Chapter 43: Kuroko's Obsession
"Hm? What's wrong?" Selene looked at Misaka Mikoto with a puzzled expression. "Do we know each other?"
"You... you!" Electric arcs began crackling from Misaka Mikoto's forehead as she was on the verge of losing her temper.
"Okay, okay, don't damage public property. I was just teasing you," Selene quickly raised her hands in surrender, signaling she wouldn't tease her anymore.
"You traitor, why didn't you warn me?"
"I didn't want to interrupt your bonding with Kuroko. Look at you..."
"Shut up! It's all Kuroko's fault!" Misaka Mikoto angrily interrupted Selene's teasing.
"Okay, okay, here, these are for you." As Misaka Mikoto glared at Shirai Kuroko, the clinking of metal cans could be heard, and Selene handed them two canned drinks.
"Ah, thank you..." Misaka Mikoto instinctively accepted the drink, but when she touched it, she shivered and looked at Selene in shock. "It's hot?"
After looking at the drink's label, she was speechless, "Green... green bean soup?"
"Uh... this..." Misaka Mikoto looked at the steaming green bean soup with a face of despair. "Why is it hot... in this sweltering weather..." She looked at Selene questioningly, hoping for an explanation.
"Drinking hot beverages in hot weather is healthier, right?" Selene smiled lightly. "And isn't green bean soup supposed to clear heat and relieve summer heat? It also boosts metabolism."
"Honestly, what kind of retirement lifestyle is this? You're still young; young people today should drink cold drinks." Although she said this, Misaka Mikoto obediently drank it.
Regarding this matter, Selene couldn't help but complain. Academy City's technological level is indeed fifty years ahead of the outside world on average, but this advancement covers various aspects, including people's daily lives. However, advancements aren't always good, just like the drinks here.
Perhaps due to the influence of Academy City's scientific atmosphere, all restaurants within the city seemed to share the researchers' fervor for experimentation.
This led to the vending machines providing various bizarre drinks and foods, seemingly treating students' stomachs as testing grounds. Many strange drinks and foods were invented.
Ignoring strange foods, even the drinks, like the legendary "bitter melon natto vegetable juice," "eel energy drink," and "kimchi mixed flavor drink," could be called the "dark cuisine" of beverages.
Compared to those concoctions, regular market drinks, like passion fruit energy drinks and cherry cola, seem normal, at least drinkable by carbon-based life forms.
But this phenomenon isn't entirely bad; it just tends to extremes. Products either taste bad or are dangerously throat-clogging.
Take Selene's green bean soup, for example. The taste is acceptable, tasting like ground green beans with sugar, with decent ingredients.
Maybe I should ask Shuji Matsuzaki to develop these things...
Just as Selene's thoughts wandered like a wild horse galloping through a field, a commotion snapped her back to reality.
"Onee-sama! Would you like to drink Kuroko's share..."
Alright, Kuroko's at it again.
There's a saying that if it tastes bad, drink it quickly; if I drink fast enough, my taste buds can't catch up. Misaka Mikoto did just that, not wanting to waste Selene's kindness, and drank the hot green bean soup.
"Drink it yourself!" Pressing Shirai Kuroko down, Misaka Mikoto side-kicked the empty can into the trash, ignoring the stunned onlookers.
"Ah~ even though hot drinks don't feel summery, they unexpectedly relieve heat."
Her safety shorts were exposed again, much to Shirai Kuroko's dismay as she covered her face in disappointment, muttering, "Wearing such tasteless things under her skirt again..."
"Onee-sama's taste is concerning. As Tokiwadai's ace, she should be aware of her image, yet she wears disappointing shorts. The underwear I showed Onee-sama was so fashionable, with black lace and... sheer lace... hehe~"
"There's no way I'd wear such underwear, Kuroko. Only a pervert like you would wear that," Misaka Mikoto retorted angrily.
"This has nothing to do with being a pervert, Onee-sama. This is fashion, fashion." With a hint of despair, Shirai Kuroko rebutted in her sweet, clingy voice.
Selene got goosebumps from Kuroko's saccharine voice; there's no way she could sound like that.
"Honestly, even if Onee-sama can't accept such trendy outfits, she shouldn't wear such boring things. Can't she learn from Selene-senpai?"
"Cough, cough..." Selene almost choked on her drink at the remark. Why is she dragging me into this?
Unlike Misaka Mikoto, Selene didn't wear safety shorts but wore "leggings."
The influence from her past life made her uncomfortable with skirts, always feeling chilly down there, so clever Selene came up with the idea of wearing leggings like pants, conveniently solving the problem of exposed skin.
Such a perfect solution, Selene couldn't help but give herself a mental pat on the back.
As Shirai Kuroko steered the conversation further off course, the atmosphere became increasingly awkward, and Saten Ruiko and Uiharu Kazari were left speechless, their smiles turning awkward.
"Everyone has different tastes; none of your business! And why did my underwear disappear recently..."
"Who knows, maybe a stray cat took it, or perhaps an underclassman who admires Onee-sama stole it... haha..." Kuroko's voice was slightly guilty.
"Wasn't that underclassman you, Kuroko? You're the only one who'd do such things!"
"Onee-sama, you must believe me. I would never do anything so unsophisticated."
"Kuroko, you're suspicious. Why are you sweating so much? Stare~"
Noticing something, Misaka Mikoto trembled with anger, and with a roar, she smashed her fist onto Kuroko's head.
Thud!
Watching Misaka Mikoto bonk Shirai Kuroko on the head again, Selene couldn't help but wonder maliciously, how many times is this now? Maybe that's why Kuroko's computational skills haven't improved much after reaching Level 4.
"Ouch, ouch, ouch." Shirai Kuroko curled up, holding her head in pain, rubbing it repeatedly.
Crackling...
Seeing the scene starting again, the Sakugawa Middle School duo took a step back, clearly indicating, We didn't hear anything, please continue.
