Chapter 11: 285TH Hunter Exam - Excitement - Chapter 11
He sat back down and grabbed his notebook, the one he had bought from Mel Shop on the first day, and started scribbling.
GOALS:
Master Nen basics (Ten, Ren, Zetsu, and Gyo).
Perform water divination to discover the Nen category.
Begin Hatsu development.
Create an income system (passive or active).
Build influence contacts, a black market, or a bounty board.
Learn the current world timeline.
His pen stopped there.
That last point had become a growing curiosity gnawing at the edge of his thoughts.
So far, he hadn't seen anyone familiar. No mention of famous names.
No whispers of the Phantom Troupe, the Hunter Exam, the Zoldyck family… not even any rumors about Gon or Killua.
"Of course, these could be because of the fact that I am in the Begerosse Union."
If Gon was already a pro Hunter, then the Chimera Ants might already have risen, or worse, Meruem could have already lived and died.
But if this was before all that, Arin might still be in the era where the original events were yet to unfold.
He walked to his bag and pulled out the folded city map.
If he wanted to know where in time he stood, he'd need to look for markers.
News articles. Public events. Dates.
He sat back down and tapped his pen on the notebook.
Where would he find that?
The answer came quickly.
A newspaper stand.
Or a Hunter station. Even a government registry.
Somewhere with printed, dated information.
He nodded to himself, already planning to go out tomorrow morning and locate one.
Once I know the timeline, I'll know what threats are coming. What powers exist? Who's alive? Who's dead?
He closed the notebook and leaned back against
Arin opened the system interface again in his mind.
[SYSTEM INTERFACE – OPEN]

He closed the panel with a thought.
"All the training..."
"I need to rest before going on."
With these thoughts, he went back to the inn and paid 1500 yen for two more days and then went to his bed to sleep.
Seven hours later, at midday, he woke up.
He'd slept enough to clear his fatigue, and after a quick breakfast at a nearby vendor stall a skewer of grilled meat and some flatbread he began wandering.
Unlike the poorer outskirts, the city's heart pulsed with activity and infrastructure.
Banks, tech centers, government buildings, and sleek towers surrounded him.
Then he saw it.
A five-story glass building with a spinning satellite dish mounted on top and a wide digital board that scrolled headlines across its surface.
FALLEN NEWS NETWORK – LIVE COVERAGE DAILY
Bingo.
Arin crossed the street and entered through the revolving doors.
Inside was a massive lobby, lined with polished stone tiles and modern furniture.
He didn't talk to anyone.
Instead, he drifted quietly toward a tall rack of printed papers sitting beside a lounge area near the window.
He grabbed one and took a seat.
There were no security checks.
It seemed the news here was public.
The front page bore the city's seal and the logo of the network.
But it was a single headline in the middle-right column that froze him.
"285TH HUNTER EXAM – PRELIMINARY REGISTRATION OPENING SOON – EXAM STARTS IN THREE MONTHS"
Arin stared at it.
His fingers tightened around the edge of the paper, creasing it slightly.
285th...
A slow smile spread across his face.
He leaned back in the cushioned chair, eyes narrowed.
"Gon and the others… They start with the 287th."
The memory was crystal clear in his mind.
Gon Freecss. Killua Zoldyck. Kurapika. Leorio.
All of them began their story with the 287th Hunter Exam, the start of the original tale.
And that meant...
"There are still two full years until the main story begins."
He exhaled and smiled.
It felt like discovering a gold mine buried beneath his feet.
Two years.
Twenty-four months to train.
Nobody knew his name yet.
He wasn't on anyone's radar.
He folded the paper and tucked it under his arm, standing up and exiting the building without a word.
He could feel it.
The advantage.
With two years to work, he could approach the world from a unique angle.
When Gon, Killua, and the others eventually made waves, he could already be ready.
He wouldn't be following the canon events.
He'd be ahead of them.
"I can use the time," he murmured to himself as he rounded a corner and started heading toward the city's southern district.
"I can master Nen properly. Build a financial network. Maybe even join or create an organization."
"Maybe I should focus on taking down the Terror Sandwich before he learns 'Nen.' That guy is dangerous," he said to himself, smiling and shaking his head.
And if he kept track of events as they unfolded the ones that preceded the original series he could get involved strategically.
But that was long-term thinking.
First things first.
He now knew the year.
