Chapter 20 - Ambition
Now that the medicinal field had improved so significantly, Qin Nan was filled with ambition and wanted to cultivate even more herbs.
After planting all the seedlings he currently had, there was still a sizeable barren area left.
He needed to find more seedlings and turn this plot of land into something uniquely his.
Ambition.
If he could fill the entire field with medicinal herbs, Qin Nan’s plan to develop discreetly and steadily would finally take shape.
Originally, Qin Nan had considered leaving NiuJiao Village with Shangguan Rouyue to join a sect. That way, he wouldn’t have to worry about resources anymore.
However, since Shangguan Rouyue had no intention of leaving and the two of them were now husband and wife, joining a sect was no longer on the table.
Living quietly with Shangguan Rouyue in NiuJiao Village, building their strength slowly while enjoying a free and easy life, wasn’t a bad option at all.
Now that the house had been transformed into a feng shui treasure land by Shangguan Rouyue, cultivating here was just as effective as in any other place.
Why bother working hard elsewhere when he could stay at home, cultivate, and enjoy life with his wife?
…
Recently, Shangguan Rouyue had suddenly taken an interest in studying medicine and frequently sought advice from Qin Nan. Oddly enough, she was only interested in gynecology.
Why?
This had started two days ago when a young village woman came to see Qin Nan about a gynecological issue.
For Qin Nan, whether his patients were men or women, no matter the ailment, he treated everyone equally. Even if it was a curvaceous, attractive woman, he wouldn’t think twice about it.
He was incredibly professional.
After taking her pulse and pressing a few acupuncture points on her abdomen to locate the problem, he quickly diagnosed the issue and completed the treatment.
Qin Nan instructed her to avoid cold and fried foods, handed her two packets of medicine, and told her to boil them at home. She’d be fine in two days.
During the examination, the young woman had looked shy and bashful, as if Qin Nan had taken advantage of her.
From that day on, Shangguan Rouyue began learning medicine—specifically gynecology—and progressed astonishingly quickly.
She absorbed knowledge like a dry sponge soaking up water.
Now, Shangguan Rouyue could handle most gynecological cases on her own.
Whenever a female villager came seeking treatment, Shangguan Rouyue took over, sparing Qin Nan the trouble.
Qin Nan naturally understood his wife’s little concerns and was happy to let her take the lead. This gave him more time to focus on the medicinal field in the backyard.
A one-meter-high fence now surrounded the field to prevent wild animals and strangers from trampling the precious herbs.
Thanks to the bubbling spring that ran through the land, irrigation was effortless.
With fertile soil enriched by the three ley lines, all Qin Nan needed to do was sprinkle some water, and the herbs would thrive.
Looking at the lush and thriving medicinal plants, Qin Nan felt a surge of anticipation.
Sensing something, he looked up and saw a familiar figure passing by in the distance.
It was Yang Xiaoqi, whom he hadn’t seen in several days.
That boy was still so effeminate that one would never guess he was a man from his appearance.
Qin Nan couldn’t help but wonder how Yang Xiaoqi’s parents felt about raising a son who looked more like a daughter. How would their family line continue?
Noticing that Yang Xiaoqi was walking oddly, Qin Nan raised an eyebrow. Was it possible he had also encountered ‘trouble’, like Shangguan Rouyue had previously?
No, probably not. After all, Yang Xiaoqi was a man. Even if trouble had occurred, he would be the one causing it, not the victim.
Though it was hard to imagine Yang Xiaoqi being aggressive in any scenario.
“Xiaoqi!” Qin Nan called out.
Yang Xiaoqi turned around, surprised to see Qin Nan. His expression grew even more astonished when he noticed the transformed medicinal field.
Just days ago, this field had been much smaller with only a few scattered herbs.
Now, its size had doubled, and there was even a flowing spring.
If it weren’t for the unchanged house nearby, Yang Xiaoqi would have thought he was in the wrong place.
Yang Xiaoqi walked closer, his black almond-shaped eyes scanning the changes in the field with wonder.
“Brother Qin Nan, when did you expand the medicinal field so much? Do you need my help?” Yang Xiaoqi asked sweetly.
This kid was still so clever and obedient. It was a pity he wasn’t a girl; otherwise, Qin Nan would have gladly taken him in as a little sister.
“Of course, I could use your help, but only after you recover from your injuries,” Qin Nan replied.
Yang Xiaoqi’s eyes widened slightly, his efforts to conceal his injuries clearly noticed by Qin Nan.
Indeed, Yang Xiaoqi had been injured, though it wasn’t severe and thus wasn’t obvious.
Qin Nan approached and placed his hands on various parts of Yang Xiaoqi’s body, examining him for injuries.
In no time, he completed his assessment—just minor injuries.
For some reason, Yang Xiaoqi’s face flushed, and he looked away, unable to meet Qin Nan’s gaze.
“Now, can you tell me how you got hurt?” Qin Nan asked seriously.
“I… I accidentally fell,” Yang Xiaoqi stammered.
“When did you learn to lie?” Qin Nan frowned.
“I’m not lying…” Yang Xiaoqi replied nervously.
“Don’t even try. I’m a doctor. If I couldn’t tell what caused your injuries, I’d be out of a job,” Qin Nan said sternly.
Hearing this, Yang Xiaoqi lowered his head in shame, looking pitiful.
“Look up. Getting beaten isn’t your fault, so why are you so hesitant to speak? Are you embarrassed?” Qin Nan asked.
“No, I’m sorry. Xiaoqi lied,” Yang Xiaoqi admitted, biting his lip.
Such a delicate, pitiful expression—it was truly endearing. Too bad he was a boy. Qin Nan almost forgot for a moment.
“So, who hit you?” Qin Nan pressed.
“…It was He Qing,” Yang Xiaoqi finally confessed after some hesitation.
“That little village bully? Why did he hit you? You didn’t provoke him, did you?”
“Xiaoqi didn’t…” Yang Xiaoqi replied, his voice filled with grievance.
Qin Nan already knew it couldn’t have been Yang Xiaoqi’s fault. Someone as gentle and kind as Yang Xiaoqi wouldn’t provoke anyone.
He Qing, on the other hand, was notorious in the village for his behavior.
After listening to Yang Xiaoqi’s account, Qin Nan pieced together the situation.
Yang Xiaoqi had crossed paths with He Qing and his gang while they were loitering around.
True to form, He Qing began mocking Yang Xiaoqi for his effeminate appearance, calling him names and even harassing him physically.
When Yang Xiaoqi resisted, he was beaten.
Fortunately, the injuries weren’t severe, as He Qing had held back.
Yang Xiaoqi, feeling humiliated and worried about Qin Nan getting involved, initially lied about the incident.
But Qin Nan wasn’t someone to fear He Qing. In fact, it was more likely the village bully would regret crossing paths with him.
