Chapter 33: Conditions x Spiders x Movements
Should Moro invest time and energy into Haruto Washitora and Callista?
From the moment his match ended until now, Moro had already made up his mind.
He was willing to put in the effort—provided there was something in it for him.
Moro led Haruto and Callista toward the 200th floor.
Upon advancing to the 200th floor, competitors needed to register before midnight that same day. Failing to do so would forfeit their eligibility.
Taking the elevator to the 200th floor, Moro followed the directional signs on the walls toward the registration area.
But before he could walk far, a wave of killing intent swept toward him from ahead.
It wasn't particularly intense, but there was no mistaking that it was directed at him.
Facing the sudden oppressive aura, Moro remained unfazed, continuing forward without hesitation.
The individuals responsible for releasing this killing intent weren't overstepping boundaries; it was merely a mild show of force—a small intimidation tactic.
However—
If Moro weren't a Nen user, this wouldn't have been Nen-enhanced killing intent at all.
After all, to the 200th-floor competitors, a novice ignorant of Nen would be little more than a walking ATM of free victories.
If they encountered such a newcomer, they would eagerly welcome them instead of trying to scare them away.
The smoke-like aura of killing intent emanated from both sides of a corridor corner, filling the passage leading to the registration area.
To Moro, this level of intimidation was as insignificant as air.
For Haruto and Callista, though, it was a completely different story.
Even though they were merely collateral targets, the sensation was like being plunged into an icy, bone-chilling abyss. Every step forward felt as heavy as dragging lead.
But we have to keep moving!
Seeing Moro stride ahead without pause, both Haruto and Callista gritted their teeth and willed themselves to follow, their legs trembling under the weight of the oppressive atmosphere.
Though Moro didn't look back, he could hear their labored breathing.
Not bad, he thought to himself, slowing his pace slightly.
If he were in their position, he wasn't sure he would have done any better.
Soon, they reached the registration hall. Moro swept his gaze across the room.
Several individuals lingered near the vending machines against the walls and at the ends of connecting corridors. All of them had their attention fixed on Moro.
Ignoring the group of opportunistic Nen users, Moro walked straight to the registration desk and, following the receptionist's instructions, completed the necessary forms.
Matches above the 200th floor were scheduled through a request-based system. Competitors could choose any day to fight within a 90-day period.
Moro had no immediate plans to schedule a match. After finishing his registration, he led the now sweat-drenched Haruto and Callista to his newly assigned room.
"How did it feel?" Moro asked once they arrived, glancing at Haruto and Callista, both pale from the experience.
To ordinary individuals, the negative emotions amplified by Nen-infused killing intent felt like an unavoidable mental assault.
Haruto's expression was grave as he replied, "It felt like I couldn't breathe, as if there was a heavy resistance with every step forward."
"I felt the same… like walking underwater," Callista said, wiping the sweat from her neck. She frowned. "Was it those people near the registration desk?"
"Exactly," Moro said calmly. "They were targeting me, not you. But Nen is so inherently threatening to ordinary people that even the residual effects were enough to make you feel immobilized."
"Nen…"
Both Haruto and Callista's eyes lit up.
Their firsthand experience only heightened their desire to understand this mysterious power. At this moment, they were desperate to know if they were capable of learning it.
"Moro, can I—"
"Anyone can learn this power through training," Moro interrupted before they could finish.
His tone then turned serious as he continued, "I can help awaken this power in you, but I have one condition."
"Condition?"
Haruto and Callista both focused intently on him.
Meeting their questioning gazes, Moro said, "I need to kill someone within the next year. That person is extremely powerful. So, while I will teach you Nen, you'll need to help me kill them. This mission could very well cost you your lives."
Moro paused here, carefully watching their reactions. He didn't see even a hint of hesitation.
"Of course…" he added, "If you choose to refuse, that's fine too. I'll still share the basics of Nen with you. But you'll have to figure out how to awaken it on your own."
"I accept!" Callista responded without hesitation, her voice firm.
This time, she was quicker than Haruto.
Haruto followed closely behind. "I accept as well."
To both of them, Moro's willingness to guide them into the world of Nen was tantamount to establishing a master-disciple relationship.
And when a master asked something of their disciples, it was only natural to comply.
"Good," Moro said with a slight smile.
While he knew Haruto better, Moro also thought well of Callista.
His impression of her stemmed from their preliminary match—when Callista, noticing his youth, had deliberately held back on her first attack.
Placing a finger on his chin, Moro mused internally: Haruto is likely an Enhancement type, while Callista is probably an Emission type… but we'll need to use water divination to be sure.
His thoughts shifted. Skipping the lengthy explanations about Nen, he instead asked the two of them a simple question:
"Are you afraid of death?"
Both Haruto and Callista instinctively replied, "No."
Without further ado, Moro forcibly opened their aura nodes.
In an instant, vast quantities of aura surged from Haruto and Callista, spiraling skyward like steam before rapidly dissipating.
"This… this is the power hidden within me!" Haruto exclaimed, his eyes reflecting the bright glow of the aura, uncertain if it was Nen or his own excitement.
Callista, however, stared gravely at the uncontrolled aura flowing from Haruto. "If we don't stop this energy from leaking… we'll die."
Moro stood calmly nearby, watching the scene unfold.
The uncontrolled loss of aura wouldn't actually kill them. However, failing to master Ten quickly enough could lead to prolonged energy depletion and eventual death from overexertion.
The risk was low, but Moro had deliberately used the fear of death to accelerate their learning process.
He didn't have time to waste.
Suddenly, Moro's phone buzzed in his pocket.
Pulling it out, he saw a message from Argo:
The Phantom Troupe has surfaced. They've raided the Navis National Treasure Museum.
"They're making their move…"
Reading the message, Moro's eyes narrowed slightly.
