Chapter 7: CH 7
So, what do you want to talk about, Kaichou?" Jin asked as he moved another white pawn.
"About that… Actually, the student council has been considering a few male students. The reason is that we're planning to invite one male student to join the council," Sona replied, her eyes fixed on the chessboard as she skillfully moved one of her black chess pieces, a confident smile still playing on her lips.
"That's interesting news. I bet a lot of guys would be thrilled to hear that. But… why am I here?" Jin asked, feigning ignorance. He already had a hunch about her intentions, but he wanted to hear it directly from her. Observing Sona's responses would help him better understand her personality—and allow him to plan his next move more effectively.
He moved another piece—this time, the bishop. Sona's smile faltered slightly as she analyzed Jin's move, but she quickly regained her composure and countered with her own piece.
"My, it seems the older Hyoudou brother is a bit dense—unlike his perverted little brother," Sona chuckled softly as she made her move. "Check." She then reached for her teacup and took a sip, her eyes never leaving the board.
"Please, Kaichou. I'm not that dense," Jin replied with a smirk as he moved his king forward, surprising Sona with the unorthodox move. "I was simply stating that the other guys would be excited. Besides, I didn't want to embarrass myself by jumping to conclusions."
"Fair point. I wouldn't want to embarrass myself either if I were in your position. My apologies for calling you dense," Sona replied with a slight bow of her head before moving another chess piece.
"No offense taken. You don't need to apologize. But, back to the point—why exactly did you call me here?" Jin asked, shifting his gaze from the chessboard to meet Sona's eyes.
"What if I told you that I wanted to invite you to join the student council?" Sona asked in a teasing tone, her smile widening slightly. "Also… Check." She moved her queen to capture one of Jin's pawns.
"Hahaha! If that's the case, I'd probably just laugh it off and say something like, 'Sorry, but I'm not interested,'" Jin replied with a chuckle as he moved his queen to capture Sona's queen. "Check, Kaichou."
"Is that so? What a shame…" Sona's smile faded slightly, but she quickly composed herself. Still, she couldn't help but feel disappointed. After all, she had a special reason for wanting Jin to join—not just as a student council member, but as something more.
'He's incredibly intelligent… Perhaps the smartest human in this entire academy.'
Sona was no ordinary student. She was a devil—the heiress of the prestigious Sitri family. "Shitori Sona" was merely the alias she used while attending Kuoh Academy. But despite her status, she had never encountered a human who intrigued her as much as Jin did.
Ever since she first saw him, she had felt an inexplicable pull toward him. She couldn't quite explain it, but her instincts told her that Hyoudou Jin was someone special. Someone worth recruiting—not just as a council member, but as a member of her peerage.
However, her pride as a chess player was also at stake right now. This was the first time she had faced such a formidable opponent her age. The only person who had ever come close to beating her was her best friend—and rival—Rias Gremory. But now, Jin was pushing her to her limits, and she couldn't help but feel a mix of excitement and frustration.
'I can't believe he's cornering me like this…' Sona thought, her eyes flickering over the board as she tried to devise a strategy. If she didn't come up with a brilliant move soon, she would undoubtedly lose the game. And losing was not an option—not with the stakes she had set.
Out of the corner of her eye, she noticed Tsubaki's concerned gaze, but she reassured her vice-president with a quick smile before returning her focus to Jin.
"What could possibly make you interested in someone as boring as me, Kaichou?" Jin asked casually as he moved his knight, further cornering Sona's king.
Sona's remaining pieces were dwindling—just her king, two bishops, and five pawns. Meanwhile, Jin still had his queen, one knight, two bishops, and two rooks. His pawns were all gone—sacrificed strategically to gain the upper hand.
If she didn't act fast, the game would be over in just a few more moves.
'This is… bad.' Sona clenched her fists under the table, her mind racing to find a way out of the situation. But despite her best efforts, every scenario she considered ended with her defeat.
"Isn't it natural for the student council to recruit the most popular guy in school?" Sona replied, forcing a smile. "If someone like you joined the council, it would boost our image and earn us more support from the students."
Her response was calculated—carefully worded to avoid revealing her true motives. Even Tsubaki nodded in agreement, as if to back up her president's claim.
"Fair enough," Jin replied with a nod. Without hesitation, he moved his queen next to Sona's king. "Checkmate, Kaichou. It looks like I've won."
"Wha—?!" Sona gasped, her eyes darting across the board as she desperately searched for a way out. But there was none. "…It's true…"
Defeated, she slumped slightly in her chair, unable to hide her shock.
Ignoring her reaction, Jin calmly took a sip of his tea, only to frown slightly.
"…It's lukewarm."
"How… How did you win?" Sona asked, still in disbelief.
"Does it really matter?" Jin replied with a shrug. "The important thing is that I won. And that means… you'll grant me one wish, right?"
Sona gritted her teeth in frustration, but she couldn't deny it. She had proposed the bet herself—and she had lost fair and square. As the heiress of the Sitri family, she couldn't go back on her word. Doing so would dishonor her family's name.
Granting Jin's wish wasn't the problem—it was her pride that stung the most. Ever since she had made a certain promise to her parents and the devil society, she had never imagined she would face a situation like this.
'I never expected this…' Sona bit her lower lip, trying to suppress her frustration.
Finally, she took a deep breath, straightened her posture, and met Jin's gaze with a resolute expression.
"Fine. A loss is still a loss. Tell me your wish."
"Perfect!" Jin exclaimed with a grin, snapping his fingers as if sealing the deal. "Then, I want you to…"
As Jin whispered his wish, Sona's eyes widened in shock, her breath catching in her throat.
