[Day 1: You are a clergy member of the Church.]

Xia Chen felt slightly dazed, likely due to his recent transmigration, yet he could hear a cacophony of noise around him.

The foul smell from the streets mixed with the church's low-quality incense, making it even more nauseating. Xia Chen instinctively shook his head to clear his thoughts.

Then, he realized that instead of wearing the white robes typical of clergy members, he was dressed in gray garments and donning a bird-beaked mask.

This attire didn't resemble a religious figure but rather suggested a villainous role.

"The Church of Destiny," Xia Chen muttered, grasping his current situation.

In this world's history, Schicksal wasn't always hidden in the shadows. On the contrary, for a significant period, Schicksal emerged as a dominant force shaping historical events.

Among its creations, the Church served as a tool for Schicksal to control people.

Before Otto's rise to power, Schicksal was not a righteous savior but rather a parasitic organization where corrupt individuals amassed wealth through their influence and authority.

This part of Schicksal's history could be considered dark, yet Otto did not suppress it. Consequently, after Otto's revolution, Schicksal gradually relinquished control over various nations and transformed into a clandestine group solely focused on combating Honkai.

Although Otto himself couldn't fulfill his promise to Kallen, he molded Schicksal into an organization aligning with her vision.

Xia Chen gathered his thoughts and observed the current situation.

Many people knelt before the church, taking out their money as if purchasing medicine and indulgences. From snippets of their conversations, he learned that Europe was currently plagued by the Black Death, which had high mortality rates and rapid transmission, with almost no effective treatment available.

Of course, there were fortunate survivors who managed to endure the Black Death.

As a result, the Church propagated the belief that by contributing funds and showing devout faith, one could receive God's protection and be spared from illness. If someone died, it was attributed to insufficient purity of faith.

A ludicrous scene unfolded: emaciated individuals eagerly handed their money to well-fed priests, almost insisting as if they wouldn't relent until their offerings were accepted.

Feeling some sympathy, Xia Chen couldn't help but sigh upon noticing his colleague nearby, gleefully whispering like a delighted rat.

His compassion at this moment would only invite misfortune, despite knowing it wouldn't be difficult for him to overthrow Schicksal now.

However, he couldn't directly combat the Black Death.

The disasters caused by Honkai extend beyond just Honkai Beasts or Herrschers; any event disrupting civilization's order can be considered a manifestation of Honkai, including viruses and natural calamities.

He could handle Honkai Beasts, but viruses and natural disasters were beyond his control.

To eradicate the Black Death, it seemed one could only wait for the disease to naturally dissipate.

Xia Chen's eyes narrowed slightly as he awaited the end of this prayer session. As a clergy member, he would also receive considerable donations during these gatherings.

After all, the Church wouldn't mistreat its own people.

Unconsciously, Xia Chen touched the heavy coin pouch at his waist.

With a sigh, he acknowledged that as an individual, there was little one could do against such circumstances.

Once the prayers concluded, he found an excuse to leave and observe the city.

Europe ravaged by the Black Death resembled hell on earth.

Bodies lay scattered amidst pools of filth and sewage, while those still alive either suffered from swollen limbs or appeared emaciated, like skeletal figures. They wandered the streets akin to mindless zombies.

Xia Chen witnessed a young girl rummaging through garbage heaps, searching for rats and flies, only to be chased away by others.

In those times, rats were considered valuable food sources, but the girl stood no chance against the swarms of adults competing for them. Perhaps tomorrow, she too would join the countless bones lining the streets.

Or maybe, if fortunate, she might find a merchant or noble willing to take her in as a pampered slave.

Disappointed, the girl left the street.

Maybe in the next street, she would discover the sustenance she craved, or perhaps nothing at all.

Just then, Xia Chen spotted a white-haired girl approaching and handing the distressed child a meat pie.

A steaming, white pastry filled with succulent, juicy meat.

Xia Chen immediately recognized this girl:

Kallen Kaslana.

Schicksal wasn't entirely composed of bloodsuckers exploiting the people. The esteemed Knight family, the Kaslanas, have always been at the forefront of protecting them.

Kallen was no exception.

Although the Black Death is not equivalent to Honkai Beasts, she managed to convince her father to purchase medicines and food with their wealth, then distribute it among the poor.

Kallen also attempted to persuade the Church to abandon their so-called indulgences for sin forgiveness, but how could she shake the entrenched interests within its hierarchy?

Thus, she could only help the people in this world through the means available to her.

Despite being as insignificant as a firefly's glow, it still shone as a faint light amidst the dark land.

Xia Chen silently observed everything unfolding.

He watched as the girl greedily devoured the bread, licking every drop of oil from her fingers clean. As if drawn by some unseen force, more and more people began approaching Kallen.

Prepared beforehand, Kallen had stacks of warm bread behind her, distributed alongside servants.

However, no matter how many loaves they had, it would never be enough.

People grasping onto hope started shouting, "Please, give us more bread, even coarse rye bread will do."

"Please..."

"Please..."

A crowd surrounded Kallen, blocking her escape routes. Their voices sounded plaintive and aggrieved, almost mournful, yet more akin to wailing demons.

This seemed to be Kallen's first encounter with such chaos; she appeared both panicked and striving to remain composed.

"Everyone, please calm down," she reassured them. "There will be enough for all."

She began making promises, saying, "I swear upon..."

Before Kallen could finish, a sudden whirlwind erupted around her.

The wind was peculiar, lifting dust and causing people to scatter in fear. Instinctively, Kallen adopted a defensive stance, sensing that this gust was far from ordinary.

Indeed, it was extraordinary because Xia Chen controlled it.

He didn't approach Kallen directly, or rather, what purpose would it serve? He knew he couldn't solve the Black Death, nor could he assist Kallen in doing so.

His only intent was to protect this kind-hearted girl from being engulfed by the world's malevolence, hence summoning the wind.

But that was the extent of his intervention.

As the wind subsided, everything appeared unchanged.

Kallen, momentarily startled, paused before continuing on her way. She still needed to acquire more bread.
