Chapter 39: Chapter 39 A Difficult Choice
He was born into a Half-blood family; only he and his mother were Wizards, while his father and two elder sisters were Muggles. This led his mother to have excessive expectations of him, instilling in him the belief that Gilderoy Lockhart was special.
He himself firmly believed this. From a young age, he could feel magic flowing through the walls on both sides, countless magical energies surrounding him, whispering softly.
This made him deeply convinced that he was the protagonist of a Muggle novel, capable of changing the world.
In reality, he was merely being overly sentimental. Every young Wizard with slightly stronger magic could feel the omnipresent magic in the world for a period after their magical outburst.
Gary even felt the magic surge like ocean tides during his first magical outburst.
Sneaking into the Restricted Section and tearing up a unique book was a major blow to him, but a re-energized Lockhart vowed to change the way Hogwarts students saw him, determined not to be looked down upon any longer.
He planned to do something big.
…
In early February, the "A Maverick Pig" team finally completed the detailed reforms for the Defense Against the Dark Arts curriculum. It included many examples, and they had mostly supplemented the lecture notes for the first to fourth years. Content for higher years was too difficult for them.
The seven of them solemnly signed their names on the last page of the parchment. Everyone was excited; even Snape, who usually had a pale complexion, was flushed with a hint of excitement.
"That's great, everyone!" Alfrina stood up and applauded. They were currently sitting in a circle on the hillside by the Black Lake. "We've achieved our goal for this school year. Thank you all for your hard work…"
"We are also deeply honored to be part of such an activity," Lily's fiery red hair fluttered in the wind.
Aside from Alfrina and Gary, the remaining five were participating in this type of activity for the first time. The thought that their efforts contributed to the future reform of the Defense Against the Dark Arts curriculum filled their hearts with excitement.
"We will decide on the research topic for the next school year at the end of this year," Alfrina said. "If anyone has good ideas, please bring them up, and we can discuss them together."
She looked around. "When it's time for final exam review, Lily and I will organize and compile key points for exam preparation. Everyone has strengths in specific subjects, so we can brainstorm and complement each other."
The paper on the Defense Against the Dark Arts curriculum reform immediately drew strong attention after being submitted to Dumbledore. Dumbledore sent the article directly to Ms. Jenkins, the then Minister for Magic.
Ms. Jenkins took this matter very seriously. The Pure-blood riots during the Squib rights protest in the late 60s made her very wary of the relationships between different social strata in the British Magical World.
Now, a faint shadow had begun to cover the Magical World. A powerful Wizard named Lord Voldemort had started to rally Pure-bloods to reclaim control of the Ministry of Magic. Society was becoming unstable, which put Ms. Jenkins in a very awkward political position.
She desperately needed a topic to divert public suspicion about her governing ability, and she set her sights on Hogwarts's Defense Against the Dark Arts curriculum reform.
The previous Minister for Magic had not resolved the curse of the Defense Against the Dark Arts Professor changing every year, and Jenkins did not intend to do so either. She knew her capabilities were limited, and starting with the curriculum outline and lecture notes was an excellent idea.
She immediately organized a meeting with a group of Wizengamot Wizards, then recalled many retired Ministry of Magic staff to form a temporary team and began working on the curriculum reform. The retired staff were older and retained some memories of the systematic Defense Against the Dark Arts teaching from long ago. Their own ideas, combined with the reform suggestions provided by "A Maverick Pig," merged to form a more comprehensive curriculum outline.
Professor Dumbledore shared the news with the team members, and the Ministry of Magic's emphasis further boosted their enthusiasm.
Lupin, usually calm, was also very excited. As only a second-year, he could already make a significant contribution to Hogwarts with his companions. If he continued working with "A Maverick Pig," he might even be able to apply to stay and teach at Hogwarts after graduation, which would be a great fortune given his identity.
"I say, Remus, you don't have to be so excited, do you?" In the dormitory room, James lay on his bed with his hands behind his head, crossing his legs, watching Lupin pace excitedly around the room.
"Looks like Remus is having a great time with Shafik," Sirius said sarcastically.
Peter, sitting on the edge of his bed, cautiously glanced at the three of them, not joining the conversation. Having spent a considerable amount of time with them, he knew he had no place in this discussion.
"There's no 'following' anyone here, Sirius," Lupin calmed his excited feelings and retorted to Sirius.
Sirius scoffed and said nothing more.
"Gary and the others are indeed people with great vision and execution," Lupin sat down. "Severus's talent in Potions is also quite good…"
"Severus?" James reacted strongly. "Are you two on such good terms now?"
Sirius also looked incredulous.
Both of them were now members of the Gryffindor Quidditch team, and their weekly training was very intense. Since Lupin joined "A Maverick Pig," they hadn't sat down for a proper chat in a long time.
"I admit Severus's personality is a bit awkward, but he's not impossible to get along with," Lupin said, shrugging.
"You can't be friends with Snivellus, Remus!" James jumped up. "Anyone but Snivellus!"
"James…" Lupin frowned. He felt that James and Sirius had too much prejudice against Snape.
"Exactly, Remus," Sirius stared at him with sharp eyes. "I don't mind you being friends with Shafik; he's just a bit soft-natured at most. But Snivellus is different; he has a character problem."
"…You barely have any contact with him, how can you assert that his character is problematic?" Lupin felt his two good friends were being somewhat inexplicable.
Peter lay on his bed, turning over to look out the window. He knew this evening's matter wouldn't end well, and he didn't intend to intervene.
"Enough!" James jumped three feet high, pointing at Lupin. "Have you forgotten Snape's comments about Muggle-borns that we overheard in the corridor? He's a blatant Pure-blood supremacist! Sirius, you tell him about your family."
Sirius raised an eyebrow, staring at Lupin without blinking.
