Chapter 69: Chapter 69: Before the Banquet
Chapter 69: Before the Banquet
Kakashi wasn't quite sure what Mei Terumi was thinking when she said those words to him.
He scanned her up and down as if looking at a stranger, but he still couldn't reach a conclusion.
"Will you fight me?"
"I will."
Mei answered the silver-haired young man without a shred of hesitation. Ordinarily, asking her to fight Kakashi would be more painful than suicide, but this time, the situation was different.
"Let's not make the topic so heavy," Kakashi said, not wanting to dwell on the issue. What he had anticipated as a potentially tense romantic confrontation had now escalated into a more serious matter of life and death.
He didn't doubt Mei's resolve. The fact that she had entered without her Mizukage hat showed she was making a bet—it was a hint.
'I can give up being the Mizukage. Either you take me away, or you stay here.'
That was likely what she meant. The woman's intellect was truly off the charts when dealing with him; at least, Kakashi had never seen her plot against anyone before.
Now, even the Queen of Rōran, whom Mei had disparaged as a 'lover', was looking at him with hopeful eyes. It was hard to comprehend.
"Ahem."
Pretending to cough twice, Kakashi couldn't stand the atmosphere any longer.
"The air in the basement isn't great. I'm going out for a bit."
"Going out? To breathe in the sand?"
"..."
Her words didn't change his course of action. The young man pushed the door open and stepped out. Since arriving here, he had been bombarded with so much information that he hadn't had time to digest it before being dragged into one emotional entanglement after another, filling him with a sense of frustration.
He had to admit, women were truly formidable, especially in their ability to accurately predict his next move through experience.
Without activating the second stage of his physical conditioning and his Lightning Release, Kakashi could no longer outpace Mei. The Mizukage stuck to him like glue, her actions flawless.
After three failed attempts to escape using the Clone and Substitution Jutsu, the young man gave up trying to avoid her.
"Done running?"
"Running? This isn't called running."
"If you stay, I can turn a blind eye to your business with Sara. I can even give you the position of Mizukage. Your master is the Fourth Hokage, Minato Namikaze. If you join forces with him, we can defeat the other three great nations and bring a period of peace to the shinobi world. And if you're still not satisfied..."
"Done playing the emotional card, now you're playing the interest card?"
"You always like to lecture me with grand principles. Today, I'll lecture you."
"Let me ask you, if I stay here, what happens to you?"
"That would naturally be... are you referring to the past me?"
"Yes."
Kakashi revealed his purple chakra.
"You must have seen it already. If this world is truly the future, then I shouldn't have fused with the Ryūmyaku. I should have arrived here as an ordinary ninja."
"Are you trying to say you're not Kakashi? That the Kakashi I love isn't you? Someone else might believe that, but do you think I will?"
He didn't have a chance to explain the word "yandere" to Mei, but Kakashi felt that her future self was certainly heading in that direction.
"There's a banquet tonight. It's for Rōran to celebrate the supplies I brought. Only today can they afford such a limited luxury."
"Are you inviting me?"
"Mhm. So, will you be attending as the Mizukage's husband, or as the Prince of Rōran?"
"Just a moment ago you said you'd turn a blind eye to my affairs with Sara. Changing your mind so quickly?"
"Then you can attend as the Prince of Rōran."
His utterly reckless words made Mei's eyes narrow dangerously.
"Kakashi, you have one more chance."
"Can I use both identities at the same time?"
That shameless attitude was all too familiar.
It was just like this that she had slowly come to accept Sara's existence.
"Scum."
"Heh."
Kakashi didn't deny it. Heaven was his witness; he hadn't done a single thing out of line. This was all the future's mess, and now he was being threatened and mocked for giving his honest, optimal answer.
Even though she knew this detestable, silver-haired man was mostly being manipulative and trying to provoke her, Mei still fell for it. She grabbed Kakashi's hand and turned, walking towards the dressing room.
"Picking out clothes?"
The dressing room displayed many styles of formal attire. These were made for Mei by the best tailor among all the city's survivors, a token of gratitude for the supplies she had brought to Rōran.
It was no easy feat to create such exquisite clothes with the scarce resources of this underground city. Each of these gowns was tailored to fit her figure perfectly. The only other person here who enjoyed the same treatment was the Queen of Rōran, Sara.
Mei chose which one to wear to the banquet herself. She picked up a sky-blue gown and held it against her body.
"Is this one okay?"
"Change the color."
His finger traced over the remaining gowns, finally settling on a deep blue one.
"You have some kind of obsession with blue, don't you?"
The deep blue did indeed create a more elegant and refined aura than the sky blue, making the already mature and coolly beautiful Mei exude a sexy, hormonal charm.
"Want to watch me change?"
Mei's little devil tail was practically wagging. Kakashi remained calm and composed. This was still a phase of their game. From threats to emotional appeals, to appeals of grand purpose, and now to the allure of a beautiful woman—each was a fatal temptation for any man.
Slowly, the Mizukage slipped out of her shoulder-baring battle dress, completely unconcerned by the situation.
Once she was fully dressed, the now completely transformed sexy woman pulled Kakashi over. She found a suit for him as well and personally helped him put it on.
Sara came in at the wrong time. She was also here to change her clothes. As the queen, she could enter any room at will and wasn't in the habit of knocking.
"Pardon the intrusion."
Just as she was about to close the door, Kakashi stopped her. Under Mei's fiery gaze, he chose a pure white gown for Sara, creating a stark contrast with her hair color.
"My lord... are you attending the banquet?"
"Mhm."
He gestured towards the nearly-exploding Mei.
"Appearing as both the Prince of Rōran and the Mizukage's husband at the same time will surely displease you."
"There will certainly be some displeasure."
Sara smiled.
"But to be able to attend the banquet with you before you leave, I'll be content."
With a simple move of yielding to advance, she shattered one of the fronts Mei had previously tried to build by winning her over. Kakashi sensed a few "rats" sneaking into the main hall.
"After the banquet begins, you two must stay by my side."
'It's time to help this country get rid of some traitors.'
