Harry Potter: The Dark ages

Chapter 30: Chapter 30: Annecy

Gary hadn't seen his father in a year, and the more he looked, the more Mr. Shafiq resembled an older Sirius Black.

"That's right! It's a good thing little Gary's condition improved, otherwise Dad would still be in Africa monitoring those Dark Wizards."

Mr. Shafiq picked Gary up, laughing heartily and kissing him on the cheek.

Mrs. Shafiq's beautiful face held a smile as she went to the kitchen, poured three cups of water, and then led her husband and child to sit on the sofa.

"Gary, quickly tell us, how did your illness get better?" Mr. Shafiq's face showed a hint of curiosity.

He placed Gary, who was in his arms, onto the sofa, and then he began to weave the story he had prepared long ago.

He attributed everything to Hogwarts Castle, stating that the Castle had a very powerful magnetic field that could interfere with all electronic devices and communication facilities.

This magnetic field truly existed, its purpose being to protect Hogwarts from discovery. Gary added a new function to this magnetic field: stabilizing magic.

This fabricated function was not baseless. From Howard, he learned that an important selling point when Hogwarts recruited Muggle-born Wizards was that "Wizards' magic is extremely unstable during their underage years, and if they don't go to Hogwarts to learn magic, severe consequences such as magic riots will occur."

Gary was an extreme manifestation of the magic riot syndrome. For example, a normal young Wizard's magic threshold is 10-30. When magic is below or exceeds this energy value, the body will produce a stress response, falling into a coma or experiencing a magic riot to replenish or release magic.

Gary's magic threshold, however, was roughly 5-50. When his magic was too low, his body would generate a large amount of new magic, and this amount far exceeded the limit of 50, causing his body to form another magic riot, and his magic would again deplete, repeating in a cycle.

In other words, Gary's body's regulation mechanism was problematic. Fortunately, he now had that vine wood wand. Whenever his magic was about to riot, he would grip the wand and pour magic into it, which helped control his condition.

Gary wasn't sure how Hogwarts controlled young Wizards' magic. Since Hogwarts claimed they could help young Wizards control their magic, Gary also claimed it could. Regardless of whether it truly could or not, it now possessed this function.

"..." Mr. Shafiq gasped, turning to ask his wife, "Hogwarts Castle has this effect too?"

Mrs. Shafiq's lips were slightly parted, her face full of surprise. She shook her head, indicating she also didn't know.

Gary thought to himself, 'You are all from Pure-blood families. Who would pay attention to such news unless they specifically looked into it?'

"Alright, dear, let's not think about these things for now. Gary just came back from school. Let him have a good meal and a good sleep. Tomorrow, we're going to France with Euphemia's family."

Mrs. Shafiq ended the topic first.

Euphemia was Mrs. Potter's name.

She didn't care how Gary's illness got better; as long as the result was what she desired, she didn't care about the process, just as she had exhausted their family's wealth to treat Gary's illness before. She didn't care how much hardship or exhaustion the process involved, as long as her child's illness could be cured, she was very happy.

The family spent half an hour in the kitchen, finally bringing the steaming hot dinner to the table.

"Oh, by the way, Gary," half-way through dinner, Mrs. Shafiq suddenly remembered something, "Do you remember where you put the Gringotts key? Your father and I redeemed the antiques we sold earlier, and now we've saved some money, but we forgot where we put the key."

Gary remembered that the key was still in the hidden compartment of his suitcase. He had also deposited a good amount of money into the family's vault before. Fortunately, the amount wasn't large, so he could still explain it.

"The key is in my suitcase. Perhaps you accidentally left it in there before," Gary said. "I sold all the extra magic stabilizers and deposited the money into the vault."

Fortunately, he hadn't deposited all his money into Gringotts. The money he sold to Pomfrey was still in his hands.

...

Early the next morning, Gary was woken up by Mrs. Shafiq.

"Get up quickly. You can sleep in the car later." Her gentle voice, however, was like a lullaby, making Gary drowsy.

Gary opened his eyes halfway and then closed them again.

"Hurry up!" She patted Gary hard through the blanket.

The pain successfully drove away his sleepiness. Gary rubbed his eyes and crawled out of bed. It was still pitch black outside, and Gary could see the nearly full moon hanging high in the sky through the window.

Ten minutes later, the Shafiq family sat at the dining table on the first floor, eating breakfast. Mrs. Shafiq had only prepared some bread and milk today, a simple meal.

The drowsy Mr. Shafiq and the ecstatic Mrs. Shafiq quickly finished their breakfast, grabbed their luggage, and headed out the door.

They still gathered at James's house. Mr. Potter spent a large amount of Galleons to apply to the Ministry of Magic for an international Portkey that could directly reach the Alps in southern France.

"Hold on tight, everyone!" This time, the Portkey was a tattered leather glove. Six people stood in a circle, and Gary barely managed to grab a corner of the glove.

The leather glove glowed blue, and Gary felt a hook grab his belly button and pull him sharply upward. The surrounding scenery began to change rapidly.

Gary's eyes could no longer capture their full appearance.

He could only see James beside him, still maintaining the same distance.

Now they were flying. A strong sense of weightlessness enveloped Gary. The cold wind of the winter morning, carrying damp moisture, struck Gary's face.

After an unknown amount of time, they finally landed. Gary's legs felt weak as he stepped onto the ground, feeling extremely unreal. He looked down and saw it was a snowy landscape.

"Six thirty-two, from Godric's Hollow, Britain. Welcome to Annecy, France."

A lazy, heavily accented English voice sounded beside Gary's ear.

Startled, he turned his head and saw that amidst the snowy landscape, a shining light still pierced through the morning mist and reflected in his eyes.

It was a bald uncle. He yawned and scribbled on a piece of parchment with a nearly featherless quill.

"Hurry up and leave, the next group of tourists is arriving."

The uncle waved lazily.

The six people quickly packed their belongings and left. Just over ten meters away, they heard the sound of a heavy object landing behind them.

"Six thirty-four, from the American Magical Congress. Welcome to Annecy."

A group of Wizards and Witches of different complexions, dressed in robes, one by one, climbed up from the ground.

"Gary, get in the car!" Mrs. Shafiq called to him. To his surprise, there was a Muggle pickup truck parked by the roadside.

The four adults sat inside the car, while James and Gary sat in the back with the luggage. The back of the truck had been enchanted with a warming charm, so it didn't feel cold even in the icy snow.

Mr. Potter started the car, and the group of six set off towards the majestic Alps in the distance.
