Chapter Text
As we were flying back to the new island, I grew very pissed off at Nanna. Things were calm until she showed up and we all almost died because of it.
I felt Kala begin to rub my head, but I lightly smacked her hand with my earplate to get her to stop, growling slightly as I did. Kala sighed and gripped the saddle in understanding. I huffed and focused on getting back to the island.
After a couple minutes went by, the island came into view and Stormfly and I landed in a clearing. Kala dismounted and I transformed into my human form while glaring at Nanna as I crossed my arms.
Nanna dismounted Stormfly with an apologetic look. "Hiccup I–"
"No! Don't even start. You put all of us in danger Nanna! We could've all been killed back there!" I shouted, a growl forming in the back of my throat.
Kala gripped my arm, but I pulled it out of her hold before she could start dragging me away. "Hiccup just–"
"Kala, don't! I don't want to hurt you!" I growled, which made her go silent and look away as she held herself. My eyes widened and I reached for her. "Kala I didn't mean–"
Before I could finish my sentence though, all of our attention was broken when we heard Ruffnut cheer as she flew past us on a Scuttleclaw.
"Ruffnut?" Nanna asked, confused as the Thorston in question hopped off the Scuttleclaw as it landed and threw her helmet aside.
"Miss me?" Ruffnut asked with a smirk.
"Why were you riding on a Scuttleclaw and not Barf and Belch?" Kala asked with a raised brow.
"I just escaped from Grimmel's armada. Duh. I annoyed them till they let me go." She said with a hand on her hip as if it were obvious.
"Wai-wait…Grimmel LET you go?!" I asked, becoming even more angered than I was before.
"So dumb. They couldn't handle me. See, everyone thinks Tuffnut's more annoying but–"
"RUFFNUT!" I yelled, which got her to shut up and look at me.
"What?"
"He used you to find us! He didn't just let you go!! He followed you!!" I growled, scales forming on my face from how upset I was.
I felt Kala grab my arm worriedly and I looked at her. "Luna followed us back.." She whined out and my eyes widened.
Before I could stop her, Kala transformed into her dragon form and bolted to where Luna was.
"Kala!!" I screeched in fear as I ran after her, but as soon as I got to the clearing, Grimmel already had her and Luna knocked out and chained up to his airship and signaled for his dragons to get higher.
"Now our little game has come to an end." Grimmel said when he noticed me and I growled furiously at him.
All the dragons on the island began to fly towards his airship to protect Kala, but I could tell Grimmel put that into account as he smirked.
"Call them off, Dragon Master!" He shouted as he mounted his harpoon and aimed it at Kala. "No reason for her to die too!"
I glared daggers at the man then roared at the dragons to get them to stop. They listened and hovered in place near the cliff. As the dragons ceased in their pursuit, the other riders rushed over to the clearing.
"What are they doing?" Snotlout asked as he looked at the dragons. "They could totally take him!"
"No! Not with Kala's life on the line! Are you insane?!" I growled as I glared at my cousin.
He raised his arms in surrender and backed away, then I directed my glare back at Grimmel.
Kala whined and struggled in her chains, which made me look at her in worry.
"Awww, don't feel too badly. You tried your best! But, you are nothing without your mate." Grimmel taunted, then he whistled and his dragons began to fly away towards the armada of ships.
All I could see was red as I transformed, but before I could take off I felt multiple people grab my tail. I looked back at the others and growled furiously at them. Fishlegs then smacked me on the head which got me to stop growling.
"Snap out of it, Hiccup! We understand you're upset and very worried right now, but going in blindly is just going to make the situation worse! We need a plan!" Fishlegs shouted.
I huffed and yanked my tail out of everyone's grasp as I transformed into my hybrid form and crossed my arms. I noticed that they were all looking at me expectantly and I motioned for them to say something, indicating that I wasn't in the right mindset and would most likely blow up at them if I even opened my mouth.
"Okay, are we all calm now?" Fishlegs asked and I took a deep breath and nodded. "Good. It's clear that we won't be able to go after Grimmel immediately. Because if we do, then that just leaves the whole armada to continue what he started. If we attack the armada with our dragons first, then that makes it easier to rescue Kala. We have the advantage here, Hiccup." He explained.
