Chapter 59: The Curse?
Minerva's statement followed few moments of tense silence as Hermione absorbed the words she had heard. Breaking a rule?
She could whip her head around the fact that why an explanation about why Hogwarts cannot prevent or act when a student was being sexually assaulted would be breaking some rules?
Even so she did not speak anything or asked any questions. She waited for Minerva to offer an explanation.
And though as she had said there was nothing which was going to justify an assault on a student, she at least decided the 'reasons' for it.
"Miss. Granger," said Hermione. Her face was expressionless.
"As I said the world is neither fair nor a paradise," she continued. "In our world, as probably in the muggle world, politics and power plays an important role. Discrimination, bullying, assault and racism are things which are common in almost every society."
"You have first hand experience of one such thing- Draco Malfoy calling you a mud blood, of dirty blood is one such thing."
"He is a pure blood after all… the highest of status in the wizarding world," she continued. "I too am a pure blood… Harry is half blood and you are…"
Minerva did not complete the sentence but her meaning was far too clear.
"But even among the pure bloods, not everyone is equal," she scoffed. "Some have an exalted status while some have an inferior status."
"And this difference among the pure bloods have not been created by some purity in blood but by various other factors… like wealth their family possess, their family magic, the seat they hold in Wizengamot," Minerva said. And Hermione's ears perked at the mention of Wizengamot as this was second time, she was hearing such a thing. Her mind also registered the new word 'family magic.'
"And while this is true most of time, the blood status has an exception to it," she added. "There is a certain half blood who can press his heel on the neck of most of the pure bloods without batting an eye."
"And now, about Miss. Greengrass," said Minerva. "I am not at the liberty to say what exactly but she has certain problems… more exactly her family has certain problems."
"And I would say they proved too be quite unlucky as well," Minerva said with visible pain in her voice.
"And few people with the support of a certain powerful individual uses to this their benefit," Minerva said.
"And?" Hermione asked with a frustrated expression.
Minerva was about to reply but Hermione continued, "In a nutshell, since Daphne Greengrass' family is involved into certain political problem, which I have no interest in knowing, Hogwarts decided to turn a blind eye to a crime which is happening in its premise."
Minerva's words struck in her throat and she could not argue. Hermione was correct.
"Hermione," Minerva said softly. "Hogwarts has a policy of not to interfere in political matters."
Hermione stood up and struck both her palms on the table with a bang. Her face had contorted into rage and Minerva was taken aback by the sheer ferocity on Hermione's face.
"Decided not to intervene in political matters?" She shouted and her voice echoed in the empty classroom.
"This is not a political problem," she was furious. "This is a problem of a crime committed in Hogwarts's premise."
"You know what, Hogwarts is actually interfering in the politics," she continued. "By taking into consideration the politics and not acting against a crime being committed against one of its students."
Minerva turned silent and no words left her mouth.
She turned and stormed to leave but stopped abruptly just before the door, "I wonder, if I had not been Harry's friend… the boy who lived."
"Draco Malfoy would have brought the same 'political' problem to my doors," she spat in disgust.
"And I am actually terrified by the fact that there could have been endless atrocities being committed inside these walls," she continued. "And you all would have turned a blind eye to it… because it would be a political problem."
With her last words, Hermione stormed out of the classroom.
As soon as Hermione left the classroom, Minerva McGonagall slumped into her chair. Tears were streaming down her eyes.
The next moment, she felt the strength leaving her body and her right palm which had been placed on the table started to turn black.
Minerva's eyes hardened at this, "I am not that weak to be affected by this mere curse."
With her words, she pushed a vast amount of magic towards her right hand. A struggle ensued between the blackening curse and her magic but ultimately her magic succeeded and the blackening stopped at her palm.
She let out a deep sigh as her shoulders slumped and her face fell. Although she had declared that she was not that weak, she knew it was only because the curse was at very minor level.
If she continued breaking those rules, she would likely suffer more.
