Chapter 83: Chapter 85: Discovering a New System Mechanism
Saturday morning.
Since Minato and the others had arranged for a detailed lesson on how to make squirrel-shaped sweet and sour fish, Mu Yue sent a shadow clone to guide the disciples while he himself stayed in Konoha's main district, giving a cooking lesson to Minato and Kushina .
The reason he didn't swap tasks—letting the shadow clone teach cooking and the original body teach the disciples—was that shadow clones didn't benefit from the "Chef" skill bonus.
Although shadow clones could perform the ninjutsu that Mu Yue knew, the specialized skills for cooking or teaching didn't transfer.
Taking out a fish and placing it on the cutting board, Mu Yue began cutting as he explained to Minato and Kushina:
"When dealing with fish, first make a slanted cut behind the gills, breaking the spine."
Mu Yue chopped off the fish's head, then added a reminder:
"The fish head, once removed, needs to be slightly cleaned. Cut off the area around the gills, so it'll hold its shape better when fried. This will make the presentation more appealing."
"No wonder mine doesn't look good; I missed this step," Kushina exclaimed with an enlightened expression.
While handling the fish meat, Mu Yue emphasized that they needed to control their strength carefully, cutting four-fifths into the fish without breaking the skin. If the skin broke, the dish's appearance would already be a failure.
At this step, Mu Yue handed over two prepared fish to Kushina and Minato for practice.
Minato did okay, being cautious not to cut through the fish completely but ended up slicing too shallowly. Kushina, on the other hand, cut straight through the fish skin.
"Haha, this fish is too soft! It broke right away. Mu Yue, don't you have a harder type of fish?" Kushina tried to blame the fish.
"If the meat were tougher, would you even want to eat it?" Mu Yue sighed with a wry smile.
Thankfully, Mu Yue had prepared extras, giving Kushina another fish to try.
With the experience from her first attempt, Kushina managed three cuts before breaking the fish skin this time—a significant improvement.
"From now on, this part of handling fish will
The lesson continued, with Mu Yue carefully explaining each step, letting them practice immediately afterward.
This teaching method was slow, and by noon, Mu Yue still hadn't managed to lead Minato and Kushina through the complete process of making the squirrel-shaped sweet and sour fish. They had only completed the dissection phase.
It wasn't until after 2 PM that Mu Yue finally helped them finish their respective squirrel-shaped sweet and sour fish.
Though they technically completed the dish, the appearance was vastly different.
"We followed your steps exactly, so why does it still look so different?" Kushina lamented, noticing the stark contrast between their finished product and Mu Yue's.
"Because we're beginners. With more practice, the presentation should improve," Minato consoled her.
Minato, for one, was satisfied. He had successfully created what seemed like a complex dish.
If cooking difficulty were ranked, Minato felt this dish was at least a B-level challenge.
He immediately added it to the menu for Jiraiya's upcoming visit.
[Lecture Completed]
[Rating: B]
[Reward Obtained: Magical Mapo Tofu Recipe]
Just as Mu Yue was about to say something, the system suddenly issued a prompt.
"Teaching cooking counts as a lecture? And only teaching two people can yield lecture rewards?" Mu Yue wondered about
Why hadn't rewards triggered before when he taught cooking? And why hadn't he received rewards for teaching his disciples?
After some thought, Mu Yue formed a few theories:
The system might consider not just the number of people but also their skill level. Although he only taught Minato and Kushina, they were very strong.
As for why previous cooking lessons didn't trigger the reward, Mu Yue guessed it had to do with the duration and depth of the lesson.
The lecture reward mechanism truly caught Mu Yue off guard, and the reward itself was a bit abstract—a recipe from Cooking Master Boy .
Minato and Kushina each tasted their squirrel-shaped sweet and sour fish and showed satisfied smiles. Despite the flawed appearance, the taste was excellent.
Still, Mu Yue's dish was the first to be finished. Although
"Mu Yue, you've spent most of your day teaching us how to cook. Thank you so much," Minato said with a warm smile.
"It's no trouble at all. You two often help me solve issues with sealing techniques," Mu Yue replied with a smile, reassuring them it was no big deal.
"Speaking of sealing techniques, how's your progress on the three-finger seal?" Kushina asked.
"I've made some headway," Mu Yue said, sharing his insights from the past three days of training.
"That's decent progress. You're on track with what I predicted,
When it came to sealing techniques, Kushina believed there was no one in the ninja world more proficient than her.
"I'll write down some of my insights from practicing sealing techniques and give them to you," Kushina said after a moment of thought.
Kushina was someone who valued reciprocity. After Mu Yue had taught them cooking so meticulously, she wanted to return the favor.
"That would be a great help," Mu Yue said with satisfaction.
"It's no trouble. Don't mention it—it's a small effort," Kushina laughed heartily.
By evening, Obito informed Mu Yue that he planned to reapply for the Taijutsu Challenge on Sunday.
"Are you ready?" Mu Yue asked with a smile, pulling out three scrolls containing test papers.
Seeing the scrolls, Obito's face fell instantly. He didn't want to do paperwork!
But glancing over at Guy and Shisui practicing "Shave," and remembering their conversation yesterday, Obito's determination reignited.
"Mu Yue-sensei, I'm ready.
Having trained hard for a week after his last Saturday's crushing defeat, Obito was determined to trust his efforts.
Sunday Morning
Obito arrived early, beating even Shisui to the training ground for the first time.
After some warm-up exercises, Mu Yue led Obito to the setup challenge area.
"Same as before. Keep heading east, and you'll find the endpoint," Mu Yue reminded him.
Obito nodded confidently and immediately sprinted in the direction Mu Yue indicated, using all his strength.