I looked towards the armada as I thought over what he said. Fishlegs did have a point. If we took Grimmel out of the equation immediately, that'd just leave an opening for the armada he brought to finish what he started and most likely take all our dragons in the process. Taking the armada out first would be the safest option. I then noticed small boats filled with Trappers coming ashore and I growled slightly under my breath as I turned to the others.
"Alright. We'll send the dragons to deal with the ships. We're going after the Trappers that are on the island, then we'll go from there. Is everyone clear on that?" I asked.
"Umm. How are we gonna get to the Trappers if our dragons are fighting the ships?" Snotlout asked with crossed arms and a raised brow.
I gave him a deadpan look then sighed as I ran a hand through my hair. "Did you forget that you all have synthetic wings in your armor?"
"Wait. So you want us to go after the Trappers with our flight suits? That's the best you got? Why can't we just take our dragons and get it over with?" Ruffnut asked with her hands on her hips.
"Because we don't have time, Ruffnut! That's why! The longer we sit around and talk about this, the more time the enemy has to get to our dragons and take our advantage! So, just do what I told you!" I ordered before I turned to the dragons and roared at them.
The dragons listened and sped down to the armada ships, proceeding to destroy them. I then ran and dived off the cliff, gliding down to the beach the Trappers disembarked. I unsheathed my Inferno and began to fight them off, nothing but focused anger fueling me as I fought.
The others joined me a few minutes later, helping to finish off the first wave of Trappers. I knocked out the guy I was fighting and looked up at where Grimmel's airship was floating, glancing at my mate in worry then glaring at the man responsible for her state.
I felt someone rest their hand on my shoulder and I looked towards them with a glare, but my glare lessened slightly when I saw it was Nanna.
"Go save her. We'll handle the rest from here." She said.
I nodded as I sheathed my sword and attached it to my leg, then I unfurled my wings and shot off the beach. I went straight for Grimmel's airship, gripping onto Luna's chains to stop myself.
"Imma get you two out of here!" I reassured the girls when they looked at me worriedly.
I then noticed Grimmel come down from his perch and slide down Kala's chains. "If you love her so badly, then prove it!"
He then put a vial of the venom into the collar around my mate's head. She whimpered in pain at the initial feeling, but then went quiet into obedience.
"Prove to me she's the world to you, Dragon Master!" He exclaimed as he released the latch and mounted Kala's back as she was sprung from her restraints.
Kala then began to fly off groggy and obedient with Grimmel on her back. At first I was confused as to how she was flying without any issue, but then I spotted her automatic tailfin and my eyes widened in fear then narrowed as I glared at the man upon her back. I shook my head to clear it and slid down Luna's chain. I then took off her collar and rubbed her head.
"I'm sorry you were dragged into all of this Luna." I apologized then I released her from the restraints.
She shook her head and flew in place giving me a forgiving smile. " It is alright Hiccup. It is not your fault. I was the one who followed the two of you back. "
I nodded in understanding then looked below us before I looked back at her. "If it's not too much to ask, could you help out my tribe with the armada while I deal with Grimmel?"
" It would be my honor, Hiccup. I wish you luck with rescuing your mate. " Luna said with a respectful nod of her head before she rushed down to the ships below to help.
I smiled slightly then transformed into my dragon form and sped after Grimmel, paying little mind to the sound of something crashing into the ocean.
Grimmel looked back and grinned when he spotted me as we flew past billowing clouds. "That's it. That's it."
He then looked forward again and veered Kala towards rocky spires that were in the distance. I growled in irritation and sent a plasma blast at him, but he rolled Kala as if anticipating I would attack him, forcing her to take the impact of my blast on her stomach. She screeched in pain and my eyes widened as I whimpered.
'No! I didn't mean to hit her! That bastard!' I thought as rage took over. 'I've gotta get him off her, but how am I going to do that without accidentally harming her?'
I continued to chase Grimmel through the tall, craggy rocks of the island, slowly but surely closing in on them as I thought over the best way to get him off my mate's back. Before I could get any closer though, I quickly had to dodge as one of Grimmel's dragons tried to attack me.
I growled at it as I kept chasing Grimmel down, but all four of them began to ram into me to try and make me fall. As I was trying to get the dragons to leave me be, I barely registered that the others below began to cheer me on.
I screeched as the dragons clamped onto me and rendered me immobile. I growled as I struggled to get free, but then an idea came to me and I smirked as I transformed into my hybrid form and grabbed my sword as I sped out of the gap left from my transformation, releasing Zippleback gas from the pommel of the hilt. I then ignited the gas and smirked again as the dragons fell from the sky unconscious.
