HOTD! Busujima's Step Brother

Chapter 104: Chapter 104 – Sewer Area

After searching around the police station, I found a way to the sewer system, but it wasn't easy because the door to the underground passage was closed.

"It's sealed." I mumbled to myself, looking down into the dark depths of the underground tunnels.

Pungent smell hit my nose. The air smelled like rotten eggs and excrement mixed together, and there was something else in there too. Something foul and sickly sweet that I couldn't quite place.

I could also hear the faint sound of rats scurrying through the darkness below me.

'If I go down there, I might be infected with the G-Virus by the rats.' I frowned, realizing that I didn't bring any gas mask or face cover.

Dangerous. That's all I could say.

Anyway, I had no choice.

I went back to the upper floor and found a locker with a gas mask in it. I took the mask and put it on, securing the straps behind my head so it would stay firmly on my face.

What a lucky find, if I had to say so myself. Police station in Raccoon City had complete equipment. A lot of the equipment had been ransacked by the survivor, though. I could also see a few pieces of equipment left by the soldiers who were sent here earlier, destroyed into pieces.

After securing the only mask I found on my face, I returned to the sealed door leading to the sewers. It was a pretty heavy metal door, but I managed to push it open.

It led me to the sewers, where the water had turned dark green due to all the waste flowing through here. Mucus and blood mixed with the water, making it even worse. The air was thick with the stench of death, decay, and filth.

"Ugh..."

Raccoon City's sewer system was a labyrinth. It had so many tunnels and pipes running throughout the entire city.

I needed a map. If I got lost then it might be days before anyone found me, and that's if they were lucky enough.

So the first place I headed to was the officer or some kind of room that the janitor might use when they did their daily routine. I found it not far from my previous location where the metal door was located.

And unsurprisingly, it was unlocked. I entered the room and searched around for a map, hoping to find one somewhere.

The place was dirty, and it smelled like shit.

A large map of Raccoon City was on the wall. The place was covered with grime, and the walls were moldy from moisture seeping through the concrete.

As a result of years of neglect, the room was full of dust and debris. I had to use my hands to wipe the dust off the map before I could even see something on it.

Even then, some were covered in a layer of dust and dirt that was hard to get rid of without some effort. I couldn't see a part of it clearly.

'Let's just take the map with me.'

Better have a bad map rather than none. The place where I stood right now was recorded as Police Station 2. And based on what I read, the sewers were connected to the whole Raccoon City.

Of course I had no idea where Umbrella hid their lab. And I didn't remember anything about Resident Evil 2 or 3. My memory of the franchise was hazy since it had been so many years ago since I played the games.

'I need to get to the lab.'

I took a flashlight from my bag and used it to light the way. My rifle was on my back but my revolver was ready to shoot. I walked down the tunnel, trying not to think about what might happen to me if I didn't make it out of here.

Right now I could still walk in a dry place. However, some parts had been submerged under water.

The sewer water looked pretty deep, but not deep enough to submerge me completely. Most probably it would reach my knee.

Anyway, I walked on, my boots making loud thumping sounds as they touched the ground. I walked cautiously, keeping my eyes peeled for anything that might attack me.

I could see rats everywhere, which was bad news for me.

"Graar!"

Suddenly a big rat came at me. I quickly raised my gun and fired twice at it, hitting it both times. It fell backwards with a loud splash as it died.

There was no time to celebrate. More of the rats came toward me.x

I quickly aimed and shot them one by one, causing green blood to spray out of their bodies as they died. I continued walking down the tunnel, shooting at the mutated rats whenever I saw them.

Reload. Shoot.

Reload. Shoot.

This became a repetitive routine as the revolver ammos I got from Miss Rika as a good luck charm dwindled into nothing.

That was more than 28 bullets I used to kill the rats.

How many were there in this sewer system? I couldn't tell, but it was definitely a lot.

And they weren't the only enemies I encountered in this tunnel either.

A few zombie dogs were also there, attacking me from behind or the side. Their teeth were sharp and their feets were fast.

I couldn't get bitten even once because this world was chaotic. Resident Evil enemies combined with a virus that turns us into zombies in one bite from Highschool of the Dead made everything dangerous.

Anyway, I killed a few more of the zombie dogs and continued my search for the underground lab.

After walking for a while, I found myself at the end of the tunnel.

Starting from this area, I had to enter the sewer itself, submerging into the dirty water.

It wasn't too deep. The water level would reach up to my knees.

However, that wasn't the problem.

I didn't want to get wet, but it seemed like I had no choice.

"Let's go." I sighed and walked into the water after bracing myself.

Cold water immediately entered my shoes. A nasty feeling of dirty substance clinging onto my skin made me shiver uncomfortably.

It was so disgusting, and it felt like a slimy thing was touching me all over. It felt gross.

But I kept going, keeping myself alert and looking out for any danger that might come. And it didn't take long to find a strange zombie in the water.

He was crouching under the water, with only half of his head visible from above the surface. I could see his red eyes glowing in the darkness of the sewers reflecting the flashlight.

I raised my revolver and shot at it.

Bang!

The bullet went through his skull and killed him instantly. His body fell back into the water with a splash, sending a wave of the sewer water around.

"Graaarr..."

But then, two similar zombies rose up from the water, growling angrily. I didn't even realize that there were more of them. They had blended well into the surroundings and it was hard to spot them with my naked eyes.

My aim wasn't perfect with a slippery footing and I wasted one bullet for the headshot. The second one was killed quickly with a shot in the head.

I sighed in relief as I saw the dead bodies of these zombies.

It was a bit dangerous moving without any goal. I had to be careful and keep moving forward. After that encounter I decided to go through a different route. The one with a ladder to go up.

Some zombies were there but they were easy to kill. Nothing unusual for the most part, until I found myself in a big junction.

"A tunnel, huh?"

One path led to a tunnel-like room where the walls were covered in moss and slime.

The ceiling was high enough for me to stand upright, but it looked pretty narrow. It would probably be difficult to fight there.

Another path led to another staircase leading downward.

And the third path was blocked by a metal door that seemed locked from the inside. I could hear the faint sound of machinery running behind it.

So I went to the first option first, heading through the narrow tunnel with the moss and slime covering the wall. I somehow remembered Leon went through this path in the series too. That steel door at the other side of the tunnel looks similar.

Also...

"That blob, it's that monster, right?"

A blob of flesh pulsated and throbbed in the water. There were some leech-like creatures swimming around it.

On its body, an eyeball moved disgustingly and its mouth opened and closed like a flower blooming with each breath.

Yeah, this was the monster that Leon encountered. It seemed like the guy hadn't visited this place. Or maybe I came a little late?

Whatever.

I didn't know the name of the monster. I didn't play Resident Evil 2 so I forgot most of the things in the game, except for some characters. However, it was a strong mutated monster in the game.

So, it should be strong, right? I wouldn't know how to deal with it without risking my own life.

Still... a hand grenade and a few shots would be enough to kill this monster. I took out my grenade and threw it to the blob. At the same time, I prepared my rifle and readied my finger on the trigger.

As the grenade fell into the water and made a splash, the blob of flesh reacted violently. Its eyeballs widened in shock and fear. Then it exploded with an earth shaking sound.

Blood sprayed everywhere and pieces of the monster fell all around the place. Some of them splashed into the water while others flew in my direction.

I raised my hand to cover myself.

When everything settled down, I stepped forward carefully and looked around.

"Is it that easy?"

Reality might be easier than the game.

But I was wrong. Its main body still hid in the water. It raised its body and blocked the tunnel's path. Its body looked slimy, but at least the monsters had disappeared completely.

"..."

It seemed I would have to use my gun.
