Chapter 107: Chapter 107 – Choice

"..."
My eyes darted to the man, or Dr. Birkin, that lay on the floor, blood pooling around his body and a gaping bullet hole in the center of his head. Maybe he was killed by Ada.
It was an obvious choice since she wanted the G-Virus samples and left because she thought dealing with him was troublesome. She could've killed him for some information and she wasn't a woman that would let go of a valuable intel easily.
And since she didn't get the answer, maybe Dr. Birkin was just playing hardball and didn't want to tell her.
I could also see a document with bloodstain on it. I approached him, making sure I didn't accidentally touch the pool of blood.
"It's trash."
The document had nothing but garbage. The important part was either torn or burnt away. I couldn't find a single piece of information on the paper.
Maybe a list of supplies? I didn't know.
There was no way Ada wouldn't take the document with her. She must have read them already, then left. But it wasn't her goal to begin with, the G-Virus was.
"..."
My gaze fell to Birkin's dead body. The fact that he died here, instead of being ravaged by his own creations, was strange. Something wasn't adding up here.
Where was the mutated form? Where were the other G-Virus samples?
Anyway, my goal was to stop the whole mess and stop Wesker from injecting the mutation gene. From the current situation, I knew it was too late to stop him.
My mission from the unreliable choice system had also been cleared. So it should mean that my presence wouldn't make a big difference in this timeline.
So... did Wesker inject himself already?
If that's the case, then I needed to leave the sewer fast and return to the girls. We needed to move away from Chicago as fast as possible without alerting Wesker.
Or maybe...
'I can just kill Wesker or stay in the city under surveillance.'
The former was dangerous and the latter was unthinkable.
Who wanted to stay in a quarantine that had a high possibility of falling to the undead anyway? Especially when you had the power of the Shop and could easily travel to another city. I had a bunch of weapons and tools I could buy from the Shop.
It wouldn't be wise for me to stay here.
I looked at the door that Ada used to enter the room and then back at Birkin's dead body.
Yeah, that's dangerous too.
I gritted my teeth, feeling conflicted about what to do next.
"Let's just get the fuck outta here for now." I muttered under my breath and left the area, not sparing any glances to the dead man or the document lying on the ground.
My steps were quick as I walked down the hallway, avoiding the bodies of the zombies that had been shot by me and Ada earlier. As I reached the end of the hallway, I pushed open a steel door leading into the exit.
Getting out of this place was easier than coming inside, so it only took a few moments to reach the exit. I was soon out in the fresh air again. My body relaxed a bit as the cold air hit me.
Before I knew it, the sun had started to set, painting the sky in an orange hue. But it wasn't the time to enjoy the beautiful view since the zombies were already wandering around the city.
The streets were mostly empty except for some straggling zombies, wandering around the road aimlessly and without purpose. There was a faint sound of gunshots, explosions, and screaming that echoed from somewhere far away.
I had to find a place to sleep for tonight.
But the problem was I had no idea where to find a safe place to spend the night in this city full of zombies. And the most dangerous one would be people who were hiding. Also maybe Tyrant and Nemesis if there were still around.
"..."
Anyway, I had no other choice. So I walked down the street and looked for a place that could provide me safety and shelter.
Most buildings were still intact, which was good news.
Some were destroyed beyond repair though, either from the zombie outbreak or by looting. Some shops were ransacked while others remained untouched. There was no reason behind it, but I could only assume that those who were able to flee this city must have taken what they needed first before leaving.
Maybe some people got trapped inside the building or something because I could hear screaming and yelling coming from inside.
But there was nothing much I could do here. I didn't have a hero complex or anything. And I wouldn't risk myself saving some people that I didn't know. The world had changed and there were zombies roaming around, so I needed to protect myself.
There were some zombies wandering around, but none of them paid attention to me.
I quickly entered an apartment that looked intact from outside. When I entered, I couldn't help but pinch my nose due to the smell of rot and death that filled the air. The building had two stories with a small lobby in front.
"Fuck. This place reeks."
I quickly walked past the corpse on the ground and ran upstairs to check the rooms. What's worse than the smell was that the apartment seemed empty except for a few dead bodies.
Sleeping in this nasty place would make me puke. But I still entered one of the rooms, hoping that the smell wasn't as bad inside.
Fortunately, I was lucky enough. The room was relatively clean and free from the stench of corpses, making it possible for me to rest here without feeling nauseous.
"Ahh..." I let myself fall onto the couch, taking off the vest and backpack.
I felt relieved that I had found a place where I could relax, but at the same time, I was still uneasy about my surroundings. There might be survivors out there looking for a place like this. I would be attacked in the middle of the night, so I should be careful about that.
"Damn."
As I lay on the soft cushions, my mind drifted off to the recent events that happened. Especially when I encountered the woman known as Ada Wong. It wasn't just an ordinary encounter either since she pointed a gun at my head.
"Ada Wong."
What was I supposed to feel about her? Anger? Disgust?
None of it.
Instead, a strange sense of awe washed over me. She looked just as I remembered from Resident Evil, but her figure was more attractive in real life.
Somehow she let me go when she could just put a hole on my head and left my body for the zombies to eat.
She was also a mysterious person. A woman working for an organization that wasn't known by many. A rival company to the Umbrella Corporation. A spy sent by a certain government to steal the G-Virus?
"..."
But that wasn't what bothered me.
"Man..."
Everything fell apart so quickly that I couldn't wrap my head around it. It had been only two months since this outbreak started. Only two months and the whole world was consumed by the chaos. The world was already on the brink of collapsing.
Anyway, I had to sleep and return soon.
