Chapter 184: Chapter 184: Photo Shoot
On the day of the trial, Ethan, accompanied by Tom, entered the courtroom. Naomi also arrived surrounded by her lawyer and the media.
However, while Ethan wore a confident expression, Naomi's face was expressionless, leaving no clue as to what she was thinking.
After the trial began, their lawyers did not present any important evidence. Instead, they focused more on the fiasco at the fashion designer awards ceremony.
Over the past few months, they had not found any proof of Ethan being racist. After all, Ethan had black friends and frequently interacted with black celebrities, making it hard to slander him.
But since they needed evidence, they turned to those who had been insulted by Ethan.
For example, Hans, the photography assistant who had been dismissed by Ethan during Avril Lavigne's music video shoot.
Hans stood in court and said, "Ethan is a tyrant. On that day, the track was perfectly clean, but he forced me to lick the track. He did this to torture me, humiliating me for his own amusement, and the rest of the crew were his accomplices!"
The reporters immediately turned their attention to Ethan, recording Hans' words.
Ethan remained calm, not showing any signs of guilt.
Once Hans finished testifying, Naomi's lawyer called in several people who had been verbally abused by Ethan, to prove that he habitually used verbal violence to control others.
They also presented clips from Ethan's films, showing scenes where black characters were tortured, as evidence of his alleged racism.
While clear-minded people would not consider these critical pieces of evidence, the jury began to soften after watching the scenes of black characters suffering.
Then it was Ethan's turn to explain.
Ethan spoke, "First, I want to clarify something. All my reprimands towards actors and crew members are part of my working method and occur in the working environment. It has nothing to do with racism. Just look at the witnesses. I treat both white and black people equally."
The opposing lawyer responded, "So, does that mean verbal abuse is a normal part of your behavior?"
Ethan smiled, "Sorry, I have a mental disorder. I can't control it."
"What?" The lawyer raised an eyebrow.
Ethan's lawyer immediately presented a medical certificate: "My client has a stress-induced language dysfunction, which means when he is angry, he cannot control his language and resorts to swearing as a form of release."
There was an uproar in the courtroom. No one had expected Ethan to have a mental illness!
But some reporters couldn't help but grin, thinking it was a brilliant move. If verbal abuse could be classified as a mental disorder, then it would no longer be subject to legal consequences.
As for whether this disease actually existed? Well, this was America, where for the right price, any medical condition could be invented, and a few papers could be published to back it up.
So, in this round, Ethan won.
While Naomi's side was still in shock, Ethan's lawyer spoke again.
"Your Honor, in fact, after thorough investigation, we have enough evidence to prove that Naomi Campbell is the one with violent tendencies and a propensity for lying. She frequently beats and insults others in her personal life, and we have five witnesses."
Bang! The judge slammed the gavel, asking the witnesses to step forward.
"Your Honor, I'm Naomi's photographer. During a shoot, she became dissatisfied with the photos and smashed a vase on my head, causing me to get five stitches."
"Your Honor, I'm Naomi's assistant. She frequently expresses her dissatisfaction with white people and often hits and insults me. I still have scars on my arms from when she cut me with a razor blade."
"Your Honor, I'm Naomi's housekeeper. Although it's hard to say, my job was very dangerous. Naomi has a strong urge to attack others. Even if the breakfast is slightly wrong, she threatens me with scissors. That's why I quit my job. The memories were just too awful."
Listening to the testimonies, Naomi's face turned a deep shade of blue, like a rotten shrimp.
She glared at Ethan, unable to believe that her hidden secrets had been dug up as if Ethan had prepared for this moment.
The reporters in the courtroom also noticed the difference between Ethan and Naomi.
Ethan only used foul language when encountering setbacks at work, and it was not violent in nature.
But Naomi had no patterns to her outbursts, and it was clear that she had a violent nature. It was hard to use Ethan's medical condition to explain her behavior.
Naomi's situation was now very dangerous. If she was considered violent or racist, the judges would no longer believe her claims.
Ethan's lawyer then called up several of his collaborators and an agent from CAA to counter Hans's claims.
"Ethan is an excellent director and photographer. Whenever we don't know something, we always turn to him for guidance. Although he occasionally swears, we understand it's just his way of urging us to finish the work, and he never means it maliciously."
"I'm a sensitive girl, and Ethan has reprimanded me before, but I believe it was my fault for not doing a good job. Afterward, when I performed well, Ethan even praised me. He's like a strict teacher, and I learned a lot from him."
A CAA agent then made a final statement.
"After an internal investigation, we found that 55% of the clients who worked with Hans were dissatisfied with his performance. Moreover, several female employees have reported being sexually harassed by him. Based on this, we believe Hans is negligent and has harassed colleagues. The company has already collected evidence and is filing a lawsuit against him, so the court should not trust his testimony."
The reporters were thrilled as Ethan's side had gained a significant advantage, leaving Naomi in a passive position.
Naomi's lawyer, frustrated and unable to counter Ethan's moves, requested a recess.
After the break, Ethan, accompanied by Carl, walked into the lobby, where reporters immediately thrust microphones at him.
"Ethan, is your mental illness real? When did you first notice it?"
Ethan rubbed his temples, feigning a deep look. "I first realized I had a problem when I was bullied at school. But back then, medical knowledge was not as advanced, so it wasn't diagnosed."
"Ethan! So, was Naomi's accusation against you fabricated?"
"Of course, I want to say again, I'm not racist. I highly respect racial equality and freedom."
"Ethan, how far will you pursue this?"
"If they don't repent, we'll pursue it to the end."
"Ethan, what are your plans next? I heard Memoirs of a Geisha is starting production."
