of her group, outlining a plan for rotating night watches.

"Keep a close eye on your surroundings," she instructed. "If anyone suddenly stands up and approaches us, wake me immediately." Notably, Robin wasn't whispering conspiratorially; she spoke in a normal voice, making no attempt to conceal her words.

Unsurprisingly, many nearby people overheard her. This was precisely her intention: if the killer heard her warning, it would likely deter them from attacking during the night.

"Well, I'm going to rest now," Robin said to the others. She laid her head on the table and closed her eyes. Unless she was exceptionally unlucky—if the killer happened to be one of the six people in her group on night watch, or if they were desperate enough to risk a suicidal attack despite the circumstances—she was probably safe.

Robin woke up precisely at four in the morning, her shift to take over the night watch.

Resting her chin on her hand, she gazed out at the unchanging landscape. "Has it really only been a day and two nights?"

Since the Dimensional Rift appeared and the veil fell, it felt like an eternity had passed. But upon closer reflection, the time hadn't been that long at all.

Feeling restless, Robin let her mind wander as she surveyed her surroundings.

The group's reluctance to openly confront each other and the absence of nighttime attacks suggested the killer might not be particularly strong. Perhaps she could devise a plan to lure them out—it wouldn't be difficult.

Robin considered her "ultimate move": singing a song to fully amplify the strength of the ordinary people. Could she rally everyone to swarm and capture the killer?

But she shook her head, dismissing the idea. In a way, it would be gambling with the lives of innocent bystanders.

Betting her own resources was one thing, but dragging others into the game without their consent felt deeply unethical.

"In the end, I'm still too weak," Robin sighed, glancing at the System. The Songstress objective's completion rate had reached 5%. Despite her recent disappearance from the internet, her previously released songs continued to spread rapidly, and her popularity had surged.

If only I could go online and see how much my fan base has grown.

Just as Robin finished sighing, she suddenly felt a slight tremor in the ground. Shaking off her earlier drowsiness, she instantly snapped to full alertness.

The sensation was all too familiar—identical to the one she'd felt when the Dimensional Rift had first appeared.

Robin abruptly looked out the window. The once-impenetrable black veil was dissipating from the top down, like a punctured balloon. Within seconds, it had completely vanished, revealing the stars and moon in the night sky above.

"The veil is gone?!" Immediately, she heard hurried footsteps. Four uniformed agents from the Bureau of Anomalous Investigations came sprinting down the street, only to freeze in their tracks upon seeing the overcrowded supermarket and hot pot restaurant.

"What... what's going on here?" The young girl leading the group had long, snow-white hair, blue eyes, and a pair of cat ears perched atop her head. She couldn't help but look utterly bewildered.

In truth, the Bureau of Anomalous Investigations had suspected that this situation might resemble the previous Dimensional Rift Incident as soon as the Veil descended.

During that earlier incident, a "Hunter"—akin to the "Wolf" in a game of Werewolf, or the "Killer" Robin had described—would appear within the area shrouded by the Veil. This "Killer" possessed an extraordinary weapon: each time they pierced someone with it, the victim would instantly die and vanish, leaving only their clothes behind as proof of their existence.

With each kill, the "Killer's" physical abilities would increase, as if they were draining the life force of their victims.

It's worth noting that, much like the Fancheng Virus, the "Killer" could only grow stronger by eliminating people within the Veil, and their unique weapon was effective only against those trapped inside.

A spatially fixed arena, a crowd of strangers, and a killer who leaves almost no trace behind—these conditions undoubtedly favored the Killer immensely.

In such a situation, most ordinary people would naturally be terrified and likely seek refuge in a hidden place.

Of course, there might be a few who, overwhelmed by fear, would lose their sanity and act irrationally, creating chaos that would only further aid the Killer.

In essence, the Killer's strategy likely involved: initially lurking among the crowd to stealthily dispatch victims; transitioning to unrestrained slaughter as their power grew; and finally, playing hide-and-seek to hunt down any remaining survivors.

Normally, the Veil would automatically lift when only one survivor remained. However, due to the previous Dimensional Rift Incident, the Bureau of Anomalous Investigations had gained some understanding of the Veil. After working tirelessly for two days and nights, they finally managed to open it from the outside.