This time, he didn't make the same mistake as before—looking back to check
With this cautious attitude, Obito managed to avoid every trap and arrived at the obstacle that had defeated him last time: the massive swinging log barrier. Here, thick wooden logs swung back and forth unpredictably.
Without hesitation, Obito dashed into the obstacle. His newfound speed allowed him to pass through without a scratch.
Having trained extensively with weights, Obito now felt unburdened and incredibly agile. His running speed was dramatically improved.
After clearing the previously failed section, Obito relaxed a bit and flashed a bright smile.
"As long as I take it seriously, this challenge isn't so bad."
But his celebration lasted only three seconds. Before he could finish his thought, he stepped into a hidden pit and fell in.
"Minus one point," Mu Yue's warm voice echoed into the pit.
Obito quickly leaped out of the hole, his face a mix of embarrassment and frustration. He continued running, now even m
He knew the price of carelessness was steep—not just restarting the challenge but an additional 100 test questions.
After several more minutes of careful running, Obito finally spotted a kunai stuck in a wooden stake ahead. Attached to the kunai was a flag with "FINISH" written on it.
A wide grin spread across his face.
"The finish line! And I still have two points left. My cautiousness is paying off—I'm amazing!"
He strutted toward the kunai with exaggerated confidence. But just as he reached the flag, a trap sprang, suspending him in mid-air with a net.
"Minus one point," Mu Yue's calm voice announced again.
Obito groaned, hastily freeing himself from the trap. This time, he thoroughly examined his surroundings before stepping over the final marker.
Finally, Mu Yue stepped out from hiding and said, "Although you're down to your last point, you passed."
"Yeah! I did it!" Obito shouted, pumping his fists in the air and jumping around in celebration. No more failure, no more test papers!
"I can finally join Shisui and Guy in learning Shave !"
"Who told you that you can start learning Shave now?" Mu Yue asked, tilting his head in confusion.
"Didn't you say I could after completing the Taijutsu Challenge?" Obito looked puzzled.
"Yes, I did. But you've only completed the first stage—'Forest Sprint.' There's still a second stage," Mu Yue explained.
Obito thought back carefully and recalled a faint memory of Mu Yue
"The second stage is called 'River Dash.' You'll need to cross a river within the time limit without falling into the water," Mu Yue elaborated.
"That's it? Sounds easy," Obito said, his confidence returning.
"It's not that simple. I'll be releasing ninjutsu over the water as interference," Mu Yue added with a faint smile.
"Water Dragon Jutsu again?" Obito asked.
Mu Yue nodded. While it was indeed Water Dragon Jutsu, the number of water dragons would be significantly higher this time.
Feeling reassured, Obito's expression
River Dash Challenge
Mu Yue glanced at Obito's determined expression and smiled faintly. "Alright then. Let's begin the second stage."
They arrived at the riverbank, where the flowing water sparkled under the sunlight. The calm surface, however, was deceptive—Mu Yue had already prepared his interference techniques.
"The rules are simple," Mu Yue explained. "Cross the river within the time limit without falling in. You can use your chakra to walk on the water, but the interference will be relentless. Don't think it'll be as easy as it looks."
Obito nodded confidently. I've practiced this so much already; there's no way I'll fail.
"Get ready... go!" Mu Yue signaled.
Obito dashed onto the water's surface, his feet glowing faintly as he channeled chakra for balance. He moved swiftly, his body light and agile from the week-long weighted training.
But just as he reached the center of the river, a massive Water Dragon Jutsu burst forth from the river. The dragon roared, spraying water everywhere as it spiraled toward him.
Obito gritted his teeth and zigzagged to avoid the first dragon, only for a second one to rise behind him.
"Two?!" Obito exclaimed, narrowly dodging the second dragon by leaping into the air.
Landing back on the water, he felt a sudden instability in his chakra flow. He had to focus harder to regain his balance.
"You're getting sloppy," Mu Yue called out from the riverbank, forming more hand seals. "Don't just rely on speed—stay aware of your chakra control!"
Three more water dragons emerged from the surface, weaving toward Obito.
"I got this!" Obito yelled, kicking off the water and jumping over the nearest dragon. He twisted mid-air, barely avoiding the jaws of another. Landing gracefully, he picked up speed, rushing toward the opposite shore.
The constant interference tested his limits, but Obito's determination never wavered. As he approached the finish line, the final water dragon surged up, blocking his path.
Without hesitation, Obito pushed his cha
Panting but victorious, Obito turned back to look at Mu Yue, his expression a mix of exhaustion and pride.
"I did it! No traps this time, right?" Obito called out, half-joking.
Mu Yue approached, his usual calm demeanor hiding a glimmer of approval. "Congratulations. You've passed the second stage."
Obito threw his fists into the air and let out
"—move on to the third stage," Mu Yue interrupted, cutting his celebration short.
Obito froze. "Third… stage?"
Mu Yue chuckled. "Of course. Did you think two stages were all it would take to earn the right to learn Shave ? The next challenge is a test of reflexes and adaptability. Get some rest tonight; we start tomorrow morning."
Obito groaned loudly, slumping onto the ground. "You're torturing me on purpose, aren't you?"
Mu Yue didn't respond directly, but the playful glint in his eyes was answer enough.
Evening Reflections
Back at the training camp, Obito sat on a log, watching Shisui and Guy practice Shave in the distance. Their movements were impossibly fast, their figures blurring as they das
Obito clenched his fists. I'll get there too. No matter how many stages or challenges Mu Yue-sensei throws at me, I'll overcome them.
Determined, he began stretching, mentally preparing himself for whatever lay ahead.