"As for the movie, I can't comment, but there's something else I'm working on…" Ethan raised a finger, "I'm planning my own photography exhibition."
"What's the theme of the exhibition?"
"Humanity and desire." Ethan smirked. "I've already arranged for a famous actress to be the first model for my exhibition photos. I'll be working with more celebrities in the future, and the photos will follow a dark style with more alterations."
After speaking, Carl helped Ethan shield him from the reporters as they headed to the lounge.
Several hours later, the trial finally ended, but the result would take some time to announce.
However, most people believed that Ethan had a very high chance of winning, with little chance of losing.
After all, the evidence was overwhelming, and even if the judge wanted to lean toward Naomi, they would have to consider the basic facts.
After the trial confrontation with Naomi ended, Ethan welcomed the first celebrity he had photographed in New York.
Julia Roberts, who had presented Ethan with an award, was the first celebrity to volunteer to participate in his photography exhibition.
"Hi, Julia!" Ethan greeted her when she arrived at his rented villa.
"Ethan!" Julia greeted him warmly with a kiss on the cheek, then smiled and said, "Since you shot Charlize, it's like she's been blessed by God."
"That's not my doing," Ethan shook his head, "I'm just an ordinary photographer."
"I know, I know, I'll keep quiet about it!" Julia said, understanding his unspoken words, and followed him into the villa.
"So, Ethan, how do you plan to shoot?"
Ethan closed the door, turned on the lights, and in the living room, there was a large bed placed in the center, surrounded by various lighting equipment.
"I need you to lie on the bed, Julia, and you'll need to take off your clothes."
"All of them?" Julia raised her eyebrows. She was dressed in a pale yellow long dress, with light makeup, as per Ethan's request.
"Yeah, that's right." Ethan turned around, picked up a set of flesh-colored pasties from the table, and was about to hand them to Julia, only to find that the woman had already bared her chest.
"Wow." Ethan didn't look awkward like many would in such a situation. Instead, he complimented her generously, "Julia, has anyone ever told you that your waistline is really amazing?"
"Thanks for the compliment," Julia replied casually. She had no qualms about her nudity, lying on the bed and stroking her thighs. "What pose should I take?"
"Mmm..." Once in photographer mode, Ethan became serious. He adjusted the lights and then began giving directions, "Julia, sit on the bed, bend one leg up, and leave the other leg flat."
He was aiming to mimic the work of famous black-and-white photographer Waka Watuchi, who specialized in photographing the human body from strange, seductive angles. His most famous photo was of a woman completely naked, sitting with her back to the camera, her large hips as the visual focus, while her intimate parts were in shadow, giving the impression of curves but leaving much to the imagination.
Ethan wanted something similar, though he planned to shoot in color.
Julia listened to his directions and wrapped her body around her bent knee, using her head and knee to shield her private parts.
"The body's not soft enough yet, Julia. Relax a bit more, and don't worry, I won't make you look bad."
"Haha, Ethan, I hope so. Last time you were harsh with me during the shoot."
"Oh, if you don't perform well, I might be just as harsh."
Julia rolled her eyes, "Since I'm the first one to come to you, Ethan, don't hurt my feelings."
"Alright, alright." Ethan laughed and picked up his camera. "Let's go, straighten your back, yes, hug your knee. Very good."
"Click!"
Julia's figure was captured on film as Ethan continued to direct.
For the second shot, Julia spread her legs into a split on the floor. Her feet were resting on a transparent chair, making her appear suspended.
Ethan adjusted the lighting to create a silhouette effect, using the light reflecting on her skin.
Through the viewfinder, Julia's body appeared abstract, almost like a piece of art, with her exposed skin still sensual but not overly sexual.
Throughout the process, Ethan never stopped guiding her.
"Don't move around like you have Parkinson's. Try to imagine the circus monkeys walking the tightrope."
"Hold your chest, let them balloon up like water balloons. Yes, very pleasing to the eye!"
"One leg back, my lens will shoot from behind, stretch your toes!"
After several shots, Julia was exhausted and collapsed on the bed. "Ethan, you won't show my face in these photos, right?"
She had been open to the shoot, but some poses still made her blush.
Ethan remained calm, as though Julia was simply a puppet in his hands, to be positioned as he wished.
Finally, when they reached the last shot, Julia couldn't help but complain, "Ethan, are you really photographing me? I feel like you're shooting something else."
Ethan raised an eyebrow. "This is photography art, and it's the theme for my exhibition. But the last shot won't focus on your body."
"What will it be then?"
"Your face."
Ethan directed Julia to sit on a chair, then aimed his camera at her collarbone area and said, "Relax, Julia. Calm down, I need the most real version of you, free from identity, masks, and thoughts. Don't think about anything, and don't make any moves. Just stay still."
"Click!" As Julia completely relaxed, Ethan pressed the shutter.
"Great, Julia, that's an excellent shot."
"I hope so, Ethan. Can you let me see the photos once they're done?" Julia put on her clothes one by one.
"Of course, no problem." Ethan took the memory card out of the camera and looked at her. "You'll be pleasantly surprised."
"I just hope it brings me some good luck."
Julia's words reflected the thoughts of many Hollywood stars. Since Ethan announced his photography exhibition, many had expressed interest in participating.
Some sought good fortune through his photos, while others hoped to gain more fashion resources from the exposure.
However, Ethan was selective about who he worked with. He needed models who were not only physically appealing but also had flaws or significant fame. Only then could the theme be truly conveyed.
Thus, his next choice was Leonardo DiCaprio, one of the most well-known male actors in Hollywood.
However, the most important event at the moment was the upcoming release of Fifty Shades of Gray, the adult novel written by Ethan and polished by Carmella.
