Chapter 46: Chapter 46: End of the First Year
June 8th, 1991, Hospital Wing, 9:00 PM.
Inside the dimly lit room, moonlight shone bright through the stained glass, reflecting two silhouettes, one tall and the other small.
Under the full moon, Ethan's face still carried that gentleness and genuine worry within those dark amber eyes.
On the contrary, Harry's visage was rather grim, his face was still contorted with guilt from what he had done down there.
"Dad, Dad, I-I...Kil-" The boy's lips quivered, his eyes reddened with tears brimming on the edge.
"I know..." Ethan was still as gentle as ever as he patted the boy's head. "It's alright, Harry, he's got what he deserves. That's the price Quirrell had paid for what he wanted." Ethan reassures the trembling Harry.
"You did what you had to... to protect yourself, to protect your friends." Ethan's words resounded within the boy's ears as Harry brought his crying face to meet Ethan's sincere gaze.
"B-but, I ..." Harry was not totally convinced, but at least part of him did find solace in what Ethan had said. His mind began to swirl with contemplation.
Then, they just stayed like that for a while, Harry hugging Ethan tight, burying his face in the man's embrace while Ethan was patting his back.
...
It wasn't long before the boy fell back to sleep.
Seeing that Harry was sleeping peacefully, Ethan gently put the boy back down, tugging the quilt and offering the boy a kiss to the forehead before heading out of the hospital wing.
"Good evening, Mr. Esther. I see that the boy is fine now?" Waiting just outside the wing was an old man who was watching the full moon outside the window.
"He will be fine. Harry is, after all, a Gryffindor... He'll get through this." Ethan walks to the old man's side, looking in his direction.
The old man - Dumbledore's mouth curled up into a smile. "Indeed."
"I must say, Headmaster. This was quite a distinguished test that you crafted." In reply to the old man's smile, Ethan only sent back an indifferent gaze.
That day when he visited Harry for Christmas, upon hearing what the boy told about what he and his friends had found out, all the doubts and bizarre events. As a True Seer, how come Ethan wouldn't have an insight about this!?
With a little bit of digging about Nicolas Flammel, the two peculiar professors in Harry's letter couple with a little bit of Divination. Ethan was able to piece together the whole truth.
Quirrell's plans, the stone, and Voldermont's revival attempt.
The final question was, where was Dumbledore's role in all of this?
Just a few hours ago, when Harry was fighting with Quirrell, the shift in the boy's condition triggered the enchanted pocket watch that Ethan had given him a while ago, which was worn around the boy's neck.
Ethan immediately rushed to the school, following his intuition growing heavier the closer he got. There, he discovered Harry's friends, Draco and Hermione, telling the professors what had happened.
They were surprised to see Ethan, but they soon left that aside as saving Harry was more urgent.
By the time Ethan reached the final room, Harry was unconscious, still holding the stone firm in hand. In front of the mirror was what remained of Professor Quirrell.
Ethan's gaze swept over the room, but he found no trace of the Dark Lord... just as he expected.
Still, with this, he got the answer to his question. The Room, the mirror, Dumbledore's timely absence.
This was the old fox's plan.
As the headmaster of this magical castle, I hold the highest authority over it. There is no way Voldermont and Quirrell's little mischief could get past right under his nose.
Rather, everything was under his control.
Rooms filled with challenges that could make even a fifth-yeae shudder. How come they were designed perfectly to test Harry's group and force Harry to face Voldemort at the end?
"Haha, and they passed with flying colour," Dumbledore said camly
Ethan's gaze turned colder at these words.
"Oh, come now, Mr. Esther. You know very well why I had to prepare them for this. Don't think I didn't know what it meant to give Harry all those extra lessons before school started." Dumbledore let out a slight chuckle.
"Still, you are endangering the children, putting their life at stake; What would happend if something went wrong... if things went out of your control." Ethan retorted monotously.
The old fox just smiles at Ethan's provocation. "I'd said experience is the best teacher." With that said, the headmaster took his leave.
"Oh, and worry not, Mr. Esther. I am... after all, Hogwarts Headmaster, and they too are my students." The old man's silhouette retreated further into the darkness of hallway
Leaving Ethan standing there looking at the man's fading back with contemplation.
Heaving a sigh, Ether turned his gaze toward the full moon, his eyes shone with star-like brilliance for but a moment. The image of a horrendous Snake passed his mind, but with it was the image of the wheel of fate turning in a different direction.
"The time opportunity is near... "
...
The next day, Harry and Ron received a visit from Ron and Draco, who revealed that Slytherin came in first for the House Cup and, with Ron unable to play in the championship Quidditch match, Ravenclaw easily won the match.
Ron was a little sad about it but soon found his joy back with the food Hermione brought over.
The following day, at the end of the term feast, Dumbledore awarded some last-minute points for the recent events.
He gave Ron and Hermione fifty points each, and Harry sixty, which places them in a tie with Slytherin for first place.
Dumbledore then recognised that while it is hard to stand up to enemies, it was even harder to stand up to friends as Neville did, and he awarded Neville 10 more points, which was the most house points Neville had ever gotten.
This put Gryffindor in the lead and the winner of the House Cup, to much rejoicing from everyone but the Slytherins. Not only were Gryffindor students happy, but Hufflepuff and Ravenclaw were happy to see Slytherin's downfall.
However, the quartet wasn't bothered by this as what they had been through down their was what truly mattered. Throughout this event, the four had grown closer than ever.
Soon, their trunks are all packed, and they take the Hogwarts Express back towards the muggle world. Harry, Ron, Draco and Hermione all say their goodbyes before heading home.
