Chapter 64: Minerva talks with Dumbledore
While Harry and Hermione were having their intimate moments in the room of requirements, Minerva had arrived in Dumbledore's office.
"Take a seat, Minerva," Dumbledore said. His facial expression was only of one thing- disappointment. He did not have his usual smile on his face and he clearly did not look pleased.
Minerva nodded and sat down. She was wearing a black leather glove in her right hand to cover the marks of her curse. It would take at least few days before the effect of the curse would completely vanish.
"Minerva," said Dumbledore breaking the tense silence. "I had not expected this from you. You have disappointed me."
Minerva did not reply anything.
He continued, "I acknowledge that you are powerful enough to bear the backlash of the curse for a small breach but I do not appreciate it."
"May I know what compelled you to breach the magical contract?" He questioned.
Minerva sighed deeply and her expression was unreadable.
"Miss. Granger," said Minerva. "She knows about the assault Miss. Greengrass have been going through."
Dumbledore narrowed his eyes, "How?"
"She saw Miss. Greengrass on Hogwarts express," Minerva replied with the same unreadable expression.
"I see," Dumbledore contemplated. And his mind flashed at the presence of Daphne Greengrass in the compartment. He had initially paid not much attention to it. Dumbledore had even taken Harry's approach to Daphne as nothing more than child's whim. He had assumed that the Greengrass and Harry might have had some talk in the compartment and maybe this play of friendship would continue for few days.
But now this information changed a lot of things. Harry was not a sort of person to look away if such a thing was happening and Hermione Granger was a bit too stubborn headed in these kinds of matter to look away.
"What did you say to Miss. Granger?" Dumbledore asked.
"Not a lot of things but told her a few truths," Minerva sighed with regret. "Not the specific condition of Miss. Greengrass but general things about it."
"I doubt that my answers satisfied her," she added. "Or any answer for that matter would have satisfied her about our inaction."
Dumbledore contemplated, "This should not have happened."
He was not talking about the assault but about Hermione learning of these things.
"I do not want Hogwarts to get involved in politics," Dumbledore said 'righteously'.
Minerva's anger 'flared' a bit at this but, outwards, she showed no visible reaction.
"Albus," Minerva said. "Can't we do something about this?"
"I cannot bear such disgusting things happening under the authority of Hogwarts."
Dumbledore shook his head, "No, Minerva."
"For the greater good, we need to bear some evil," he added. "I will not allow for politics to play any role in Hogwarts."
"But isn't allowing such a thing to happen on Hogwarts because of political considerations getting Hogwarts involved in politics?" She almost snapped. "If we do not want to politics to play a part into Hogwarts, why are we allowing repercussions of politics to echo in our school?"
"And this is not even politics… this is pure assault, just a little bit short of sexual assault and that is not because that those fellows have a bottom line but because of special considerations," Minerva almost shouted.
But Dumbledore was stubborn. He shook his head.
"No, Minerva," he said. "My decision on this is final."
"And no more arguments on this," he added leaving Minerva with no words to say.
"And I would like if no other breach of the magical contract occurs," he added.
Minerva nodded slowly.
"I have another issue to discuss," she said.
"Yes?" Dumbledore asked.
"Mr. Potter," Minerva said. "He does not wish to attend Divination classes anymore."
"And what class does he want to go?" Dumbledore asked with an amused face.
"Study of Ancient Runes," Minerva said and possibly a small smile appeared on her face.
Meanwhile, the amusement on Dumbledore's face and his smile faded.
"Tell him that changing subjects is not possible," Dumbledore replied.
"I did inform Mr. Potter of this," Minerva replied. "But he was having none of it."
"He said that he was not asking permission for the change but he was merely informing me," she continued. "He also had a genuine copy of Hogwarts: Rules, Regulation & Governance and cited rules from it."
Dumbledore's face fell as Minerva's amusement increased.
She continued, "I tried to persuade him but he said why would he want to attend a class where the professor would kill him few times every week."
"And yes, he also got in agreement with professor Babbling to set a test of the previous two years for him."
"I did not agree to it," she said. "And told him that I will inform headmaster Dumbledore of it but he said that he does not care and anyhow he would not be going into class of Divination but that of study of ancient runes."
"I see," said Dumbledore. "I would like to meet him after the dinner."
"Very well," said Minerva as he took her leave from the classroom.
As soon as Minerva left, Dumbledore's neutral expression was replaced by that of rage.
'Why is that in past few days everything is happening entirely opposite to what I would want?' He mused internally.
'I need to set things back in course and take things back in control,' he thought and his face firmed.
'And this Snape…' he thought angrily. 'I had warned him that whatever happens in his house should remain in his house but that idiot…'
'I need to fix this matter too somehow otherwise that Granger will dive deep into it.'