I attached my sword to my leg again then sped up and tackled Grimmel with a battle cry, knocking him off Kala's back. I gripped onto the collar that was on her head and began to struggle to get it off her as Grimmel clung to me and fought to get back up.
"AAGGH! You'll kill both of us! Fighting over a dragon? That's your plan?!" Grimmel yelled.
"As a matter of fact it is!" I shot back as I was able to get the collar off Kala.
She shook her head and whined, but before any words could be exchanged, she passed out as Grimmel was able to pry me off her. My eyes widened as I struggled against him as I watched my mate plummet, nothing but fear taking over my being.
That fear was washed away thankfully, when I saw that Luna sped over to Kala and caught her, but worry replaced that fear when the two girls crashed onto the island.
I was then broken out of my trance as I felt Grimmel tearing at my clothes and I growled as I transformed into my dragon form. His eyes widened in fear as I began to tear at his body with my claws. I saw nothing but red as I attacked him.
I released multiple plasma blasts onto his face as I tore him apart, not caring that his blood was splattering on my scales. Once I felt him go limp, I dropped him into the ocean and dived into the water to wash away the blood.
Once I was out of the water, I bolted to the island and landed. I shook off my body before I transformed into my human form and rushed over to Kala where she lay unconscious in the clearing where she and Luna crashed. I skidded to a stop on my knees and laid down on my stomach as I scratched under her maw. Kala whined and batted my hand away with her paw and I chuckled softly as I went back to scratching.
"Rise and shine, milady..~" I purred out and her earplates perked up slightly.
She slowly opened her eyes and blinked tiredly to clear the blurriness as she locked eyes with me and I smiled.
"Hey..There's my love.." I said as I sat up and pulled her head into my lap as I rubbed it soothingly.
Kala whined and leaned into my touch as she fell back asleep and I smiled softly. My attention was torn away from Kala as I felt Luna nudge my shoulder frantically and I looked at her confused.
"What is it..?" I asked, not understanding why she was so antsy.
" It's Kala..She's bleeding.. " She whimpered out and my eyes widened.
"Where?" I asked as I gently got out from under my mate's head so as to not wake her and stood.
Luna walked around Kala and I followed worriedly and my eyes widened when I saw a trail of blood, realization sinking in as tears formed in my eyes as my knees buckled under me and I fell to the ground.

Four-year-old Hiccup snuck downstairs to find his father crying in front of the hearth. He stopped on the stairs and looked at him worriedly.
Stoick then turned when he heard his son and wiped away his tears quickly. "Son! You should be asleep."
"I was thirsty." Hiccup fibbed as he messed with his night tunic.
"Yeah, come here." Stoick said as he ushered for Hiccup to come over to him.
Hiccup went down the remaining stairs and rushed to his dad. Stoick then lifted him onto his lap and allowed him to use the tongs to get the fire roaring to life again.
"Dad? Are you gonna get us a new mom?" Hiccup asked as he looked up at his father.
Stoick hugged him and kissed his head. "I don't want another. Your mom was the only woman for me. She was the love of my life. But with love comes loss, son. It's part of the deal. Sometimes it hurts, but in the end, it's all worth it. There's no greater gift than love."

I gripped my pants as I took a shuddering breath, the tears beginning to fall as I tried to keep myself from breaking down. I knew deep down that this would happen when she transformed earlier, but to actually see proof of it made reality crash down on me like the Green Death herself fell on top of me. My chest felt tight and it was hard to breathe as I tried to calm myself down, but it was proving to be very difficult.
After what felt like ages, I was able to calm myself down right as I felt Luna nudge my shoulder lightly. I looked at her with my head tilted in question, not trusting myself to talk right now in fear that I would break down if I did.
" I must take my leave now. I am truly sorry for your loss. I know the two of you were looking forward to raising your hatchling. May Akatosh watch over the two of you in your time of sorrow. " She said as she bowed her head.
I smiled sadly as tears began to fall again and I bowed my head back as she took to the sky. Luna then roared at all the dragons and I quickly got up and covered Kala's earplates to let her sleep for a little longer.
Once Luna was done, most of the dragons on the island took to the air, the only ones staying put being the ones that had riders that they loved dearly. We all watched as the dragons who chose to go with Luna flew away and disappeared from sight.
