Harry Potter: The Dark ages

Chapter 40: Chapter 40 Lockhart’s Secret Plan

"That was before…" Lupin couldn't refute James. He had indeed heard Snape make disparaging remarks about Muggle-borns in a deserted classroom on the third-floor corridor that time. He also knew about Sirius's family situation and naturally understood the mindset of those Pure-blood ideologues.

However, after half a semester of getting along, he also realized that Snape wasn't as detestable as James made him out to be.

"Forget it, James…" Lupin didn't want to argue anymore. He had just finished reforming the Defense Against the Dark Arts curriculum, and the day after tomorrow he still had to go to the Shrieking Shack… The full moon was approaching again. "I'll keep my distance from Snape…"

"No, you have to quit that organization!" Sirius didn't want him to sleep.

"The four of us are roommates in the same dormitory. Why are you running off to Ravenclaw's side?" he said. "Right, Peter?"

Peter squirmed twice, grunted a couple of times, and pretended to be asleep.

"It's not all Ravenclaw, there's also Lily…" Lupin said with his eyes closed. It wasn't the first time he felt James and Sirius were childish. In fact, their behavior was quite age-appropriate; it was just that Lupin himself was somewhat precocious due to his physical condition.

"You can't use Lily to make your point this time," James said, a bit sulkily. "Remus… Do you still consider us friends?"

"Of course, James, we are friends…" Lupin deliberately slowed his breathing, feigning sleep, trying to end the topic.

Then his pajama collar was grabbed. "Remus, you have to give us an explanation today!" Sirius shook his hand.

"You didn't even come to our two Quidditch debut matches, and instead ran off to play with Ravenclaw, that's just not right!" James's messy hair swayed back and forth.

Lupin was speechless. The two days James and Sirius had their matches happened to coincide with the full moon. He was resting in the Shrieking Shack. He had told James that his mother was sick and he needed to go home to take care of her. How did it become "ran off to play with Ravenclaw" in their mouths now?

And how did he become someone who just went off to play with others? Lupin felt that what "A Maverick Pig" was doing was very meaningful and valuable.

He couldn't speak harshly to James and Sirius. Due to his physical condition since childhood, he didn't have many friends. James and the other two were the first good friends he made upon entering school, and he cherished their friendship very much, even though they didn't know about his Werewolf identity yet…

"How about this, I'll try to spend more time with you all in the future, and go there less, okay?" Lupin raised his hands in surrender. "But I can't quit now, there are still many places where I'm needed."

"…" James and Sirius exchanged glances. "Alright, Remus, you have to remember, we are your true friends." Sirius laughed, putting his arm around Lupin's shoulder. Lupin smiled helplessly.

The unwilling Lockhart quickly found a good opportunity to make a name for himself.

One day, while cleaning the Ravenclaw common room, he accidentally overheard several older students discussing the haunting of the Shrieking Shack, which piqued his interest.

He became even more pleased when he heard that the Wizards in Hogsmeade had been terrified by the ghostly screams. He had already imagined how he would show off in Hogwarts and Hogsmeade after catching the ghost.

"Fantastic, absolutely…" He could hear the villagers of Hogsmeade praising him even in his dreams.

"I think everyone knows Hogwarts very well… In the eyes of us Hogwarts students, there's no ghost that can't be dealt with…" Lockhart chuckled in his dream.

His dream was stuck at the moment Headmaster Dumbledore awarded him a medal.

Then he was shaken awake. "Lockhart? Lockhart? Wake up!" It was the voice of his only friend, Miss Bones from Hufflepuff…

No!

He was still in Transfiguration class! Lockhart immediately sobered up. Just as he raised his head, he saw Professor McGonagall standing at the desk, looking at him sternly.

"It seems Professor Flitwick's punishment hasn't served as a sufficient warning for you, Mr. Lockhart," Professor McGonagall said. "One week of detention. I hope it helps you concentrate in my class."

After class, Lockhart returned to his dormitory in a daze. His roommates hadn't returned. He lay on his back on the bed, recalling his earlier dream.

He was determined to find the ghost in the Shrieking Shack and make everyone look at him with new eyes.

Lockhart didn't believe there was a ghost in the Shrieking Shack. If it was like the ghosts in Hogwarts, it would actually be a good thing, as these ghosts couldn't cause any harm to Wizards.

It was probably some kind of Dark Arts creature, Lockhart thought… He still had some of the pocket money his mother gave him. He could use the Easter holiday to go to Diagon Alley to buy some protective gear.

Also, how would he get into Hogsmeade?

He wasn't an older student, hadn't been to Hogsmeade, didn't even know where the Shrieking Shack was, and there was also the secret passage from Hogwarts to Hogsmeade…

He had heard older students say that four second-year Gryffindor students were very good at discovering Hogwarts' secret passages. They knew more than the caretaker, Mr. Pringle.

As long as he could get into Hogsmeade, he would share some of the credit with those four… Lockhart's plan was beautiful, and he intended to start implementing it that afternoon.

"A secret passage to Hogsmeade?" James said indistinctly, eating a chicken leg, looking at Lockhart sitting in front of him with a puzzled expression. "Why are you asking that?"

"I also want to go on an adventure," Lockhart naturally couldn't reveal his true purpose. "I'm also very interested in Hogsmeade, but I'm not old enough…"

"You like adventures too?" James's eyes lit up.

Lockhart knew his answer had pleased James. "That's right, I also want to try the butterbeer at The Three Broomsticks… That's why I came to Mr. Potter. Everyone says Mr. Potter is the person who knows Hogwarts best, so I assume he also knows how to get from Hogwarts to Hogsmeade."

Lockhart flattered him.

This hit James's sweet spot. He loved to hear others praise him. Hearing this, he said somewhat smugly, "Ahem, of course, there are three secret passages from Hogwarts to Hogsmeade, they are…"

The show-off James, in one breath, told Lockhart all the secret passages to Hogsmeade he knew. This was the result of his late-night explorations over the past year and a half.

"Thank you so much, James!" This time, Lockhart said it sincerely. James had really helped him a great deal.

After bidding farewell to James, the excited Lockhart began to formulate his detailed plan. He took advantage of his free time during the day to investigate the three secret passages James had mentioned, and only relaxed after confirming that they led to Hogsmeade.
